I drove through Fianna Hills yesterday, and saw the first par 3 on the back 9 (#12, I think it was).  It had been mowed or brush-hogged around the tee box and other areas.  The greens are totally gone, though.  No water on them during the summer.

It's going to make getting it up running again that much more expensive, and I've not heard a word about anyone looking at it.  My recollection is the restaurant also closed, so there is no "club" there.

My understanding is everything is shut down and there is no potential buyer on the horizon.  I was told they're only mowing what you see as you drive up the hill and letting everything else go.

I was in Fianna Flats, as we call it.   On 28th Street where it intersects with Brooken Hill.

It is possible, of course, that someone that lives in the area is keeping it knocked down.

They need to just turn the Fianna Golf course into a biking and hiking trail. Use the existing cart paths where you can. Make it a park. It would be used much more often that way.

Fort Smith doesnt need a golf course in Fianna. Yoi have Hardscrabble for the country club elites. For those who just want to play a good round, Eagle Crest is great and Ben Geren is much improved.

I haven't played Eagle Crest since fall of 2017 (I think).

But every time I drive past there, I glance up from I-40 and it seems there's nobody there.
Surely they can't be doing all that great?

No, not good at all.  It's not the same course that it was 10-15 years ago.

Glenwood CC was built in 1994 by a local banker named Irvin Bainum.
He used to live on Hwy 70 five miles east of town and had several private par-3 holes.
So he decided to just bankroll a golf course himself. It was his pet project and contribution to the community.
It was a great public golf course in such a small town. Haven't played it in several years, but I believe at that time it had just changed hands then.
Now that he's long gone it will be interesting to see if the place survives forever.

Yeah, I just stumbled across that as my youngest plays his state championship their in a week. I really donít know much about it, I guess Iíll get a look in a week.

It's a quality course.
Has some nice scenic holes. Rolling terrain in the Ouachita Mtns.
Used to be an old dairy farm.

Assuming the old hole configuration:
Holes 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 18 play tight in the trees.
Holes 4,5,6,7,11,12,13,14 are much more open.
#15 is the 'signature hole, a par-3 over water.
The 'gettable' holes to me are 4,6,7,11,12,13
Hardest holes are 3, 8, 10, 16, 18
Easiest holes would be 4,6,17

Yeah, our pro said that it started out tight, but our kids are use to tight at JCC, it doesnít mean we play it well, but weíre use to it. I think they are going down Thursday to play it, before going back on Sunday for another practice round. I liked how it was in the past, the state championship was over two days instead of one.

JCC = Jonesboro CC?
If so, that's a lot of driving back and forth to practice.

Also, when is this event?
I may be playing Glenwood soon and don't want to be there when there is an event going on that will consume the course.

The kids donít mind, they get out of school, lol. The official practice round is this Sunday, with the tournament on Monday the 7th.

Got a message yesterday that Eagle Crest was closing.

The property is owned by a former Alma rich guy (still rich) that relocated to another state.  Some family has been trying to run it for a few years.  The course is in terrible shape.  Greens that are nothing but sand.  Bunkers with no sand, just weeds. The great zoysia fairways are all but gone.  Really sad.  It was a course to be proud of not that many years ago.

That is very sad. I liked that course. I thought the reason Fianna closed was that it had lost a lot of members who were playing over at Eagle Crest. Is golf just not being played much in FS other than Hardscrabble? (Not that I've seen a lot of people at Hardscrabble when I've played there on a couple of weekdays.)

Dang, that's terrible news.
This course is even on the Natural State Golf Trail.
I always loved playing there, it's one of those courses that I always considered 'fun' to play.
Not saying it wasn't a good course, but I just enjoyed playing there.
And some views to die for on top of the mountain.

It's a sign of the times. Golf is really under pressure right now.
I guess the President is right. Golf is an 'aspirational' sport. Guys with money and time are the clientele, not the average guy.
There isn't enough business to keep places open, it costs too much to put the product out there that people expect.

It also explains my lyin' eyes weren't lying. Last few times driving past there it sure looked awfully empty up there.

Is it #9 or 18 that has the short stonewall a few yards behind the green? The one time I played Glenwood you could actually overshoot the green and as long as your shot was on the ground you might get a decent rebound back onto the green.

That is what I know as #9.

They've flip-flopped the nines at least once over the years, though.

But it's #9 by the original routing.

#10 starts at the top of the hill away from the clubhouse. Tough, tight par-4.

Christina Lecuyer is involved with this in some way.
"Big Break" gal, lives in Conway. Went to UCA, but is from Canada.

She does some marketing, commercials, publicity, etc for the golf trail.

At one point after that show she was a teaching pro at the North Shore driving range. Don't think she stayed out there too long though.

I'm surprised any public course can make it these days. Paradise Valley has roughly 350 members (perhaps a bit more) but at roughly $200 per member that's $70,000 a month coming in even during the winter months.   I don't see anyway in the world these public courses can generate that kind of income Not sure how Stonebridge makes it but they appear to.

So I called Eagle Crest directly yesterday and asked if they were closing.
The guy said no.
Then I mentioned I had heard a rumor of the closing, but he said that he had heard the same rumors himself, but no.
He then mentioned the hours in the winter would be changing, but that's it.

So, either 1)the course is not closing 2)they're being coy about the shutdown of the place and timing and not saying anything now 3)the guy on the phone didn't know either way

Regarding Eagle Crest, I also talked to someone as I'm a member there. Was told the same. It's not closing, however it is up for sale. Long term who knows.

The condition of the course is not as bad as the original post made out. Fairways are still fantastic. Most greens are good with a few having some spots that are healing from August temps. Yes some of the bunkers are in bad shape, I don't hit into them so no bother. Still fun to play and I highly recommend it.

Now if it were to close I have no idea what I would do. Ben Geren more than likely. I'm sure Hardscrabble can be more selective with new members due to all of the closings. Depressing to think about.
