If you are going to Omaha: I29 still closed
« on: June 11, 2019, 06:49:35 am »

I live in St. Joseph. (Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended) just an FYI...

I-29 in St. Joseph to Omaha is still closed as of this Morning.. Have to go 35N to Iowa and across.. Just trying to save some folks some time.

Mine took me to me to 36 and then 75 in Kansas at St Joe as the alternate route. What’s the best way?

I feel sorry for all his tenants. You know he’s been riding around NWA all week collecting rent like a medieval king.

Trust me go to Des Moines and over. Went both ways in April. Reroute at St Joe is 2 lane farm road with huge pot holes, traffic, and deer . People in Omaha advised me to go back through Des Moines and it was same time wise but much easier without potholes and deer and being all interstate.

I wasn’t sure Omaha had an airport large enough to land it.

No idea just met several locals who told me to go all interstate through Des Moines after I went there through St Joe. Was much less stressfull and that was before farming started.

75 is a decent road but a lot of 2 lane and a lot of traffic.
You might consider going up 77 to Lincoln. I hear it's not as much traffic as 75. Probably too far out of the way for Arkansans.
Also you could use 71. I don't know the condition, but you wouldn't go as far east as I-35 will take you.

This is the correct summation if I29 is out IMO.

I called Sec Chao, I told her a bunch of Arkansans were heading to Omaha, she built the fire under Mo and Iowa.

Hey Rice, please ensure that tweet is still accurate.  That tweet looks to be from 8 May.  We had more flooding (I’m up here in Fort Leavenworth — the “free part” mind you) up here after that period which closed I29 again.

Fake news. Rice is trying to free up some more tickets by getting people stuck on I-29 while he jets in.

No problem.
Believe me we all wish it was open still. It's a horrible mess. And it may not stop all year. We drove through in the short time it was open. Nothing but water where there should be crops or cattle. I-29 was an island in many places.

Detour suggestion if you don't want to go through Des Moines:

The route I'd recommend (and its still a lot of interstate) would be to exit onto I 70 W as you're going through Kansas City, then exit north onto US 75 in Topeka and take it all the way in to Omaha.

You'll see 2-lane on 75, but it will still be about an hour quicker than going over to Des Moines on I35, and it will keep you completely clear of any of the road closures/detour congestion around St. Joe.

“Flooding along the Missouri River will reroute drivers from Arkansas to the College World Series this week.

We spoke to spokesmen from the Missouri and Iowa DOTs about the I-29 closure and their suggestions for alternate routes.”

That's how I usually go when driving up from Dallas.  75 isn't bad but I bet with all the extra traffic due to the closures it gets really congested on Saturday.

With the road closures and detours, what’s the estimated time to get to Omaha from NWA?

MoDot's interactive map is showing I-29 is now open (at least to IA border).  It's highlighted in Orange which means width restriction.  Nothing over 12' wide in the NB or SB Lanes.

Here is the link just checked it 10:00 am.

https://www.modot.org/2019-northwest-missouri-flooding

Iowa DOT is showing I-29 from the state line to Omaha basically closed still as of now and detours either to 275 (east or I-29 going north).  Showing to take that for about 40 miles then can hit I-29 again

Its weird that the MODOT map is showing it open with a lane restriction, but the most recent text report on that same page lists I29 as still closed. It also looks like its still closed on this map too: http://traveler.modot.org/map/index.html

I don't really have a dog in the fight as I won't go that way to Omaha, and I really hope it is open, but I would be shocked if it opens this week even if the waters recede enough to clear the roads. I read that they're worried about erosion under the road beds and bridge supports being an issue.

Hopefully whoever heads that way first can post in here.  I'm leaving NWA at about 10:00 am tomorrow morning which would put me at St. Josephs around 2:00 will definitely report findings.  Restroom conditions along the way will be reported in the mega travel thread.

Some info from google maps, which is typically reliable and does take into account road closures (generally) including I-29 it appears. I have no actual experience driving to Omaha during CWS, so curious what others think of their suggestions.

They suggest mostly similar suggestion above as traveling north above Topeka (tho instead of going straight over to Topeka, taking I-29 a little ways north of KC before turning off).

They "estimate" 3.5 hours of travel time between KC and Omaha. If you route from KC through Des Moines to Omaha, they estimate that at 5 hours.

Of course, this is traveling today on Thursday when there's little traffic. I'll be curious to see how traffic might affect their suggestions on Friday and Saturday.

Just north of St. Joseph at mile marker 56.8 on I-29 the road is closed. You are diverted to highway 71. This is as of 6:05 AM this morning.

Yep, showing 3hrs 40 min from blue springs so not to bad. Raining here in KC area so that might slow some down but shouldn’t be bad.
