Field ready freshman
« on: January 10, 2019, 06:41:49 am »

Times have officially changed. Kids are developing quicker and younger than ever before. Freshman are now coming on campus physically ready to play.

This should make the turnaround for a rebuild faster, good luck to CCM. I hope to see a few freshman studs make a diff this coming season.

Doesn’t mean anything for on the field success but I ran into Trey Knox last night. Really nice and respectful kid!

He fits the part. Fr. 6' 5" WR

Yes, appears to be a field ready FR.

Certain positions are easier for a FR to excel, WR is one of them.

I've been impressed with him in interviews during his recruitment, comes across as a intelligent, well spoken young man.

My wife and I were walking up to BWA, he and and a few other guys walked past us. I said to myself, “that’s Trey Knox”. He heard me and immediately turned around to come say hi. I told him welcome to The Hill and go get some recruits. He said “we workin’ on it”

We should have quite a few field ready freshman... especially at the receiver position. They all have food size. I went through the top 100 receivers on 247 and Burks and Knox were the 2 biggest receivers.

food size....I like it!

Seriously though - we will have much larger receivers in the coming season and I am looking forward to it. A qb needs to be able to throw it up and have receivers that will go up and get it. I think we will have that.

We will have an SEC type linebacker playing receiver for us the next few years.. let that sink in...a long with big 6'5 Knox to go with Nash and TQ who both seem to still be growing.... maybe just maybe the poor are starting to get a little richer.

I'm not sure we're poor... more like, we're that cousin who has a good job but threw his money away on boats and big tires for years, but has finally decided to start investing to watch his savings grow.

Who are the incoming freshman (including redshirts from last year) do you all think can come in and play? Any difference makers?

True, I should have probably put Stromberg/Robinson instead of just Stromberg because I think one of the two will definitely contribute at Center next season.  I personally think Stromberg has the most upside, but they are both probably equally as likely to contribute at the position.

I think Miller will unless they decide to try him at OL in the fall.  As for Williams, I think he and Soli are in the same boat.  I don't think either will be every down linemen. But they are both freak athletes who should have the potential to contribute significantly as pass rush specialists early, and both need to put on some weight.  Luckily, both enrolled early and are already on campus, so the strength and conditioning staff should be able to have them physically ready by the time the season starts.

I think Stromberg/Robinson will be 1-2 at Center and Clary will move back to Guard. Miller will be a 3tech like Armon Watts last year I don't think he will move to OL.

True... conversely, other positions (OL/QB/LB) generally require development, either physically or mentally to step in early.   Big reason why the JUCO OL guys were so critical to get.  Also why (BIG IF) a grad transfer QB has been such a hot topic.

Back in the good ol' days when I had seats in the indoor SEZ, Matt Jones came in and made Mississippi State look like they had tar on their feet.  I'd never seen anything like it.  He took a broken play and ran right towards me, stopping and starting, running and juking, and basically won the game with that one play.

He had other plays, but I think that one improv was when MSU said "****!....who IS this kid?"

Guys even tho this is a very good class these kids will be on the field with juniors and seniors that are just as athletic but way more experienced. It is simply not fair to these kids to place those kinds of expectations on them.

Times have changed. FR are coming in game ready more than at any time in the past. Most schools are winning with them. We can too

These kids can handle raised expectations...we should have raised the bar years ago

Disagree...Agree that if they show up in Jan....disagree if they don't.  About 8 weeks to get ready to go on the road to Ole Miss....no way they will be ready IMHO.

Look what Mike Woods did as a much lower rated WR with a green QB and an Oline that couldn't protect long enough to throw the med to long routes.  I think these Freshman will do quite well.

Good point, Woods showed some flashes last year and didn't have much help.  I hope he can really show out next year with the (expected) improvement at QB/OL. Think he'll be one of the leaders at WR and can help out this talented recruiting class

Forget the pressure on the kids.  We wouldn't be Hog fans if we didn't set ourselves up for disappointment.  By the time this thread is finished we will have 10 all SEC players picked out.
