Friday Practice Notes
« on: August 09, 2014, 06:29:05 am »

Arkansas practiced in full pads for the first time Friday. The practice was closed, but defensive coaches and players spoke to reporters following practice. Below are some excerpts from what they said.

Good report. Thanks.

A few names we haven't heard from in a while. Encouraging.

Me too. Especially when Collins makes comment that the wr's are getting off the ball in press coverage.  175 lbs isn't near big enough to play press in the sec.

Size matters. But press coverage depends more on quickness, agility, and speed.

"Redshirt freshman defensive end Tevin Beanum said he will start the fall semester with 56 credit hours, only 4 hours shy of junior standing at the university. Beanum, who scored a 30 on his ACT, is on track to graduate with his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in three years and said he could be working on a Master's degree in physical therapy by his redshirt junior season."

Yea most people didn't project him to start in the thread about our defensive starters.  He did start for us at the end of last year though.

Liking the sound of that! Lots of physicality and attitude.

yea He got killed by fans for the last TD vs LSU but anybody who knows football knows  that was not his fault....That was on the Saftey (who seem to always screw up) who I will not name but is no longer on the team ......(yes it still bothers me)

Nice to see us with more depth in the secondary to go with our improved LB speed and DL play. Defense is coming along fine. Beanum's gonna be a player. Go Hogs.

No doubt those attributes are important for a corner. However press coverage only works if the db has upper body strength to jam the wr at the los. The ability to disrupt the offenses timing is what makes or breaks this coverage.  i.e. Knocking a wr on his azz at the snap would give a cb %100 grade for technique on the play.  That takes upper body size and strength.

Right.  You have to keep in mind that when you play press coverage, not only does that allow the CB to knock the WR off his route and mess up the timing, giving the D-line that extra second to get to the QB,

it also gives the WR an opportunity to hit the CB and push him off the coverage and make an easy catch.

Technique is critical, getting the right angle at contact, but upper body strength is important in order to help keep your balance and help the WR to lose his.

It will be interesting.  I'm so glad we are at least trying it.

Another thing that will be interesting will be to see how OSUe plays their CBs, then we will know if that is Ash's preferred method of defense for his secondary or he had us playing soft all year because he didn't think we had the talent to play press coverage.

You can't draw a conclusion from OSU and Ash's play.  He is not the only thing making decisions on the Defensive side of the ball.

Collins may be showing flashes of better recovery speed or closing speed, he may have a better nose for the ball, may be tackling better, the list could go on as to why he is currently listed over the other options.
