Build your own All. time Hog Defense
« on: January 14, 2019, 01:32:21 am »

DL Billy Ray Smith
DL Dan Hampton
DL Marcus Harrison
DL Jamal Anderson
LB Martrell Spaight
LB Jermaine Petty
LB Sam Olajubutu
LB Rickey Williams
CB Chris Houston
CB Ahmad Carroll
S Steve Atwater
S Ken Hamlin

Alot of other great players worthy of team, will make up a 2nd team later. Some may also want to include a rover position with players like Zac Painter (his senior year anyway after playing a bit out of position his first few years as cb).

;D. Hey, can't fault a guy for trying! Good eye. Plus with the way our defense has played the last 3 years, I thought I might try a new defensive formation, with 8 men in the box and  4  defensive backs as well....  :P

Looking back and doing a little research, WOW, we have had a lot of great DL on the hill.

Jimmy Walker, Ron Faurot, Raven Caldwell, B.R. Smith Sr and Jr, Lloyd Phillips, Trey Flowers, Wayne Martin, Dan Hampton, Anderson, Tony Cherico, Doughnut Richardson, Henry Ford, and I am 1000% sure I missed at least a dozen more.

Wow, that was a bad omission! Let's try another list, not so much a 2nd team as perhaps team 1A

DL Trey Flowers
DL Wayne Martin ( cant believe I missed him on first go around, he also had a great career with my favorite NFL team, tha Saints!
DL Loyd Phillips
DL Tony Cherico (undersized even during his era in the 80s but man his heart was worth 50 lbs of muscle, could penetrate into the backfield better than anyone I remember)
LB Wayne Harris
LB Jerry Franklin (a tackling machine)
LB Tony Bua
CB Lawrence Richardson

Some are asking how you leave Flowers out and put Wayne Martin in.  WM was the man for us and the Saints.   1988 All-American and finshed Razorback career with 25.5 sacks (Flowers had 18 career sacks.)  WM is second in Saints history in sacks (85.)  Wayne was actually on a different level than Trey Flowers.

A couple of honorable mention: Henry Ford, Jimmy Johnson, Tony Cherico, Ray Lee Johnson and Ron Farrott.

As for the original question, the first two names on my list...the "automatic" choices...are Ronnie Caveness and Loyd Phillips.  I honestly think there is a case for Caveness being the greatest football player to ever pull on a Razorback uniform and Phillips is right up there with him.  Dan Hampton and Billy Ray Smith, Jr. are probably two more obvious picks.  Steve Atwater was a great player but we have had so many tremendous safeties that I would have to at least think about that one for a few minutes.

Cliff Powell was an absolute tackling machine who played his best in the big games.  Like Caveness, if he had been eligible for four years there would be no talk about Hamlin or anyone else setting the career record for tackles.

For a single season I'm not sure anyone was better at linebacker than Jermaine Petty.  I don't think that necessarily puts him on the all-time team.  He's sort of like Kendall Trainor in that for that one year no one was ever better.

This is a tough question.

No way I can add to what's been said. I was glad to see one poster mention Ron Faurot. We always called him Ron Ferocious. He and Billy Ray, Jr. were extremely bad news for a lot of offenses.

I'll just say this: Any All-Time Razorbacks Defense, for me, would have to START with Steve Atwater.

This is a tough question.

Caveness is easily the first linebacker to go on the list. The rest we can pick from the menu.

A Petty pick is tough, like you say Eastex, because he flat out made All-American, but he had that one great season. Has his signature stop in the 7 OT game.

Dennis Winston had his signature game against USC in Little Rock.

Cliff Powell was solid for years.

Wayne Harris was a legendary hitter back when you could do that. Don Meredith's first selection for our all time team.

I think Bua would be my next. I hated that they moved him to safety. Still do, to be honest. But theres' not much to pick between he and a lot of other mentioned, all excellent players -- Franklin, Olajabutu, Danny Rhodes.

You make a solid point that is at least debatable.  We had two all-time great Razorback, All-American defensive tackles at one time.  Walker was great and doesn't get enough recognition.  Of course Hampton was great, too.

Dick Bumpas is underrated in retrospect despite being one of our most decorated players, as in first team All-American and SWC Defensive Player of the Year and Hall of Fame member.  He was part of the '69 defense, along with other first team All-Americans Cliff Powell and Bruce James as well as Rick Kersey, Mike Boschetti, Lynn Garner, Jerry Moore (second team All-American), Terry Stewart, etc., that was magnificent.  They gave up 7.6 ppg to lead the nation.

E-Billy Ray Smith, Jr.
E-Trey Flowers
T-Dan Hampton (He should be on everyone's list)
T-Wayne Martin
N-Henry Ford (Yes, I run an old 50 front)
LB-Quinton Caver
LB-Dennis Winston
SS-Odis Lloyd (He really was a SS or Rover)
FS-Steve Atwater
C-David Barrett (thank you for the pic against Tim Couch)
C-Chris Houston

Sorry guys, I started watching the Hogs in 1972. I am well aware of the history of Lloyd Phillips, Wayne Harris, etc. but I got to chose the guys I saw play. Only exception would be for Joe Ferguson at QB if this were an offensive chart. Also note, Arkansas is rich with Free Safeties much more than corner backs. I could have easily listed Hamlin, or my old favorite Greg Lasker.
