Jonesboro High of two years ago finished top 10 in the United States of America, I believe.

Besides the aforementioned West Memphis team, JHS was maybe the best ever.

JHS was ranked very high then. That is about all I know about that team though as I stopped keeping up with the program when I moved away for school.

JHS had a very good team in the 06-07 season. State champs, ranked 50th the in the country. Three loss team including one on a buzzer beater to Memphis Mitchell, or Hamilton. Can't remember which.

LaDustin Williams played a UAFS and then the Tulsa 66ers. Academics blocked him from playing at a higher level in college. He was the best player on the team.

Jeremy Thomas played D1 at AR St.
Chris Parks played on the college level, but not D1.
Logan Nutt played at AR St., Ole Miss, and SEMO.
Johnny Harris played at Central Baptist in Conway.
Delta Cleary was drafted by the Colorado Rockies and maybe could have played D1 ball, but definitely a star at any other level.

Most games weren't close after the first quarter and usually out of hand by half. Fun times.

All three games against a Forrest City who boasted Marcus Britt, Kelson Stewart, and Stephon Weaver were some of the best basketball games I've watch at any level period. FC was Jonesboro's other two losses.

The '74 Conway team lost in the "Tournament of Champions"  (tourney with all of the State Champs by class) to the best Champ I have seen, the '74 Northside Grizzlies.  Beat LR Hall (with Sidney Moncrief) in the 5A State Championship.  Led by Ron Brewer.

That West Memphis team with Lee was awesome.  How come this years Marion team is not talked about they only lost to out of state teams.  Have three D1 Players.  Still not better than that Lee team but that is pretty impressive.

That West Memphis team was first to cross my mind too, unreal team. I'm class of '81 tho so I may be a bit biased.

That's a great question, and one of them has a great story.

First, West Memphis is a different place and not necessarily all Hog, even though it's in Arkansas. You're obviously right there in Memphis. You're also right next to Tennessee. You're also in the Mid-South area. So a kid there probably will be a Hog fan, but not necessarily.

The story I always heard was Keith Lee never considered Arkansas that hard. He was a homebody and was considering Ark State, which was much closer. The tale goes Frank Broyles wasn't about to lose a great recruit to Ark State, so he turned the Indians in for some recruiting violation accusations. I don't remember what became of those. But the end result was A-State didn't get Lee, he stayed even closer to home and went to Memphis State.

(Years later there was a football recruit, Johnathan Adams, who was similar in that he was content to stay at home and play for A-State(he was from Osceola).

I have no idea how Michael Cage ended up way out there at San Diego St. Was it grade problems? Other? Even it wasn't Arkansas, obviously he didn't land at a different Power 5 school, either.

Cage had no grade issues, he is a very intelligent guy.

That's an odd place for a guy of his talent.
I really don't know the answer. I did at one time, but have forgotten.

the '76-'77 Pine Bluff team with US Reed was awfully salty.  Reed was the only D1 prospect but he was a really good one.  If memory serves Jerry Bridges (PB coach) talked Coach Sutton into offering him a scholarship.

Jerry Rook was the coach of those Pine Bluff Zebras. Jay Dickey, a former UA tennis player and great friend of Sutton's and a booster/lawyer from PB, former 4th district congressman as well later on, continually talked with Eddie about recruiting Reed to the Hogs.

His coach, David "Smokey" Gaines attended Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis.  May have been a family connection there.

Gotta be GURDON in 1982!  That's Arkansas' own Hoosiers story!

Or just maybe West Memphis with Keith Lee and Michael Cage in 1980-81?

Gurdon knocked us (El Dorado) out in Semi's of Overall Tournament and next night shocked Hall on TV to win overall title. After we lost to them on Friday night, Coach Warren Harshaw drove us back to the Hotel in Conway and said "ya'll go get your s**t out of the rooms and let's get on home". Never saw him that pissed in my 3 years playing for him. We had beat Cutts and Goshen's Bryant team in '82 AAAA Semi's at the buzzer and were looking forward to playing Anthony Walton and Hall on TV but never got there. Season felt like a failure even though we were 4A Champs

West Memphis went back-to-back 26-0 seasons I believe. Lee, Cage, and Price! yeah they would be my choice the time I lived in Arkansas.

West Memphis for sure is the best.  One of the better teams that I haven't seen mentioned would be the '88 Gosnell Pirates.  That team had Joe Harvell and others that went on to play college ball.  Pretty impressive especially for such a small school.

If you dont have the West Memphis team with Michael Cage, Keith Lee and a host of others you should remove you question.

Bingo. Sixty consecutive wins. Two straight state titles. Two straight overall titles. Two future NBA guys.

Did those NBA guys have the career of Joe Johnson?  1999 Central against any team any era.   They beat the number 2 team in the state 97-54 in the title game.

You gotta break this into two categories: Small schools and Big schools.

Small Schools:  1990 Caddo Hills and 1991 Dermott

Big Schools: 1991 Parkview and 1980 West Memphis

Im curious as to why no one is mentioning the 1999 Central team? It has the greatest player to ever play from Arkansas on it in Joe Johnson and his supporting cast was absolutely unfair. Best team ive ever seen.

Lol...Still West Memphis and it isn't close. Do not care about their NBA career. HIGH SCHOOL. 7 guys off that team played college ball at some junction. Joe was an amazing player and probably the 2nd greatest pro from the program. But WM had the best HS team in this state ever.

That is what I remember he did not want to go to any school in the South and ended up in San Diego with Smokey Gaines who was from Memphis.

Wow and I thought Parkview's 89 class with 8 D1 players was a lot.  5 seniors 2 juniors and 1 sophomore ended up playing college ball.

1992 LR Parkview.  All 5 starters played D1 ball and the least heralded player on that team was Derick Fisher who UALR was talked into offering.

If it's not Parkview, West Memphis with Cage and Lee, it's hands down Jonesboro 94. Ali Thompson, Al Herringer, Painter, Corey Ross. Those dudes could play with anyone. Seems like JHS gets forgotten but in highschool basketball, I don't think there's a better program in the states history.

I'm sure the information is out there if you want to look for it.  Scan the archives of the ADG when they ranked greatest teams you'll find it.

My brother played on that team he also graduated in 99 and played with the AR Rockets AAU team if you know anything about 99 Central you know what the connection to the Rockets was.

I'll take my brothers word if he said 10 of his teammates played college basketball then I believe him.

I ask because I can think of two other than Johnson, Mark Green (UALR) and Jarrett Hart
(K State).

On the women's side, Northside Lady Bears had a helluva run from 99-02.  2002 team went 29-1, finished #3 in the country (lone loss was to #1 Lynwood), and had a McDonald's AA in Tamika Kursh.

West Memphis (1980) is the best and the '92 Parkview team is next.  Loaded with talent and both well-coached.
