Three good players and a draft pick in exchange for a one-season rental. Nice.

Goldy is a great guy. Everyone loves him here in the Desert. He will fall in love with StL. Trading for this established 1st base star reminds me of Orlando Cepeda and Jack Clark deals. Cards both times when to next 2 out 3 world series.

Great trade for the Cards.

One more bat.

It puts the Cardinals in a position to actually compete for the division this year though. And you have to assume they feel pretty good about re-signing him or they wouldnít have done it.

This lineup is gonna be sick. A bat and a GG fielder at 1B will transform this team in a way that no other individual move could have.

Love it. Especially if we can get him inked long term past 2019. No way Harper is worth 30+ million a year. I would rather spend that money on pitching

Looks like a nice trade. Dealt from depth and got a bat that kills NL Central pitching. Weaver had fallen completely out of favor, Kelly was blocked, and the other guy (Young?) was somebody the Cardinals arenít likely to miss. Iím not sure about locking Goldy up though. 31 years old is a bit old to go over 4 years for my tastes. He seems like a good guy and extremely solid player though.

I expect another trade. Gyorko seems like a target for trade and I still doubt Fowler as the answer in RF. If Jose Martinez could catch the ball.....

I just donít see the Cardinals making another ďsplashĒ move this offseason. They might try to lock Ozuna up early next season if theyíre confident in his health. Harper just isnít a signing they typically make. Harper reeks of regrettable contract, but the first 5 years would probably be awesome. Maybe they surprise me.

Bullpen still a major concern, but there are good options there. A full season of Hicks, Hudson, and maybe Helsley out there should help keep it steady. I would like a lefty other than Cecil. Depending on that guy is a foolís errand.

Right now it's the best line-up in the NL. I go:

Bader
Wong
Carpenter
Goldy
Ozuna
Molina
O'Neill
Dejong

Gyorko is traded for a LH pen arm
...and Fowler spells O'Neill in RF.

...Martinez may also be traded now.

The infield just got way better, too, defensively.

If I was gonna put somebody on the block, it might be Wong (if anyone wants that contract). I wouldnít mind dealing Fowler either, but nobody will want his contract. Who knows, maybe he gets things together.

I think we have a great lineup now though. The only question mark being the fact that there are only 2 lefties in the projected starting order.

Iím keeping Wong, heís relatively cheap and gives you gold glove caliber defense. Thatís a value add that, to me, one of the worst defenses in MLB doesnít need to lose. I think the Cardinals are sold on Wongís defense, I know I am. Itís like Molina in 2006, anything offensive you get from him is like finding a $20 bill on the the ground. Itís nice, but not something you need to depend on to be able to eat.

Gyorko is a good player, but whatís his fit now? He wonít be at 3b, Jose Martinez and Tyler Oíneill are your RH thump on the bench, and Yairo Munoz is a cheap RH utility option with offensive upside. Maybe they can afford to keep Gyorko, I donít know. But I think they need to flip him for a LH utility bat or a LH reliever. If they can that is.

Goldschmidt really does seem like a good deal. The lineup got deeper, the defense probably got better (Carpenter at 3b concerns me), and redundant/blocked pieces got moved out. However, I hope theyíre not done.

Hereís my way too early opening day lineup prediction:

1. Carpenter 3B
2. Fowler RF
3. Goldschmidt 1B
4. Ozuna LF
5. Dejong SS
6. Molina C
7. Bader CF
8. Wong 2B
9. Mikolas P

I hope Fowler rebounds. They need his switch hitting and good OBP to be in the lineup. I think he will, he has a good track record. Just a rough year last year, I hope anyway.

I see some of yíall have Bader in the upper part of the lineup. Iím just not there with him. Too many strikeouts. Like his speed though.

I like Goldy in the 2 hole as well. There's been a pretty big change of thinking across baseball the past few years where most are starting to put that best bat in the 2 hole instead of the traditional spot of the 3 hole.

Many teams have been putting their ďbestĒ hitter in the second spot in the order. I just donít understand it. Iíve read about it, studied on it even, but I just donít see the benefit. Seems like itís a little bit of egghead number crunching, not that thereís anything wrong with that. The idea Iíve seen behind it is put your top two hitters at the top so they get more at bats, and your best in the 2 hole with the idea that heíll get more RBI opportunity, and less chance of coming up with the bases empty after a double play as is wont to occur in the #3 spot. Those are the theories Iíve seen that play into it. Iím sure thereís more, Iím far from an expert on it.

I like the sound of the Carpenter, Fowler, Goldschmidt, Ozuna setup better. Of course that depends on Fowler returning to his OBP prowess of yore. I donít believe in Dejongís bat in the 3 hole, but admittedly I donít know why I believe in Fowler more than Dejong at this point. DeJong just seems more like a 5 hole hitter to me, but what the hell do I know?

All in all, I think itís a wash as long as Carpenter leads off and Goldschmidt is in the 2 or 3. Either way it will be fun to see a player as good as Goldschmidt manning 1B and any spot in the order for the Cardinals. He makes the lineup deeper and the defense better.

I still would like to see the Cardinals add (a solid starter) and reduce (Cecil) some pitching, but Iíd be okay with what they have right now otherwise. Iím really curious to watch Wainwright this spring. What does he bring? Was that LA start last September a fluke or was it the real deal?

Get them more at bats .. I originally suggested him in the 2 hole I would be fine with him in the 3 as well carp is the one I feel strongly should stay at leadoff .. he has shown time and time that is where he hits best .. just no need in jacking with it .

What's the idea behind it?

On average, each spot you move up in the order gives you 15-20 more at bats per year. So more plate appearances is the biggest factor. After the first inning, the batting order doesn't really matter.

I coach high school baseball and I've made this change to my lineup the past few seasons and it's resulted in more runs for us. I also don't bat my worst hitters 8 or 9. I usually put my weakest bats in the 6-7 holes. I like having a guy with a high OBP in the 9 hole to get on in front of the top of my order for the rest of the game.

I also think it leads to more good first innings. My best hitter is coming up with either no outs or 1 out. We steal bases at such a high percentage in high school that it's a better play to try for a steal than a sac bunt in most cases. So if I can get my leadoff guy on, steal him, and have my best batter at the plate with a runner in scoring position and no outs then I like my chances of that leadoff guy scoring or at least getting moved over to 3rd base for my 3 and 4 hole hitters to knock in.

At the major league level it's usually about at bats, but for me it's the at bats plus the other stuff I've mentioned. Also, if it's a team we've never played before, they usually give us better pitches to hit in the 2 hole than they do the 3 hole since they always assume my 3 hole is my best hitter. Again, that wouldn't matter in the bigs because they know everything about everybody.
