--- Quote ---After a couple quizzes against Incarnate Word and Northern, the Missouri basketball team leaves behind the comforts of home for its first major test at No. 21 Xavier. It’s just the kind of challenge Tigers coach Cuonzo Martin relishes this time of year.

“I think the best (teams) they strive in moments of adverse situation when you’re on the road,” Martin said Monday before getting on a flight to Cincinnati. “They want to be in those environments. I think they bring out the best in you. I enjoy playing on the road, just to have an opportunity to beat an opponent and silence the crowd.”

He’ll get that chance against the nationally ranked Musketeers in Tuesday’s 6 p.m. tipoff (CBS Sports Network) at the Cintas.

TV, radio • CBS Sports Network, KTRS (550 AM)

About Missouri • The Tigers are coming off Friday’s 71-56 win over Northern Kentucky. After going scoreless in the opener against Incarnate Word, junior guard Mark Smith paced MU with 19 points. … Junior center Jeremiah Tilmon leads the Tigers with 14.5 points and 6 rebounds per game. He posted his career scoring high against Xavier last year, 23 points with 10 rebounds. … Sophomore guard Xavier Pinson has thrived off the bench, averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 assists.

About Xavier • The Musketeers opened the season with wins over Jacksonville and Sienna. … Travis Steele returns four starters from last year’s 19-16 team that lost in the second round of the NIT. … Junior forward Naji Marshall (18.5 points per game, 5.5 assists) is a preseason first-team All-Big East selection, while junior forward Tyrique Jones (18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds) is among the best big men in the conference. … Junior guard Paul Scruggs sat out Friday’s game with a sore knee and is considered probable for Tuesday’s game.

--- Quote ---No. 22 Auburn will play its third game in seven days when it goes to Mobile to play South Alabama in Mitchell Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Both teams are 2-0 ahead of the match-up, with the Tigers’ wins coming over Davidson and Georgia Southern and the Jaguars’ wins over Pikeville and Southern Miss.

While the preseason SEC media poll picked Auburn to finish fourth in its league, the preseason Sun Belt coaches poll chose South Alabama to win its league. The Jaguars have not won the conference title since 2008, but they’re one of the most experienced teams in college basketball.

Ja-less Murray State will bring a post presence to Thompson-Boling Arena for tonight’s 9 ET game.

Rick Barnes said his #Vols won’t win without good post defense [free] https://247sports.com/college/tennessee/Article/Tennessee-Vols-Basketball-Murray-State-Rick-Barnes-Post-Defense-138448031 … via @GrantRamey

--- Quote ---Murray State has a tall task ahead of it this season. Moving on after the Ja Morant era.

In two seasons with the Racers, Morant went from a recruit that didn’t scratch the surface for major college basketball programs to the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Morant led Mafia to a 28-5 record last season and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament while averaging 24.5 points in 36.6 minutes per game. Now his old team is starting over without him.

“They return some experienced players that played for an NCAA Tournament team a year ago that are a year older,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said on Monday.

Tennessee (1-0) hosts Murray State (1-0) Tuesday in a 9 p.m. Eastern Time start at Thompson-Boling Arena. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.

The Racers beat Southern 69-49 to open the season, returning two starters from last season in guard Tevin Brown (11.8 points per game) and forward KJ Williams (7.6 points per game).

“Their roles change year to year, I don’t care what you bring back,” Barnes said. “They are a really solid defensive team. I think they very much play the way we like to play — the play inside out.

“They have a really good post presence, really solid defensively. Like I said, they have experienced guys who have played in some big games. They have added to that.”

Tennessee knows how Murray State feels. The Vols lost three players to the NBA Draft after 31 wins last season in Grant Williams, Admiral Schofield and Jordan Bone. Kyle Alexander ended up with an NBA contract and a shot in the G League.

ATHENS —
Georgia coach Tom Crean is drawing attention in college basketball for embracing the relatively new concept of “positionless” basketball. But if he ever finds himself in the need for a pure point guard, he has one.

--- Quote ---Freshman Sahvir Wheeler is generously listed at 5-foot-10 on the Bulldogs’ roster. But forgetting the fact that he’s not very tall, one doesn’t have to watch Wheeler play for long to recognize that he possesses all the inherent skills of a traditional point guard. Those skills were on display in Georgia’s season-opening win over Western Carolina last week, and they’ll be on display at 7 p.m. Tuesday as the Bulldogs (1-0) play host to The Citadel (0-1).

Georgia up 48-40 at the half in Stegeman.

Anthony Edwards appears to have a cred where he can and take three steps.

Kentucky on the ropes at home against Evansville  ??? ... The SEC as a whole looks very vanilla this year. This league will not be getting 7 or 8 teams in the dance this year for sure... Probably just 5, mostly 6 likely for the league.

SugarHillGaHog:
I'm really disappointed to see UTenn getting back into the game against Murray State.  I was really wanting them to go down with Kentucky.
