Malzahn and Mason Top list while Smart Saban sit cool, calm, yet collected

On the ‘hot seat,’ Auburn coach Gus Malzahn speaks out about firing rumors

Butch Dill/AP

--- Quote ---Malzahn’s tenure at Auburn has a silver lining. With Kevin Sumlin gone from Texas A&M and Hugh Freeze no longer at Ole Miss, he’s the only coach in the SEC who has beaten Alabama coach Nick Saban.

But there’s been rocky times, too. After routing Georgia 40-17 at home in 2017, the Tigers only mustered seven points in the SEC Championship rematch. That season ended with an uninspiring loss to an American Athletic Conference team. The season before that, the Tigers lost the Allstate Sugar Bowl 35-19 to Oklahoma and went 0-2 against Alabama and Georgia.

This season, then, is shaping up to be a significant one. The Tigers’ opener against Oregon (August 31, ABC) will show just how improved they are from a season ago. It’s an even calendar year, so both the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide must visit Jordan-Hare Stadium this season.

If Malzahn wants to quell the hot-seat talk, he needs to walk the walk this season.

Ugly Uncle:
Gus better be outstanding.  I predict they will get blown out by Bama this year and Gus will almost need to run the table next year to survive.

--- Quote ---Coaching: Yes, it was the players, and not Odom or his staff, who turned the ball over three times. Yes, it was the players who failed to wrap up, leading to big runs. But ultimately, when a team loses to an 18-point underdog after having all offseason to prepare, that coaches shoulder the bulk of the blame. Missouri didn't have a suitable game plan to stop Wyoming's rushing attack, it didn't have an answer when things started to go south in the second quarter and it has apparently failed to learn from two straight years of slow starts. Odom accepted responsibility for the loss afterward, but at a certain point, that needs to translate to visible improvement in early-season games. GRADE: F

Rucker: Pruitt facing tough decisions for Vols' future

--- Quote ---GAINESVILLE, Fla. — I don’t know what Jeremy Pruitt is going to do, and I don’t know what I would do in his shoes.

That’s where things stand after Tennessee’s incredibly frustrating 34-3 loss to ninth-ranked Florida on Saturday at The Swamp.

Days like this create times that try men’s souls.

Make no mistake about the reality of this situation. It’s very real, it’s very bad and it’s almost certainly going to get worse before the possibility of better days appearing on the horizon.

Words largely elude me at the moment. I still can’t believe some of the things I saw Saturday, just like I can’t believe anything I saw in Tennessee’s loss to Georgia State (that still feels like a typo) and several things I saw in the Vols’ loss to BYU.

A team that should be, at worst, 3-1 with one single-digit loss is now 1-3 and staring down the very real possibility of being the worst team in the history of one of college football’s winningest programs.

Jarrett Guarantano is holding back this Tennessee offense in ways I never thought possible.

Some of Guarantano’s throws Saturday were some of the worst throws I’ve ever seen from an SEC quarterback. Several players were absolutely wide open within 15 yards of him, and he missed them. I can’t explain that. I don’t know who could explain it. You should be able to jar an SEC quarterback from a deep sleep at 3 a.m. and watch him complete those throws.

Guarantano has had trouble finding open players downfield. That’s not good, but it’s the kind of thing you see even at the major-college level from time to time. You can work around that and still be a decent team. You won’t win a championship, but you can win some games.

You can’t work around some of the throws and some of the decisions Guarantano made at The Swamp on Saturday. You just can’t.

The opening moments of Saturday’s second quarter couldn’t be believed despite being seen.

Take Muschamp off the Seat guys. Gets an endorsement from AD Tanner

--- Quote ---Carolina did not expect to start the 2019 season 1-3. While some Gamecocks fans are ready to move on from Will Muschamp, athletic director Ray Tanner remains confident in the head coach.

“I am very fond of Will Muschamp. I am very fond of his coaches,” Tanner said on 107.5 The Game, per Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “I believe in them now as much as when they came here. … The expectations are great. We understand that.”

...

Questions surrounding Muschamp’s future at South Carolina started immediately after the Gamecocks fell in Week 1 to North Carolina. While Week 1 contests are rarely considered “must-win games,” it was considered one of South Carolina’s more likely wins with Alabama, Georgia and Clemson on the schedule. After that loss, Tanner was asked Muschamp’s buyout. Tanner said it was “in line with other coaches around the country” and also expressed his confidence in Muschamp.

Derek Mason addresses sense of panic in program, urges players to be ‘greedy’

--- Quote ---Vanderbilt is in a state of flux following the Commodores 31-6 loss at Ole Miss as they fell to 1-4 on the season.

There have been issues at quarterback, the offensive line and whether key players on offense are getting enough chances to make plays. After Saturday’s game WR Kalija Lipscomb, who had 7 catches for 69 yards, including one for 43 yards, was asked if there was a sense of panic, and he agreed.

“If he sensed panic, that may be his feeling,” Mason said. “The idea at the end of the day when I talk to the leadership council, there’s got to be a sense of urgency. Panic is about not being prepared to respond. Right now these guys are prepared to respond. So we just got to be urgent about the work in front of us. I thought Tom Brady said it best, the best teammates that he’s always loved are the ones he didn’t have to waste any energy worrying about because they always did their job. That’s where we’re at right now. I don’t need Kalija, or any of our guys, worried about wasting energy on somebody else doing their job. When you can focus and get greedy about doing your job, and gaining what there is to be gained, you become a pretty good player, and when you become a pretty good player, your team becomes a pretty good team. That’s how teams get better, so that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Vanderbilt plays host to UNLV this week, which is a team in a similar position...

Derek Mason to Vandy fans:

“I’m talking to Commodore Nation ... (players) represent you. They need your support in this game. I’m big enough to take responsibility (for losses). ... But what I need you to do is support these young men. They are you. They are Vanderbilt."

--- Quote from: NWA Hog on October 17, 2019, 12:19:43 pm ---“Clearly, our Win-Loss record at this point in the season is not where anyone would like it to be. A loss is a loss, but I am encouraged that in each of our last three games, all decided by one score or less, that the Razorbacks had a chance in the later stages of each to earn a win. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed that we were unable to do that, than the young men and the coaching staff who have put in countless hours in preparation for this season.”

“However, within this program, our focus is on the opportunities that remain ahead. There is plenty of football left to be played this season and our coaches and student-athletes are continuing to prepare day by day for the remaining six regular season games on our schedule.”

“I hope to see you on Saturday at Razorback Stadium.”

LOWERY: Is MSU creeping towards Croom-era bad?

--- Quote ---"Many fans are already calling for Joe Moorhead’s job. They feel that Moorhead has underachieved in his two years at the helm and it’s hard to argue with them."

Not long after Mississippi State’s most recent loss to Tennessee, I had a question posed to me that caught me off guard:

“Is this the worst MSU’s football program has been since the Croom years?”

As one of only a handful of MSU media members still around from Sylvester Croom’s tenure as head coach, I took a moment to ponder what was being asked before replying: “I think it might be.”

Had not considered Barry Odom before this.

jbcarol:
Ranking each of the Tigers’ 13 losses under Barry Odom since 2017 by level of embarrassment

--- Quote ---13. Alabama (away) — Oct. 13, 2018

12. Georgia (away) — Oct. 14, 2017

5. Wyoming (away) — Aug. 31, 2019
When I started this article, I thought this loss would be ranked higher. Mizzou had been getting buzz about potentially being 8-0 entering a Nov. 9 game at Georgia. Nope.

3. Purdue (home) — Sept. 16, 2017
This game was absolutely brutal.

2. Vanderbilt (away) — Oct. 19, 2019
The Tigers entered 5-1 and had just climbed back into the Top 25.

1. Kentucky (home) — Oct. 27, 2018
As confusing and painful as last weekend’s loss was, it still doesn’t top this absolutely brutal loss to the Wildcats last year. The Tigers led 14-3 at halftime and then just … stopped? They didn’t record a single 1st down after the intermission, going 3-and-out on 8 consecutive drives.

Even so, the defense preserved the 14-3 lead going into the 4th quarter. Then, a punt return touchdown by Lynn Bowden Jr. set the tone for the Wildcats’ comeback.

Adding insult to injury is the fact that CB DeMarkus Acy was flagged for pass interference on a play at the end of the 4th quarter. Wildcats, of course, won on an untimed down.

That was just an utter collapse from the coaching staff.

--- End quote ---

Also shows the importance of a DE like Josh Allen, the highest of 2-stars out of HS. Something Mizzou would know about.

Five of the bigger mistakes Chad Morris has made since arriving

--- Quote ---More and more among Hog Nation are jumping on the bandwagon with those who, in 2 years and 15 consecutive SEC losses, have run out of patience, concluding that Morris is simply in over his head.

Arkansas football program under Morris has taken a decidedly downward trend and as the weeks pass, optimism for a turnaround wanes...

Welcome back to the hot seat, Will: Gamecock fans upset with total meltdown on Rocky Top

jbcarol:

--- Quote ---Alabama torched Arkansas Saturday night 48-7. The Crimson Tide was up 48-0 before Nick Saban called off the dogs and started running the ball.

Tide’s defense forced four Arkansas turnovers, including three INTs by quarterback Nick Starkel, and its defense couldn’t stop backup quarterback Mac Jones.

Chad Morris:
“Well, definitely want to credit Alabama. Obviously, they’re the No. 1 team in the country for a reason. We had entirely too many mistakes against a really good football team. We knew we were going to have to play really well. Turnovers, turning the ball over, giving 24 points off in the first half off of turnovers are not that, that’s not what this is about. We’ve got to do a better job protecting the football. It was a rough start out of the game, minus-17 points in four or five minutes. I thought our defense, when we came out, held them to three points, held them to a field goal. We did some good things there. But you can’t spot the No. 1 team in the country 24 points in the first half and expect to come out of that. We’re onto Mississippi State. We’re ready to get back home and get into the month of November.”

Auburn football: Will Tigers fold or rise up after latest loss to LSU?

--- Quote ---There’s a scene in some movies and TV shows where a pack of people are rafting down a river and all of a sudden come to a fork: if they go right, they will be greeted with beautiful sunshine and calm waters. Go left, and a storm is brewing with choppy waves and thunderstorms.

Unfortunately for Auburn, it doesn’t have a choice of which path it would prefer to take to close out the season. It is already getting a bit stormy and the current is coming close to rapid levels after the Tigers lost to LSU 23-20. What lies ahead should be seen as an obstacle course, with varying challenges — Ole Miss a simple gate to clear, Georgia a hailstorm —

Malzahn’s seat is once again warming up and he will do everything he can to cool it.

jbcarol:

Not entirely up-to-date

Moorhead is SEC coach with the hottest valid seat based on those with seats.

jbcarol:

--- Quote ---The words “job security” and “Odom” were not supposed to meet in the same sentence in 2019. Now that all-too-familiar topic is all people want to discuss. What a deflating trip it’s been.

Odom entered this season with a roster ripe with talent, a graduate transfer quarterback who was recruited by many and the most manageable schedule a member of the SEC could imagine.

This was supposed to be 10-win thriller. Nine at the worst. Even if the bowl ban handed down by the NCAA after its investigation into academic misconduct by a former athletics department tutor was upheld after Mizzou’s appeal, Odom’s fourth season was supposed to represent a breakthrough.

Yet here are the Tigers at 5-4 with three games to go.

They have lost three games to double-digit underdogs since the season kicked off at Wyoming. They have lost three in a row after winning five straight at home. They have lost the benefit of the doubt.

Florida, ranked 12th, comes to town next. The Gators just mashed Vanderbilt, 56-0. The Tigers lost at Vanderbilt, which is now 2-7.

Then comes Tennessee, winners of three in a row. UT’s only loss in its last five came against Alabama. The Vols just beat Kentucky, 17-13. Mizzou lost to UK by 22.

A dysfunctional Arkansas team that already fired its coach waits at the end of line, though that’s a road game for the Tigers, and they have not yet won away from home.

--- Quote ---“Today, I want to make it clear that Will Muschamp is our football coach and will be our coach going forward. President Caslen and I are fully supportive of his leadership and his development of student-athletes on and off the field,” AD Tanner said in a statement. “Coach Muschamp and our staff are dedicated to the success of Gamecock football. They have built a program where our team plays for each other and for our University, and they deserve our full support. While we wish the outcome of some of our games would have been different, we are excited about the future of our program.”

Currently, Muschamp’s Gamecocks sit 4-6 on the season with two games left — Texas A&M and Clemson. USC needs to win both to become bowl eligible, and that’s certainly an uphill climb.

Two days ago, USC President Robert Caslen gave Muschamp a vote of confidence, too, … sort of.

“Coach Muschamp is my coach. That’s the message. He will be my coach through the end of the season,” Caslen said. “And then, just like any other coach that’s out there, whether it’s a soccer coach, whether it’s the equestrian coach, whatever, they’re going to do an end-of-year assessment, the athletic director does. Then, we’ll see what’s up.”
