Fall Ball Starts Today (9/6/19)
« on: September 06, 2019, 02:42:10 pm »

So glad it's back. Hope anyone who is around and can make it to any scrimmages etc keeps us updated--much appreciated! NOT a depth chart but for the first drill of the fall they players were aligned as below per Ryan Folkes (HK at 1B perhaps the most noteworthy - not that this means anything).

C - Casey Opitz, Cason Tollett, Dom Tamez, Nate Stevens
1B - Heston Kjerstad
2B - Zack Gregory, Braydon Webb
SS - Casey Martin, Cullen Smith
3B - Jacob Nesbit, Cole Austin
LF - Jesse Pierce, Jason Hodges
CF - Christian Franklin, Coby Boulware
RF - Curtis Washington Jr., Trey Harris

I'm really surprised Jason Hodges isn't starting out at 1B first since his arm is supposedly weak and I wouldn't be surprised if Nate Stevens ends up in the OF.

Hodges repped both right field and 1B (behind Kjerstad) today.  Hodges arm is noticeably weaker than the other outfielders but man alive does he have pop in his bat.  Hit two no doubters during bp today.

5 quick notes from today's practice -

Kjerstad at 1B - looked great especially on relays.  Showed ability to dig and get the ball fast to home.  Also looked good fielding pop ups in foul territory.
Zack Gregory at 2B was impressive - great range and quickness
Marty's accuracy looked great at SS - this is only during infield but hopeful this bodes well for the future.
Hodges has some pop - great power in his bat.  Doesn't mean much in bp but real excited to see him against live arms.
Hunter Milligan is back??!??  I thought Hunter retired due to injuries.  He was really impressive out of high school and another lefty with stuff is always needed.

RF Update:
Hodges and Smith took reps at 1B, Nesbit took reps at 2B, and Pierece took reps at 3B during more infield drills today. Kjerstad did get reps in RF. Lot's of movement between infield/outfield and around the infield. A lot of versatility being shown day 1.

Anything on Coby Boulware?
worked CF ----- didn't get to see him take BP but looked ok at CF.  He just happens to follow behind Dom's heir apparent (Christian Franklin).  Franklin's catch radius is pretty amazing.  I don't think he has Dom's arm but you aren't really going to see that in an opening practice.

add --- it's early.  Boulware will get some reps at multiple positions.  He was a freshman all-american at TCU playing 2B but we have a log jam at almost every position.

another add - Curtis "CJ" Washington is a modern day utility player.  Worked reps at right field, fielded a couple balls at CF, and got some reps at 3B.  I hope we find a position for him b/c his speed and bat potential gives him tremendous upside.

Just a FYI - I'm what some realists call a homer ...... I know it and have no problem admitting it.  But the way it manifests itself is by focusing on the positive.

In other words - I won't lie or twist stats to avoid telling the truth BUT I will simply focus and highlight the good things I saw.

If you want negative you won't find it much from me.  BUT if you want a small glimpse of "realisim" then I will simply say that nobody in the OF has shown the ability to replace Dominic Fletcher's arm.   It is early and there wasn't a real scenario (outside of relay work) for them to show the arm but replacing Dom's arm is like replacing Knight on the bump.  We were blessed to develop Zay so hopefully we will do the same in regards to Franklin in CF.  Franklin does have Dom's range plus more athletic ability.

Fall Ball Roster

*you will have to open the image in a new tab see it better*
Based on the posted roster, the following players have transferred out:

Jordan McFarland (knew about him)
Caleb Denny
Andrew Stanley
Dillon Lifrieri (knew about him)
Steven Sanchez
Will Barker

Also, Kevin Kopps is listed as a RS Jr again which is interesting to see.

Based on the posted roster, the following players have transferred out:
Then you add losing Chet Allison to the MLB and having Wosman (Mizzou) and Neves (?) not making it in.

Really interested to see Hunter Milligan pitch.  If I remember correctly: Hunter was originally committed to Miss State when Johnson was there but came here with Johnson.  He then battled an injury and eventually retired.  Would love to see him battle back.

Also, it's amazing how many moves will be made between now and first pitch.  There is probably a set # of players who are pretty much set in stone but scholarship and roster size limitations dictate that some from this initial sheet will move on before next semester.

Anyone catch the scrimmage today?
yes sir -
not a ton of offense - ended in a 2-2 tie.  These "scrimmages" have time and work limits which is why the scrimmage only went 6 innings.  The first hour or so was dedicated to BP and base running.

Blake Adams looked impressive on the bump (4 k's----- and 7 first pitch strikes).

I was impressed with freshman CJ marks - his delivery reminded me of a lefty Reindl.

Boulware is fast (3 stolen bases) and made a great play in left field (diving catch).

Nesbit got reps at SS and looked smooth also hit a double today.

Gregory has a great arm in right field.

Kjerstad is doing a good job at first. He currently looks natural at 1B but he isn't having to do too much.  No game saving digs or unbelievable grabs....yet.  He does field good there when the opportunity arises. Batting wise he put on a show in BP but only had a single during the scrimmage.  He went 1 for 2 (groundball single - groundout) and 1 walk.

Dominic Tamez and Nate Stevens took reps behind the dish.  Tamez has good pop time but neither are at Opitz level yet.  We stole a ton of bases and I'm not sure if that is due to speed or poor play at catcher.  We did work on jumps before the scrimmage.

Liam Henry stuggled a little bit but he'll have time to bounce back.

Trey Harris had a good day - 2 for 3 with a single and double.

ADD- The above notes are primarily from my head but I did track Blake Adams' pitches and he looked good.  He was even getting squeezed a little by the blue but battled through.  He did give up a couple hits and a run but all in all had a good day for a freshman.

I'll also add this - those who come to the scrimmage expecting a full out game will be leave dissapointed.  These scrimmages are for the coaches to fill the roster and for the players to improve in GAME LIKE situations.

There are usually 10 batters in the lineup (vs. 9).  The coach reserves the right to end the inning any time they wish.  If a player is thrown out they will usually go back to first and reset to make the pitcher work with men on.  Sometimes the coaches will put runners on just to make the pitcher work.  Pitchers never go deeper than 3 (most likely 2) innings.  A good portion of the alloted time will be a normal practice working on base running, fielding, bunting (that should make some fans giddy), BP, and all types of drills.  Then you add the field crew doing work and the "normal" fan might be bored.

However, if you are a baseball fan and want to see some darn good practice then I'd advise you to get to Baum-Walker if you can.  The wife and I love it.

EDIT:  I know most of us that post in here are baseball fans and appreciate the game.  I just want to clarify what these scrimmages usually entail so that people don't get pissed off and "ehmergerd theyz not even scrimmagin right - that's why dey medicoery" themselves into a frenzy.

Go to the stadium and watch the development of our team..... it's fun.  You'll also notice that DVH is involved in about every facet of the practice.  I've even seen him help with groundswork.

Didn't get to see today's scrimmage.  The schedule for the rest of this week is the following:

Thursday: 2-5p
Friday: 2-5p

also - according to the season ticket holder page the scrimmage vs. Oklahoma will be at 7:30 pm (not 7:45).

Sept. 20 – vs. Oklahoma (7:30 p.m.)

Good for him! I always want players to succeed while they're here, but hopefully a change of scenery will do him well.  And best wishes to him unless his team's path crosses with ours at some point(s) this year.

Heavy rain falling now.  See if it moves out in time for a scrimmage or if they will move it indoors.

I wouldn't think they postpone it tomorrow due to fighting gameday traffic.  Maybe Sunday is on the table.

Not sure the amount of work they will put in next week knowing they have a scrimmage against Oklahoma on Friday.

moved indoors - haven't heard next week's (starting Sunday) schedule yet.

just a funny tidbit - I'm not sure if the turf guys are having to split time with DWRRS but somebody forgot to tarp the field.  Drove by and saw a pretty sizable puddle next to 2B.  They'll get it fixed before the scrimmage but funny and almost odd seeing heavy rain without the field tarped.

Reminded me of this -

I didn't mention this yesterday but Peyton Pallette looked great in Thursday's scrimmage.  I believe he had 6 strikeouts in 2 innings of work.  It looked like he mainly worked off speed stuff and it was nasty.

Monke had 5 strikeouts in 2.2 innings and seems like he added velocity.

Trey Harris has been performing well in the scrimmages I've attended. He had 3 hits in this scrimmage.

Blessed to live in NWA so it makes it really easy.  I don't have a pro team but I follow the prohogs and hope they all do well.  Kind of gives me some positivity to bridge the gap between seasons.  I forgot to add this in my last scrimmage update.  Opitz started at catcher in the scrimmge on Thursday and the canon is still full powder.  Look forward to the season as well.

The rules used to be that if they played both sports they had to be given the full ride.  I am not sure what the rules say about if they give up the primary sport under which they signed but the schollie is awarded a year at a time I believe and until that year in which it is awarded is concluded I am quite certain that he would still be a full ride.  But I also dont think it counts against the baseball limit, but is listed against the football teams limit.

When he quit playing football, he lost his football scholarship for 2019-2020 and beyond. He is likely on a combination of in-state tuition, Arkansas Scholarship Lottery money, baseball scholarship, and any other academic scholarship money he may have been eligible for.

If he plays both sports, and is on scholarship, he a "counter" against the football scholarship limits.  When he quit football he lost the football scholarship and doesn't count against the football scholarship limits.  Then he gets whatever he can negotiate with Van Horn for a baseball scholarship.  It would be very rare to have a "full ride" baseball scholarship.  But if you are going to give one your Friday night starter is probably the one to get it.

Late night heads up for those coming in on Friday.  There is expected rain but you know Arkansas weather - just come prepared.

Also, they are currently doing construction around the new student housing off of 15th street.  They are actually putting in a roundabout at the junction of 15th and Beechwood..... which is interesting to say the least.  This can and will impact somebody's transit.

Can't wait till they open gates on Friday!!! Go Hogs!!!!!

Marty with a 2 run bomb in a 7 inning scrimmage today.  Christian Franklin goes 2 for 3.   Opitz is still doing Opitz things behind the dish - run at your own risk.

Excited to see what our starting lineup will be come Friday. My guess:

1. Zack Gregory - 9
2. Casey Martin - 6
3. Heston Kjerstad - 3
4. Braydon Webb or Bryce Matthews - 7
5. Cole Austin - 5
6. Christian Franklin - 8
7. Casey Opitz -  2
8. Jason Hodges - DH
9. Jacob Nesbit - 4
starting pitcher - Noland, Wicklander, or Kopps
