Just In Time 2019-20 SEC basketball ranking

Joe Cox

--- Quote ---14. Vandy
Maybe Jerry Stackhouse works out, but the move smells like desperation, not like a program that was one of the league’s best not that long ago...

13. A&M
Look, we love the Buzz Williams hire, too. But the Aggies were terrible this past season, and they don’t have much help coming in recruiting.

12. Mizzou

11. Arkansas
As with A&M, probably a good hire in getting Eric Musselman. As with A&M, the cupboard is pretty bare, particularly with Daniel Gafford apparently gone. The Razorbacks will need some patience...

10. Ole Miss
Kermit Davis had a stellar first season in Oxford, and will continue to make opponents fight for everything they get against the Rebels. The potential loss of Breein Tyree is a big one, though, and without him and departing senior Terence Davis, Kermit 2.0 might lack...

9. MS

8. Alabama
Nate Oats is the league’s new coach (pending whatever happens at LSU) in the best shape to make a 2020 run...

7. Georgia
How good is Anthony Edwards?  [The term "Wing" Man was invented for Edwards]

Enough to take an 11-21 team from last season into the NCAA Tournament

6. LS
Hardest team to rank. Yes, the Tigers won the league. Yes, most of their stars are testing the NBA waters, and their head coach is in NCAA/administrative...

5. SC

4. UT Vols

3. UF

2. Aubbie
Hey, the Tigers did have that whole Final Four run to their credit. Yes, Jared Harper is apparently gone, and Bryce Brown is definitely gone. But the Tigers are likely to return a fair amount of their firepower and add to it with a solid recruiting class

1. Kentucky
With the return of Ashton Hagans, it’s clear that Kentucky will return at least some of the players who got them to the Elite Eight. Meanwhile, they’ll add a top 3 recruiting class and senior transfer Nate Sestina. This far out from the season, there’s not a ton of confidence in this projection, but it makes sense to start UK on top.

Rick Barnes finally discusses plans for Tennessee’s roster heading into 2019-20 season

--- Quote ---Volunteers advanced to the Sweet 16 this season, but they’re losing star G Admiral Schofield and potentially SEC Player of the Year Grant Williams and talented PG Jordan Bone as well.

Williams and Bone could still return, but Schofield and F Kyle Alexander are out of eligibility, freeing up a couple of roster spots.

What does coach Rick Barnes plan to do with those spots? Barnes:

“You’re always looking around for players, but right now I don’t see anything happening with our roster,” Barnes said during his press conference on Tuesday. “I don’t, but I’ve been caught off guard before and surprised before with it. We’ve talked to our players, and we’ve had great meetings with them, got their take on everything. We were out recruiting the other day, and Kim (English) made a great point to one of the recruits about the first day he walked into practice when the guys were working out. These guys are jumping right back into it, and the guys that didn’t get a chance to play last year feel like they have a chance. Their focus has been terrific.

“We know we have to be ready for the guys that are looking at the NBA to stay here, and if they do, we have to be ready.”

Here's what @AuburnMBB's upcoming roster looks like now that the NBA Draft deadline has passed: https://trib.al/tPRfcse

--- Quote --- NBA Draft deadline passed without any word from Austin Wiley declaring for the NBA Draft. So while he apparently didn’t put his name in the ring, both Jared Harper and Chuma Okeke did.

With those two looking toward their future, and Bryce Brown, Horace Spencer and Malik Dunbar all graduating, the Auburn basketball roster will be significantly different entering the 2019-2020...

Point guard: J’Von McCormick
Auburn is also bringing in Tyrell Jones

Shooting guard: There really isn’t anyone from last season’s roster that could take this spot.

Small Forward: This is where Auburn finally has some returning faces. Samir Doughty started in this spot most of last season

Power forward: This is where Purifoy has the inside track to start. He started his first game of the season during the Final Four, and was a critical piece as the Tigers dispatched North Carolina and Kentucky —

Center: Auburn should feel pretty good about the center spot. Anfernee McLemore returns — Then there’s Austin Wiley...

The Big 3 bracketologists have put out projections taking early departures (like Gafford), grad transfers (like Kerry Blackshear, Jr.), and transfers out (excluding Gabe) into account.

UK: Consensus 1–seed but no one’s overall #1 seed. PJ Washington and Tyler Herro left early to perhaps be journeymen NBA players. 1-n-done fatigue has set in with the Blue Blood fan base.

UF: Kerry Blackshear, Jr., who has been projected as SEC Newcomer of the Year and SEC Player of the Year, moved Mike White’s Five to the 2-line on ESPN and CBS brackets. Shelby Mast missed the news or still needs to be impressed listing Gators a 2-seed.

AU: USA Today’s Mast put the beleaguered Bruce Pearl and his returning players on the 2-line while Lunardi was thinking 7-seed and Jerry Palm a 6-seed.

LS: Another program under careful FBI scrutiny, USA-T has them on the 5-line while ESPN is thinking 8-seed and CBS a six.

UT: Last season’s 2-seed lost the heart and soul of the team you would think. ESPN lists Vols as an 11–seed while CBS is thinking 5-seed and USA-T a 6.

MS: Ben Howland’s team is a 7-seed on ESPN’s latest with USA-T a 9-seed and an 11-seed from CBS.

OM: Joe Lunardi lists the Rebels as a 10-seed. USA-T as 4th out.

Bama: Jerry Palm lists Nate Oats’ Five as an 11-seed while ESPN as 7-th out.

UG: Shelby Mast lists Tom Crean’s squad as an 11-seed and the last 1 in.

Frank Martin: ‘I’ve been excited about this team since last year’

--- Quote ---COLUMBIA — Frank Martin has three reasons to be excited.

It’s the start of another basketball season, his eighth at South Carolina.

He really likes his roster, the first time he didn’t have to add players during the crucial summer months.

And through a month of conditioning and two days of full practice, nobody’s injured.

“Last year was one of the (most fun) years I had in coaching because of all the adversity thrown at that team,” Martin said. “When A.J. (Lawson) got hurt in that Alabama game, I was like, ‘Why?’

“We went from extinction to we win that game, we’re in the NCAA tournament conversation. All of a sudden, boom.”

The 2018-19 season was a strange one. The Gamecocks stumbled through their non-conference season and were nearly dead before they started the 18-game SEC gauntlet. With three players already lost for the season due to injuries and the rest of the team nursing wounds, USC could rely on at most eight players.

Yet as Martin’s teams always do, the Gamecocks played better as the season got longer...

Florida Gators junior center Gorjok Gak missed all of last season, and after this week, he is facing more time on the sidelines

The Gators announced Thursday that Gak suffered a dislocated shoulder during Tuesday’s practice. He will be out indefinitely

@giana_jade takes a look at @AuburnMBB's roster overhaul for 2019-20 here 🏀🔗👉 https://trib.al/2QXMdgH

--- Quote ---Bruce Pearl said it’s amazing how much they “don’t have in.”

“I leave practice every day going, 'Man, we got a lot done,' ” Pearl said. “Because we have a lot to cover.”

Pearl is dealing with a very different team than the one he coached to the Final Four in 2019. That team had 13 upperclassmen. This one has nine newcomers.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever had a roster that was so experienced on one end and so inexperienced on the other end,” said Pearl, who was surprised to hear he’s entering his 41st year in college basketball.

"bounced" ..... so did the guy who fell from a ten story building!  Seriously, thanks for the kind words.  Who knows what we will do.  It's kinda hard to predict a team that played UNLV and looked as if they should have been mercy-ruled at halftime and then beats a ranked team.  imo the kids have an opportunity to get a good education and I hope they enjoy the sport experience.

What Nick Richards' ankle injury could mean for Kentucky basketball

--- Quote ---LEXINGTON — Kentucky basketball might look on its first 2019 exhibition game as not worth the trouble should an injury to junior forward Nick Richards prove serious.

Richards rolled an ankle early in the second half after landing on Georgetown College guard Jake Ohmer’s foot. UK went on to win the exhibition game 80-53, but Richards did not return to the game.

“Swelled up,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said after the game. “I didn't see it on the tape, but they told me he rolled it pretty good. I don't know if he stepped on an ankle or if he just rolled it, but it was swelled up.”

Richards status is uncertain after the injury — it should be noted that sophomore point guard Ashton Hagans told reporters he did not believe Richards' injury was serious  — but if his return is delayed by even a week it could have significant implications on Kentucky’s season with the regular season opener versus No. 1 Michigan State looming on Nov. 5.

SEC Season Preview: Power Rankings, Preseason Awards and taking down Kentucky?

--- Quote ---Seven McDonald’s All-Americans, a host of impact transfers and four new head coaches enter the fray. While some familiar faces are hovering near the top, the depth and overall quality of the SEC continues to get better each year.

Calipari added multiple five-star freshmen (Tyrese Maxey, Kahlil Whitney and Keion Brooks) and a top-flight graduate transfer (Bucknell’s Nate Sestina) to a roster that returns a lot from last season.

Losing P.J. Washington, Tyler Herro, Keldon Johnson and Reid Travis won’t be easy to replace. Point guards Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley both remain.

It was the offseason graduate transfer addition of Kerry Blackshear Jr. from Virginia Tech that turned Florida into an overnight national title contender.

The return of head coach Will Wade along with many key ingredients from last season’s Sweet 16 team makes LSU one of teams to beat.

Even though Auburn and Tennessee lose a lot of core players from last season, both programs should still be counted on to return to the top half of the SEC.

Nate Oats (Alabama from Buffalo), Eric Musselman (Arkansas from Nevada) and Buzz Williams (Texas A&M from Virginia Tech) all made the NCAA tournament with their respective programs last season as they are proven college coaches of former top-25 programs. Oats making the leap from the MAC to the SEC is perhaps the most enticing development to follow among the three “familiar” hires to the league but it will also be intriguing to see Musselman recruit at a bigger program and to see Williams run a program in his home state.

Vanderbilt’s hire of former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse is one of the most fascinating decisions in the country.
--- End quote ---

jbcarol:

--- Quote ---Exhibition games are scheduled for a reason, and no one needs to get their undergarments in a twist about them.

Coaches — even ones as brutally honest as Rick Barnes — tend to say all the right things about treating exhibitions like regular-season games. That’s exactly what they should do. You want your players treating it as seriously as possible.

As a coach, though, you also get an opportunity to experiment with things. You get to try different rotations, different sets, all sorts of different things. If they work, great. If they don’t, shelf it or go back to the practice floor and tweak it.

Here’s the thing, though: For the first time in three years, that process will extend well into the regular season for the Tennessee basketball team.

Barnes has more or less known exactly what he would get from a vast majority of his team on a daily basis the past two seasons. His Vols had experience coming out of their ears. They could do the basketball equivalent of finishing each other’s sentences. That familiarity opened a door and allowed us to view some of the most beautiful offensive basketball in the college game. You enjoyed it from the stands or a television screen. I enjoyed it from press row. We all enjoyed it. Crisp offensive basketball is one of the most beautiful sights in sports.

Adjust your expectations for a bit, though.

I refuse to call any season with a backcourt of Lamonte Turner and Jordan Bowden a “rebuilding” season. That’s not the right word. But the Vols are a team in transition right now.
