Sad news about Randy Romero

Not gone yet, but it's not looking good.

Glad he finally got voted into the Hall of Fame when he did, which was WAY OVERDUE when it happened. Can't believe it took as long as it did.

I was at Belmont Park the day of the Go For Wand disaster and Randy came back to ride a horse (I think for Roger Attfield) in either the Classic or Turf. I got a good look at him on the horse going through the grandstand tunnel to the track and he did not look well. Later revealed that he'd broken a rib.

Can't even begin to express how much I admire this guy for all the adversity he's had to put up with and yet he's maintained an upbeat attitude throughout.

He definitely was the “Boy Wonder” at one time. I saw him ride Personal Ensign in the 1988 Breeder’s Cup to complete her undefeated career.

Sad to hear.

Randy was fearless, but not reckless fearless (see PVal).  Hope his final days are as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Randy was the TOP GUN at LaDowns back in the glory days before the gambling boats ruined top shelf racing at Louisiana Downs. I remember as a late teen watching Randy Paul is what everyone called him, R.P. Romero outride Larry Snyder and the John Lively and the Whited brothers like they were nobodies. Randy Paul is one of the greatest ever to get a 'leg up'. He has been sorely missed from racing and will be missed even more when his spirit departs from this world. What a great talent he was.

ad: May his heaven be jumping on Personal Ensign's back any time he pleases and ride that great mare to yet another nose victory over "Big Mama", Winning Colors.

Great rider. He experienced some of racing's highest highs and lowest lows.

"He rode Personal Ensign to a dramatic, last-gasp victory in the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs, keeping the Hall of Fame filly unbeaten, and was aboard another Hall of Fame filly, Go for Wand, when she broke down in deep stretch of the 1990 BC Distaff at Belmont Park."

RIP Randy.

Great reminiscence about Randy by Dallas Stewart in today's Saratoga Special.

I've attached both the cover page and page 28, which has the article.
