By the way. Did you see the neck on him in the picture in the article I posted? No wonder the dude broke helmets. With that bull neck I'd be breaking walls, running through cars, all kinds of stuff.

Pension benefits in the NFL, like that of any other job, are based on the amount of time players are employed by the NFL. To be eligible for pension benefits in the NFL, a player must play for three years. (For a year to count for pension purposes, the player has to be on the roster for at least three games that year.) The player then earns credits for each season played that increase the amount of his pension.

Currently, a player with the minimum three years of play would receive an annual pension check of $21,360.

Wow.  Considering the amount of money involved, that is not much money at all.  One would expect a pension of three or four times that based on current salaries.

They were discussing this on The Buzz the other day - I believe Spaight was under concussion protocol more than once over the last 3 seasons. I'm sure that was a big factor (if not the biggest factor) in his decision to retire.

Typical age requirements apply for former NFL players to be paid retirement benefits ó players must be 55 years old to receive money from their pension. If players want money earlier, they can choose to receive benefits from the annuity program as early as age 35. So, even though players retire at a young age, the full NFL retirement benefits canít all be accessed right away.

Get that degree.

Heís 26. His lifetime earnings thus far have been 2.1 million. I understand thatís not all bring home. Now I have two degrees, a BA and an MBA. I make pretty decent money but heís already made more than I am going to make probably in the next 20 years given my current salary.  There isnít a degree offered anywhere thatís going to allow him to rack up that kind of money in that kind of time.

how much of that 2.1 million do you think he has left?

there is a good chance that a day job is in his future unless he invested wisely.  even then, quarterly dividends would only provide for a relatively modest lifestyle.
