NFL ref. Red Cashion passed away Sunday
« on: February 12, 2019, 12:44:42 pm »

Sunday at 87 years of age.  Ref'ed in the league for 25 years.  Most probably won't remember him because he retired in 1997.

Famous for his "FIRST DOWNNNNN" calls.

He was the Dutch Rennert of NFL officials.  They are yelling out their calls in heaven now, no microphones and speakers needed.

He was a good official. You never saw him pull out an index card to measure a first down ala Steretore. You could see a gap between the index card and the chains on TV and he still made the wrong call..

Had the pleasure of hearing the Dutch at Wrigley Field. I was way past first base near the right field area and could easily hear him call strikes. Loved his strike 3 call. Him and Red were great.

I played in an American Legion game in Oklahoima back in 1980 something where the ump called me out on a bullcrap strike. When he called it he yelled, "RrrrrriiikeUH 3 gotteeem!" I laughed out a "No Way" and he pulled his mask and said, "He Smokedcha, Boy!"

Freaking awesome story man! Love an ump with some character, even if he did punk you on that call.

I'm pretty sure I have a game he reffed that the cowboys played in, I think against Green Bay in 96, and he was always memorable.
