Week 2 Questions here
« on: August 12, 2019, 09:22:11 pm »

How bad was the behind the scenes stuff during BB time here and do you think he just really quit recruiting as some had said. Not asking for details just trying to figere out how many recruiting classes it will take to get back to decent. Usually I say year 3 is fair time to judge a coach but honestly if everything Iím hearing is true then Chad Morris needs 4.

Honestly I havenít seen such a weak roster since Jack crows last season.

NEVERMIND Mike.. didnít realize you where reading on air.

How much of the football team was working against the staff last season? 25,50,75%? What about percent of starters?

Lou Holtz followed Frank, who was known to be a good recruiter, so the talent level was in pretty good shape.  As a matter of fact a look at that roster will be populated with some pretty famous Hogs.  So, in my opinion this was not lightning in a bottle.  Lou's better years at Arkansas seemed to be earlier in his tenure, where his recruiting was less evident.  No doubt he was a good coach, but without the aura of Notre Dame, his ability to attract talent was suspect.

What similarities or influence from Chad Morris's Clemson experience do you see in the program?

Man, I'd love to know the answer to this, once and for all. Then we'll never have to talk about it again.

I guess the extension of this was how those negative things carried over to Morris' first year?...that's where a lot of the "what went on behind the scenes" questions REALLY took off.

Do the recent hirings of relatively low profile coaches by the U of A demonstrate a commitment to return to the "Broyles plan" of hiring up and coming coaches with upside rather than the "Long plan" of going after big names; and, is this newfound commitment done willingly on the part of Yurchak or is the GOBN flexing its muscles once again?

Last year I recall you reported that a Former player had said to you (After watching full practices) the O-Line was struggling and it was going to be a very long season.. (Implying the O-Line was not looking good).

...any insights this year from any former players, on what they see specifically with O-line performance/improvements?

With the increased big play potential on offense And the Added Deep ball threat , Do you see the defense going to a more aggressive style consistently. Last year we went to conservative to often . Playing not to lose and it cost us . Especially playing off Wr's . Additional speed at Corner may allow closer cover instead 10 yards  off them . we made ourselves a victim to quick hitting passes

Has Arkansas ever had a true rivalry in which the other team hated/wanted to beat us as much as we did them?

Many would like to point to Texas as a rival however Texas never saw us as a rival.

When Morris was hired, he talked about improving the local HS programs (aka inviting them to practices, etc), which will hopefully pay dividends down the line with improved instate recruiting.  What has Morris been involved with towards achieving that goal?

Yeah, the 1977 team was set up for success (my freshman year). JFB had gone 5-5-1, but  injuries had just destroyed the 1976 team (started 4 quarterbacks). 77 also had some special offensive linemen returning, courtesy of JFB.

Lol
not 4 free years just saying this Roster is so depleted that itís almost like taking a program over from the death penalty.

At this point as long as Morris keeps getting good classes I will look the way on the record because Iíve never seen the talent level so depleted.

Which brings me back to my original question how did it get this way ? The guy came in with almost 0 to work with. This is the one time Iím going to be  patient .

Mike do you have any tidbits about the overall atmosphere in the BAC during the Bobby Petrino era? I had a friend of a friend who worked there tell me a few bizarre things and just wondered if any of that made it to the mediaís ears? Stuff like non coaching staff was not allowed to make eye contact or approach him. Also heard no one was allowed on his floor during game week. I also heard some more scandalous stuff but Iíll stop there.

This Lou "Holts" fella you speak of, is he any kin to Lou Holtz that coached the Arkansas Razorbacks after Frank Broyles stepped down from coaching?  If so, he stepped into a perfect situation and inherited a loaded team full of talented players that had been recruited by Broyles and his staff.  One thing for certain about Frank, his assistants were top notch and so were the players brought in during his tenure.

Mike,

With the loss of Noah Gatlin, who do you see as being the strength on this offensive line? Who do you foresee starting at Left Tackle, in my opinion the most important position on the OL?

Thanks and GREAT segment

Mike, 3 part question:

Back in November of '17 I believe you stated that Malzahn was "choice number 1 for the Arkansas job".  Do you have the specifics of what was actually offered to him at that time? ...and how does that dollar amount compare to what Morris signed for?

Also, how many of the same boosters are still there that wanted Malzahn when Bielema was hired"

Thanks

When will the Hogs cease playing a home game in Little Rock, or could that be averted if Arkansas and Arkansas State finally agree to play each other every year at WMS?  ???

I know the current contract calls for the Hogs to play Missouri at War Memorial every other year, with the Red-White spring game in the year's in between. But that is just a band-aid contract. I will miss watching the Hogs play in Little Rock, but I completely understand why they would stop. It is all about $. Sometimes tradition must give way to common sense.

If, as many believe, Starkel is destined to quickly overtake Hicks for the starting gig, why would Morris not just start Starkel from the beginning of the first game and build timing and experience? Given his experience, some would say that Starkel is not at risk of being fragile and needing to ease into things anyway. Itís also not like we open against Alabama.

We have all witnessed programs go through highs and lows including this one. One point of emphasis you hear new coaching staffs speak about is having to change the culture. What does that mean to you, and could you shed some light on what you feel the more sustained programs have in common?
