They probably had clauses in the contracts that required some sort of offensive scheme that involved more than dribbling around for 25 seconds and then throwing up a prayer before the buzzer went off, assistants that knew how to coach and weren't family members and to make the post season tournaments at least 2 out of 3 yrs on a consistent basis.
