The Golden Lions (1-1, 1-0 SWAC) are coming off their most decisive conference win of the Cedric Thomas era, a 52-34 win at Alabama A&M in which they gained 645 yards total offense in scoring seven touchdowns. Thomas and his staff have been intent all week on keeping the same level of focus for Saturday's home opener against Langston.

"We have another opportunity to compete, regardless of who shows up," Thomas said. "We can't have a letdown as far as the division of play. When you look at our past, we've lost to NAIA schools, Division II schools, and Division I schools. We're in no position to take anyone lightly. Whomever shows up, we have to compete, and through preparation, that part will take care of itself. At 6 p.m. Saturday, we have to defend the den. Competitors love competing, and as long as we do that, we'll have the right mindset."

UAPB football will play the first of six home games this season against a Langston team (1-0, 0-0) that is ranked in the NAIA Top 25.

"We have to be prepared for all of it," Thomas said. "The competitiveness, the schematics (of what they do). They have great coaches. They do a good job from a discipline standpoint. Coach Quinton Morgan really has those guys playing at a high level, and they are used to winning. So regardless of the level of play, those players are going to come in chomping at the bit. Some perceive that it's playing up, which I don't see it that way. It's just playing football, so they'll be ready to play."
