Report: Butch Jones has interest in the Maryland job

Quote
Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones has interest in the head coach opening at Maryland, TerrapinSportsReport.com reported Thursday, citing a source close to Jones.

Matt Canada is serving as Maryland's interim coach. Maryland fired DJ Durkin on Wednesday, one day after reinstating him. Durkin had been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 11.

A Maryland player, Jordan McNair, died on June 13 after suffering heatstroke during a May workout. Durkin hasn't coached this season while he and his program underwent investigation.

Tennessee fired Jones last November amid his fifth season as its coach. He had a 34-27 record with the Vols. Jones is now an offensive analyst at Alabama.

Jones getting another head coaching job would be good news for Tennessee, as it would help mitigate the buyout he's owed. Tennessee owed Jones an $8.26 million buyout when it fired him. The buyout is due in monthly installments throughout the duration of his contract, which was set to expire on Feb. 28, 2021. His Tennessee contract required him to try to find a new job to mitigate the buyout.

His $35,000 salary at Alabama is...

No word on whether Coach Jones would stay with Bama through the CFP.

I know people have speculated about him since he was moved off field at Auburn. But he will be announced later today as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt.

Todd Grantham staying with Florida in part because Gators extended him with a raise in January to $1.8 mill making him 5th highest paid DC in the country. They did that before the Bengals stuff came up. UF very pre-emptive with deal, knowing teams would come calling.

Reports: Auburn assistant Greg Brown leaving for Purdue

Quote
After spending the last two seasons on Gus Malzahn’s staff, Brown will take over as Purdue’s cornerbacks coach, according to multiple reports from Yahoo Sports and 247...

Brown will replace Derrick Jackson on Jeff Brohm’s staff after Jackson was recently named the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois.

Brown is the third assistant to depart Malzahn’s staff since the end of the regular season and the second to do so voluntarily. Former offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey left in early December to briefly become the offensive coordinator at Kansas before being named head coach at Troy last month, while former running backs coach Tim Horton was demoted before leaving the program and then landing[on his feet] at Vanderbilt this week.

Details on Jim Chaney’s latest contract, buyout with UGA before leaving for Tennessee
https://www.onlineathens.com/sports/20190228/details-on-jim-chaneys-latest-contract-buyout-with-uga-before-departure

Quote
FOIA: Chaney was under contract for two more seasons with Georgia when he left in January to become Tennessee’s offensive coordinator...

Georgia had never revealed previously a new deal was in place for Chaney who was thought to be nearing the end of the three year contract he signed when he was hired as Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator.

His total compensation of $950,000 did not change in the Georgia contract that ran through June 30, 2021. The contract took effect on Feb. 14, 2018 “regardless of the date of execution.”

Chaney will be paid $1.5 million at Tennessee for the 2019 season, $1.6 million in 2020 and $1.7 million in 2021, according to the memorandum of understanding...

Chaney’s buyout for leaving Georgia was 20 percent of remaining unpaid base salary ($390,000 a year) and supplemental compensation ($560,000 a year). He had 60 days to make a lump sum payment after the termination date. Tennessee agreed to pay up to $500,000 of Chaney’s buyout.

He would not have had to pay the buyout if he left for an NCAA or NFL head coaching position.

Report that David Beaty who was replaced by Les Miles is planning to sue KU.

The coach, who has a knowledge of the times, is using the sound bite/accusation: “They hoped to find a dead [professional woman]” to avoid a payout.
