Softball - something to keep an eye on
« on: March 04, 2020, 09:51:51 am »

The long-time coach at Cal, Diane Ninemire, has stepped down from her position citing health concerns.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/collegesports/article/Cal-softball-coach-Diane-Ninemire-steps-down-15102969.php

An obvious candidate for the position is our own Coach Deifel, who is a Cal alum and obviously successful at turning programs around. A lot of Coach Deifel's family still lives out in California, as well.

Cal probably does not have the overall resources that we have -- Coach Deifel would likely have to take a pay cut, our stadium/facilities are better (though Cal is supposedly building a new stadium) -- they are promoting the associate HC to be interim, but it'll be interesting to see what they do afterwards.

She would have to make twice as much at Cal to live in San Francisco and live the same quality of life she lives in NWA.   So if she moved to Cal she would be taking a 50% cut in buying power especially in home prices and taxes.

I do not see her leaving on her own accord.

I hope you are right, and she has certainly sounded in interviews like she and her family are very happy in NWA. But the pull of family and the alma mater can be tough ... We'll see. I hope she stays, for sure!

I donít think ANYONE would leave NWA for San Francisco, California.  To many problems with the homeless and stepping over human feces to get around.

Iím not worried about her leaving here for San Francisco.

"Home" has an allure and a reward all of its own.  Just ask Mike Neighbors.

No I have never been to Berkley.  If it is like other people have told me. I would probably have no business.  A ďLiberal ParadiseĒ from what I hear.

Happily, @Coach1 and @cypressrock sure seem to know what they were talking about. The folks (folk?) at the Rounding3rd twitter account reportedly have information that the three finalists for the Cal job do not include Coach Deifel.

https://twitter.com/Rounding3rdSB/status/1254639956556951557

The finalists are: Texas Assistant Chelsea Spencer (like Deifel, a Cal alumna), TTU Associate HC Sam Marder, and SDSU Associate Head Coach (and 3x Olympian) Stacey Nuveman Deniz. Marder and Nuveman played their college ball at Ohio State and UCLA, respectively.

You have to believe that, had Deifel actually been interested, she'd easily have been a finalist among that crop of folks, none of whom actually has any HC experience. This is really, really good news, imo.

Chelsea Spencer officially announced as the new Cal coach. I hope we keep Coach Deifel for a very long time.

Many more people are moving From the San Francisco area than moving To that area.    I admit it looks beautiful and has great weather but they have a lot of social and tax problems out there.   Plus sometime in the future there will be another very bit earth quake. Who knows when.

I think that if SF does not get bailed out soon they will go bankrupt.
