Daulton Hyatt moving to WR
« on: July 17, 2019, 11:53:40 am »

What's that all about?  That's according to Tom Murphy ADG.

Anyone have any more info about that?

It's GOT to be a "the other two guys are working out, maybe you should transfer". Of all the positions to switch him to, WR? LOL. That is our top-heaviest position on the field.

Writing was on the wall when he did not push past those jokers last year and was getting buried with incoming players.  Hopefully he does well with the switch

Generally switching a guy (particularly a QB) to a different position that he probably hasn't played since 4th grade is about the most direct (without explicitly saying it) way of telling someone "Please just transfer"

Matt Jones got that 1st round money because of that move to.

Seems like I remember coaches saying he was the best athlete we had in the QB corps. Supposedly good speed but I don't trust our press releases when it comes to listing 40 times. Hope it works out for him he must want to be a razorback most kids would have transferred.

As I mentioned in another thread, apparently Hyatt is the one to bring up the move first. Probably saw his lack of chances at QB and decided to give WR a try (not that I think it is any better depth wise for him).

you also have to take into consideration that by moving him self to reciever .. he would also come available for special teams as well.. I would also expect that the work load is less than at the QB position

Arkansas has nine scholarship wide receivers. Four of those are freshmen. A couple of the scholarship players are not going to play much.

Nope, not even close to being overloaded.

I think if the coaches wanted him to transfer then he wouldn’t still be here.  Good for him though.  It would have been easy to transfer or even quit football altogether.

Just a question:  Are there fewer time commitment demands on a WR than a QB?  If he is happy being a student and is going to ride out this 4 years without seeing the field again, I would think a position that requires less film study would be appealing.  Of course I've never been a football player and I don't play one on TV.

Coach said Hyatt himself requested the switch to wide receiver.  Let's hope he gets to play some and does well.

Robert Johnson made the switch to WR, and while he wasn't our top guy, he made a few clutch catches.

Seems like previously being a QB would make a switching to WR pretty natural because you understand better what the QB is thinking.

Eric Crouch was a tough little dude, I remember watching him play LSU one time, and his Nebraska team took a cheap shot on the LSU QB, after that the LSU Defense started T'ing off on him.  and he kept running QB sneaks knowing they were trying to knock him out of the game every play.

Speed is great but not essential. Morgan wasn’t a speed demon but the young man knew how to get open and could catch it.

It's a little different comparing guys that succeeded as college quarterbacks and played professionally at a different possession.  These guys were the best athletes on their college teams and were just playing the position that allowed them to impact the game the most.  All of them could have starred at multiple positions early in their college careers.  I think we'd have seen Hyatt by now if he were that type of athlete.  I'm pulling for the guy though.

Morgan always surprised me.  Didn't really look the type but then he snags a pass for a first down.  Good player for the Hogs.

I don't think Coach Morris sends messages that he wants someone to transfer. He just talks to them. See other thread on how many have transferred and not made power 5 rosters.

There was a photo of Hayes (or maybe Tatum)at Oakland and he had strings of Stick-em coming coming from his hands to his helmet.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that now DH might be the person in the WR room that knows the playbook best. This will help the rest of the room learn faster.

Even more importantly, it might help the offense tremendously to have somebody on the field who understands the LOS reads and can make the correct route adjustment. He doesn't have to run a 4.5 if he can find the hole in the coverage and actually make the break the QB expects him to make, instead of not being where he should be and causing the QB to get buried. How many times did we see that last year?

David Sills from WVU was a QB that turned into a WR and did pretty dang good for himself at the college level.

Sounds like you're on to something.

Why go through all of the work if you're never going to see the field?

Not muffing kickoffs and punt returns is a thing.  He's got to be sure handed and both the athletic ability and vision needed to be a QB would translate well.

He might not be a homerun threat but making good decisions and not losing yards or the ball might just give him a place.

I'd make a bet Rice wouldn't do as well in today's game. Probably more downfield passing, but schemes are different. And players are just bigger and faster than ever. Still as it stands, greatest WR of all time. Moss might be most talented, though.

Eh, not any better sources there than folks that quote that 4.7 number.  I saw that apparently a couple scouts/coaches say it was more like a 4.55-4.59.  Which I could believe.

Yeah, not sure how people are saying that's our deepest group right now. Half of our position group transferred out and the other half are still getting fitted for their first set of pads.

While I doubt Hyatt has the skills to be an NFL level receiver, recall when Derby switched, we were already well established at TE with Sprinkle and Henry. He earned his way really to the 1b spot behind Henry and in front of Sprinkle.

Again, I doubt that Hyatt is going to become an NFL WR, but he is coming into a position group where there is nobody established right now much less already having two future NFL players established in front of him. So, to say that he has no chance and will be buried is a bit premature.
