Is that why we couldn't run the ball against an inferior opponent?

No. That would be bc our offensive line is not good

Good grief.  One would think with the winky face everyone would have realized the sarcasm.

The point I was making is related to all the years we heard that as a realistic excuse during the first game of the CBB tenure each year.

We have some work to do but I think based on CCM’s post game comments it is clear he is aware of that fact.

We used very little motion compared to past SMU team. The people chiming in with sarcasm in this don’t know his track record. It was very vanilla and we scored 55 points with no turnovers

It was weird how much better than pass protection was than the run blocking. Like we were a run-and-shoot team or something.

It ways vanilla but that is because they couldnt get more installed.  The intentionally vanilla claim of the past few years has indicated our vanilla start was so other teams wouldn’t see our play package too early.

I’m aware of that and I’m saying we aren’t running a lot of plays that we have obviously. You’ll see a lot of different stuff that we haven’t seen when we go to auburn

Correct. There are some misdirection plays in CCM's arsenal we haven't seen yet. I figure the team will work on some of these the next couple of weeks to diversify our offensive repertoire as we enter SEC play.

It was clearly the game plan to limit the offense to some of the more basic things planned.  We saw very little of the formation “restructuring”, backfield counters, backs crossing full speed with motion handoffs/fakes...

..nonetheless, we should have been able to blow their team off the line of scrimmage at will.

Good thing is.. a full game at full speed is now on film, thus giving the coaches and players a true visual of why they had poor results and can do things to fix.

I would like to see some of the two back, motion offense.  That could help some of our run game blocking woes.

Re-watching the game it looks to me like our splits are tight. The line was still getting a 3 yard push in most cases but the backs were dancing behind them and not hitting the hole hard. I don't think the running woes are all on the line.

I think that E. Illinois, with 7 within 10 yds of the LOS, did a really good scheming on defense to take away the backside lanes and I think that is what our RB's were looking for that made them dance around a bit. That said, in the RPO, there were times that we had a running lane and the QB pulled the ball and passed instead and probably because we were getting a lot of man-to-man coverage downfield. As I said another time today, they were daring us to throw and we did so effectively. I mean, we completed 72.4% of our passes yesterday.

IIRC all of our running plays were dives and a few times QB carries. there were no misdirection plays, none of the plays we saw SMU running, which makes me think we kept A LOT in our pocket. Maybe we would have run them if we needed them, but we didn't.

Why show all we might have if we don't need to.

That makes sense about the backside lanes. Also, I agree about the passing. While we looked out of sink on some drives yesterday, we still moved the ball effectively and took what was given.

Agree, but that certainly doesn't explain zero run blocking.  Maybe that doesn't get covered until page 3.

I think it is quite simply more of a case that we just took what they gave us rather than trying to force our will of a running game on their defense. Truly, this was what we have all wanted to see in an offense, "take what they give you instead of blindly trying to impose our will on another team".

Now that said, there has to be more push up front from the O-Line. 80 total yards rushing with your true RB's having just 28, 17, 12 and 3 yards rushing? That dog won't hunt as we go through this season whether other teams load the box or not.

I don't see how taking what they give us has anything to do with zero run blocking.  They wouldn't let us run block, but they let us pass block?

I would never say we were sandbagging today, but there weren't a lot of cross blocks and traps today, from what I remember anyway. We should be better next week, and the next, etc. I am not disagreeing with the idea that we are average, but I think these guys will improve as the season goes on. After all, we are not going to win 10 games so let's remember that.

I am SO in hopes that what we saw yesterday was an "intentionally vanilla" scheme - and not an indication of the play book learning curve limitations that our players are currently being hindered by.

That's not a complaint.  It's just a concern.

I'd say it was more a question of talent, especially the OL, that is going to limit this team offensively all season.

Definitely went at least somewhat vanilla. No creativity to the offense, especially in the run game. Don't remember seeing many counters, fly sweeps, reverses, because we simply didn't need them. Doesn't pass the smell test.

rushing for what they did against a SEVERELY over matched opponent does not pass the smell test either.

oh I never disputed that. but a little misdirection can go a long ways towards making positive yardage. if the defense knows you're pounding it up the middle, they are just gonna load the box and you run right into them every time, which is basically what happened. Hard for 5 to block 8. but should we have been able to pound it right at them better than we did? yes.
