Favorite old nfl qbs?
« on: January 26, 2019, 09:30:59 pm »

I started following the vikings many yrs ago because of jim lindsey.  Havent had a strong attachment to any pro team since the vikings lost the 12th or whatever super bowl under bud grant

Fran Tarkenton was fun to watch tho.
Joe Kapp hurdling guys.
Joe Willie with the Jets.  Felt bad bout the fact that his knees were so bad and he got killed on sacks.

I didnt like him at the time,(see vikings record against bradshaw in super bowl) but bradshaw was a tough sob, excellent qb and a funny sumbitch too.  Didnt care for his singing tho.

I didnt like dallas but staubach was amazing.

And Dandy Don Meredith in the booth.   Kids today are really missing out because those guys werent divas.   Well, except jim mcmahon.  I really liked his sense of humor and personality

Doubt it counts as old qb but I used to love watching Warren Moon sling the ball around that man had a cannon

Or 2.  One got him into the nfl ad seems one got him into relationship woes.   One made him some money and one probably lost him some

You included Blanda which reminded me of Stabler.  Stabler the best i remember was a backup to somebody whose name i cant remember.   Seems stabler and blanda were both backups to who?   I cant remember who oaklands main qb was at that time  i remember old slow running sticky hands Belitnikoff was their target.

Then the thought was, who was the most successful left handed qb(since best is an opinion).   Has a lefty ever matched the rightes?   I heard it explained during steve youngs playing time that the opposite rotation from a lefty really affects a receiver.

One that I remember is 5' 7" Eddie LeBaron, a pro-bowler who was called out of retirement to start most of the games in Dallas's first two seasons.  I think he won four or five games as starting quarterback for the Cowboys. Followed by Dandy Don.

I grew up watching all the 70's greats, Staubach being my favorite of course, but I always was in awe of Unitas, a bigger than life type to me.

That was when they really played big boy football.  They end up at the bottom of a pile and Conrad Dobler was biting whatever he could reach.

I remember seeing him and a group of Bama folks in Hermanís when they came to play the Hogs. A TV crew came in and we all called the Hogs. The look on his face with a big grin was kinda cool.

Another QB who is not remembered to the level he should be.  The Cleveland Browns teams of the late 40's and early 50's were as good as any team in any period since.

Since we are speaking of McMahon, what a reminder he has become about the price the game of football can extract on the body and mind.

He was quite the character when he played - fun to watch and capable of just about anything...at anytime.

Brett Favre

Iím not old enough to have watched most of these guys play live, but Favre was the guy I thought of. As a Vikings fan, I hated him but he was amazing to watch. Weíd take the lead with 45 seconds left on the clock and I just knew heíd win the game for the Cheeseheads and it made me so mad...and heíd inevitably break my heart.

Man oh man does this thread take me back! Joe Namath, Darrel Lamonica, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, Dandy Don Meredith, Archie Manning, Dan Pastorini, Dan Fouts, Blanda, The Snake, Tarkenton, Unitas, Bradshaw, Len Dawson, Unitas, Morrall, Griese,  great times growing up and worshiping those guys.

And just how important Monday Night Football was then with Gifford/Cosell/Meredith! Sometimes over 50% of the TVs in this here USofA just to watch and hear what Cosell and Meredith would say next. Sad that the NFL lost that over time.
