Stupid (or Cool) College Traditions
« on: June 13, 2019, 12:12:29 pm »

I posted this in another thread, but thought it would make a nice topic on its own.
What college traditions do you feel are stupid? Which ones do you like?

Fans generally have nice things to say about another team....if they win.

Fans generally whine about everything...when they lose.

You can read the same stuff here. I remember a lot of things said after the A&M series...after we lost the series.

All schools have some kind of 'weird' tradition. It's great to the home folks but seems dumb to others.
"Rock Chalk, Jayhawk" --- what the heck does that mean?
"Let's Go, Peay" --- Austin Peay University
The stupid male cheerleaders in their white uniforms doing those dumb gestures at Texas A&M. What's up with that? They have one gesture where it looks like they're reeling in a fishing line. Then they suddenly sprint off to the side, in a big hurry. I've been watching Texas A&M 'yell leaders' since the SWC days and haven't figured them out yet. They have mental issues or something.
What the heck is a Horned Frog?
"War Eagle" --- what the heck is that? I know where it came from. But still...how much sense does that make today? None. It comes from the Civil War and somebody seeing an eagle fly one time. But....your mascot is a Tiger. And...what does the 'war eagle' have to do with this football game here? It's dumb.
"Calling the Hogs". To an outsider, it looks like the stupidest, most redneck thing ever. Sooie pig! You can't 'call' a true razorback anyway, and don't want to. They may trample you, but they're not coming to you
Texas Burnt Orange. Is that seriously the best color you can come up with? It looks like vomit. It makes me vomit.
Miss St Cowbells. Another seriously redneck thing. If you don't want to be called a 'cow college' as Bear Bryant said once, then don't ring cowbells
S Car Gamecocks. Gamecocks(roosters) are actually serious to-the-death fighters, which is why they have cockfights for sport. But a chicken is not very intimidating.
Tennessee. Is Rocky Top the only song you know? Do you have to play it 15,000 times? You're just reinforcing your hillbilly image. "Wish that I was on Ole' Rocky Top, Down in the Tennessee Hills...."
West Virginia. Nothing speaks hillbilly like having a Davy Crockett lookalike as your mascot. Embrace the mountain man.
Syracuse Orange. Orange...what? You couldn't decide, so you just landed on a color?
Ole Miss. You don't even know what you are. You're afraid to use Rebel anymore. So you halfheartedly use 'Black Bear'. That makes a lot of sense. And nothing says Mississippi like 'land shark'. Sharks are synonomous with Mississippi (sarcasm). And that was based on a defense full of bought Hugh Freeze players anyway, so even more the worse.
OU Sooners. Nothing is as inspiring as honoring land robbers who cheated and beat others to claim land in the 1800s. Let's honor them!
Notre Dame Fighting Irish. What are the Irish known to fight for? Each other at the bar?
Alabama Crimson Tide. Another confused fan base. First of all, the closest thing you can find to represent 'Tide' is a detergent box. So, they tried an elephant also. But that has nothing to do with their actual mascot, the Crimson Tide. I'm so confused. So you have a mascot which is incapable of having a mascot. Good job!
UC-Santa Barbara Banana Slugs. Ok, tell me you did this on purpose. You're trying to be the 'anti-' intimidating mascot, on purpose, right? Tongue-in-cheek thing. Because otherwise, nothing says INTIMIDATION like a banana slug.

I could go on and on about dumb college traditions.

And the Grand Prize Winner of Stupid College Traditions is..........Texas A&M !!!!
Seriously, those people have some serious issues down there. Watching those cheerleaders just makes me cringe.
And when they decided to do something halfway cool like build a bonfire, they screwed that up too, ending in tragedy.
Congratulations Texas A&M. You have the dumbest traditions in college athletics.

Add your own here....

The Razorback is one of the coolest mascots. A true Razorback is a ferocious beast that you don't want to mess with. And it's unique. As Houston Nutt loved to say, "There are a lot of Lions, Tigers, and Bears---but there's only one Razorback!"

Likewise, a Michigan Wolverine is a ferocious creature and a cool mascot. And there's only one of them, too.

Florida Gators are very cool mascots. Unique, and ferocious. Love the Gator Chop.

South Carolina Gamecocks are unique, and very ferocious. They will literally fight to the death. But a rooster doesn't seem too frightening. I still like it, though. I love seeing people in convenience stores with a hat that says COCKS

LSU Tiger mascot is pretty cool

Ok St Cowboy mascot is pretty cool

Good one.
I agree. That is cool.
Forgot about them.

It's good (and surprising) the Seminole tribe allows them to that. More of them feel honored by it, I think, than offended.

That reminds me of several old AIC jokes.

"Hendrix College. Where the girls are girls...and the boys are too."

"Q. Who do they call Arkansas Tech the Wonder Boys? A. Because you look at them and wonder.  "

The USC-W sword plant is awesome too, IMO.

If I'm not mistaken the Seminole tribe has given FSU complete authority to do all that.

Script Ohio....dotting the I.  How many students wont even be able to read that now?  Their marching band is amazing with their halftime shows, but that is the worst in my opinion.

I still believe we have to have a live Tusk (whatever number) running out on the field in front of the football team. I have seen him being fed grapes by kids for crying out loud, put a harness on him with a helmet to cover his tusks, and trot him out there.

Yes, they have.  The Seminole tribe also helped design the patterns on the edges of the football jerseys.  There are 3 patterns - fire, spear, and horse.  Also, FSU and the Seminole tribe have a very good relationship - it's the main reason the school is allowed to keep the name 'Seminoles', despite the ruling by the NCAA to ban all Native American mascots.  FSU doesn't do anything Seminole-related unless receiving permission from the Seminole tribe.

Conversely, I know it's not a school-wide tradition per se, but the whistling idiots from Vanderbilt really grind my gears.  I don't hate anyone, but they are about the closest thing to it for me.

One more - I pretty much can't stand anything tOSU, but their marching band does some pretty creative stuff.

Ha...first thing that popped in my mind when I read this was that Bama should have an elephant leading their team out. LOL

They just need a big roll of toilet paper, dragging a box of tide detergent.

I’ve often wondered why they didn’t do that. I love the way Colorado runs Ralphie the Mascot on the field.

I've been to an Alabama game. They do play the sound of elephant screeching over the loudspeaker in the pre-game. But no live elephants. Darn.

If Miss State is allowed to ring cowbells we should be allowed to use air horns. Artificial noisemakers yes or no SEC.

"Let's Go, Peay" --- Austin Peay University

This was inspired by James “Fly” Williams, the great scorer for the Governors.
When he played, fans would chant, "The Fly is open, let's go Peay!"
After he left for the ABA, the chant evolved into “Let’s Go Peay,”

Ah...the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say.

I bet it would be a great story how Fly Williams even landed at Austin Peay University. Seems like someone posted about that recently.

OU band playing one song, over and over and over and.......
Which is actually stolen from Yale!

Yale: "Boola Boola, Boola Boola, Boola Boola, Boola Boola"
OU: "Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner"

Same melody!

The 'O' in 'OU' definitely doesn't stand for 'Originality'
