RD just tweeted that Caldwell is not being retained...
It was in the paper this morning too.

QC Asst. Patrick Doherty from GA rumored to be hired by Pitt. According to the Scoop.

We haven’t had a decent defense in years. With the one year exception of 2015. 3 to 4 DCs have failed in recent years. Our defense hasn’t tackled well, played the ball while in the air nor taken the  appropriate angles on runners. So something strange is happening regardless of who the DC is.
Part of the problem has been the priorities of offensive minded head coaches that are better offensive recruiters and teachers. Coach them up and they will play defense.

I understand why its taking so long.  where were 4-20  last two years maybe the don't see the talent here like  hogville does? Not asking to upgrade to OC/ DC  just change schools to coach the same position. biggest question to me maybe they think they can't recruit at Arkansas.

Exactly. If you practice and push defense in training camp in practice, it carries over, usually during the season. We have to make defense a priority again.

Well since he has coached at Tenn during the 90s when they were rolling and LSU and A$M, I imagine this was the least talented group he has worked with in while if ever, but he knew this coming to the job.  It wouldnt take rocket scientist to see that the Hogs were down in the talent category.   I believe the fact is Chief does NOT like to recruit and the other schools where he coached, the recruiting was pretty much done for him and all he had to do was coach.

Its too bad that it didnt work out with Chief.  I wanted him to succeed.  I felt he was the only coach on the staff who truly knew what it takes to win in the SEC and now he will leave with negative feelings about ARK.   But hey,  we were led to believe that the best D Coordinator in the country was coming to ARK, but that just turned into another Hammer Down, Left Lane, Full Tilt Boogie crapt that The Chad spewed when he got the job.

Here's to hoping Barry Odom gets it going defensively at ARK.
If the common conception that the team quit on CCM, then it would be pretty hard to think they would be playing well for the defense.   The old saying, Quitters never win, winners never quit.

It isn't taking that long. The focus last week was recruiting. This week it is working on the staff, meeting with current players, and current staff. Need to get a Strength coach in place for when the players return in Jan. I bet CSP has been working 12-14 hours days starting last Monday. Once OC is hired, can work on finishing up the offensive staff. Once signing day is over things will start happening with assistants moving around.

Cooper, Smith, Ingram, and Caldwell are no longer listed on the staff page. They were removed sometime on Tuesday. So Stepp will be the only coach retained. Glad to see a clean state with the defensive staff. Hope to get a new strength staff.

So I hear we are adding a JC head coach out of Kansas and an analyst from Mizzou, both to on field coaching positions.  Anybody know much on this?

He isn't just a JUCO head coach as some might think. The JUCO he is coming from is a very very good JUCO. Many very good players have gone through there over the years. He is going to bring some very good connections that is going to help in recruiting, I do believe. He's a pretty coach to boot.

So he is a JUCO head coach. And the other addition is was an analyst.   I'm questioning the hires because I thought we would get more experienced P5 or SEC coaches.  It seems we are getting numerous Mizzou coaches, a team that won on average 6 games per year during the past 4 years.  I realize 6 game at UA right now would be 3X the number of games we have won lately but I hope the coaches we are hiring are up to the challenge of the SEC.

I trust Odom on the CB hire. Worked with him for 4 years. He knows if he is ready or not. I suspect he will be a good recruiter. No idea how good of coach he is.

Finally!!  Has he signed a contract yet.  I hope this is a done deal.  I'm not sure how much I like his style but I do believe he is qualified.  So at OC/DC we have some experience.  Just for fun, will his system work in the SEC?

Could be, we will never really know.  Don't get me started on Briles time at Baylor.

OK. Choose very purposely to not get started. He is our OC now, let us hope that he can get the offense turned around.

If Briles was plan F why did he sign a contract last week. I believe he was CSPís top  pick since he interviewed last Monday.

Of course you are right. The impatient, negative bunch here didn't care about all that. Coach P wasn't moving on their timetable so, accordingly, he is screwing it up and on pick Q or something.

And Major Applewhite interviewed Tuesday and Wednesday. Then Pittman decided and the agents/lawyers started work on the contract. Though I have to believe that he (Briles) has not signed an official contract yet because technically he is still under one at FSU until the first, but there is some sort of binding agreement. That is logical assumption on my part without knowing the particulars. Doesn't matter. He is the new OC.

Carter has the CB's so either another coach or Odom will coach the safeties. He is more of a LB coach so I expect them to hire someone to coach the safeties.

Look for former Florida State assistant QB coach Mark Cala to join the Razorback staff in some capacity. Was assistant QB coach this past season and has been with Briles at his stops in Houston and Florida Atlantic.

Also, the running backs coach appears to be Georgia State's Jimmy Smith, started following several Razorback football accounts. Successful high school coach in the Atlanta area before taking the GSU job this past spring.

I like the Smith hire in terms of recruiting.  Granted he is new to college coaching but highly successful HS coach in Metro Atlanta. Iím sure SP is very familiar with him and those GA high school ties would help.  Even if we just pull a couple quality guys from the area each year thatís a huge win.

Like the diversity on staff with college guys, juco, and a HS coach.

It seems any time a coach comes up who is considered an up n comer without SEC experience or a NC ring some on HV act like itís a bad hire.

Basically every coach had to start somewhere.

No, that isn't totally the reason. We are being told no expense is being spared and the pocket book is open. If that is the case, we expect people hired who are proven to know what they are doing. He have had too many coaches hired recently that were getting on the job training as they went. You cannot compete in the SEC if you are having to teach coaches how to coach their position. We must move past that. We have to have proven coaches that can recruit to get out of this mess and we don't have years to see if unproven coaches can do it.

Nobody said we would open up the pocket books. Hunter was asked point blank how much for Asst. He said $5 million. We will be right around 5 mill. Went big on DC, OC, DL and OL coaches. Had to cut back in other so got cheaper coaches with great recruiting connections to Jucos, Ga (specifically Atl), and LA.

Still one more spot open.
