Something to keep in mind
« on: April 10, 2020, 04:02:33 am »

This is a unique time in many ways and one symptom of that might be horses that are dropping in claiming price as owners look to trim their stock because (choose one) their businesses are suffering and they no longer have the cash to sustain an expensive hobby such as racing (think restaurateurs and almost anyone in retail) -- or -- they can't be certain when/where they'll be able to race their horses in the months ahead and want to reduce now so as not to have extra mouths to feed that aren't bringing in revenue.

Many owners will just tell a trainer to drop the horse to where he will win, don't worry if anybody claims him (all the better if somebody does) and if they don't, just run him right back at that level until somebody does.

I don't have any examples to put forth, but this makes sense as people are in need of cash now.

So, when you're looking at a horse taking a drastic plunge in claiming price, it might not be the horse that's hurting, but the owner.

This action, running a horse below its class, would also have the effect of "purging" the claiming ranks of those horses at the lowest levels.
