The best has yet to come for Austin Wiley in an Auburn uniform, but with only eight regular-season games plus the postseason remaining, the clock is ticking for the Tigers and their talented big man https://trib.al/TPsKIUi

Quote
Wiley, a former four-star prospect and top-35 player nationally out of high school, arrived at Auburn with much fanfare in December 2016. Viewed as an NBA-caliber talent, Wiley’s career has never really taken off as expected — partly due to a string of foot and lower-leg injuries, partly due to a season-long NCAA suspension.

As Auburn embarks on the final month of the regular season, though, Bruce Pearl and his players are hopeful that Wiley’s final form will be realized at a critical time for the team as it eyes its second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

“I still think it could happen this year,” Pearl said. “I’m way more frustrated for him than I am for us, because he has gone through a lot. But his attitude has been really good. He’s staying ready. And yes, there is a chance that this year we could see the best he’s got. But we haven’t been able to right now, and I know that’s frustrating for him, but our job is to continue to stay in range and keep winning enough without him so that when he does come back and make us a better team, we’re in position to make a strong run in March, but that’s to be determined.”

As a midyear enrollee during the 2016-17 season, Wiley averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds across 23 games, including 22 starts, while playing 18 minutes per contest. He followed that up with a strong showing at the FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging a double-double — 10.3 points and 10.9 rebounds — for Team USA, and then after sitting out Auburn’s tour of Italy later that summer due to injury, Wiley was sidelined the entire 2017-18 season due to his involvement in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption that swept the sport in September 2017.

Kentucky's first in-state scholarship recruit in five years wins Kentucky Mr. Basketball

Quote
Pendleton County Coach Keaton Belcher expected blowback if Dontaie Allen’s won the 2019 Mr. Basketball race.

It didn’t take long for some on social media to skewer the outcome, which saw Allen — who played in only 13 games this season for the Wildcats after tearing his ACL and meniscus in December — defeat a crowded field of high-profile honorees, among them Louisville signee David Johnson (a star for Sweet Sixteen contender Trinity) and University Heights Academy star KyKy Tandy, who’s signed with Xavier and finished as a top-10 scorer in the state history.

Allen before his injury was averaging 42.9 points and 14.2 rebounds per game this season — leading the state in both categories — and Pendleton County had a 9-3 record before its game against Cooper on Dec. 22, during which Allen suffered his injury. He finished his career with 3,255 points, good for what would be 11th most in the KHSAA record book.

“I would say that his body of work for five seasons and us doing a pretty good job of shopping him around the state of Kentucky,” said Belcher when asked to respond to those who might question Allen’s selection. He noted that Pendleton County in Allen’s time there had played in 12 of the 16 regions.

Allen was grateful for Tuesday’s outcome. He said he wasn’t expecting to be named Mr. Basketball.

“It’s crazy, honestly,” Allen said. “I played 13 games and to think that I got it, that shows a lot.”

Bryce Brown is now the SEC’s 2nd most prolific 3-point shooter.

Trails another former Bruce Pearl gunner, Chris Lofton (431) from Mason County.

Brown passed Pat Bradley and then Shan Foster in that Kansas game.

#LSU's Naz Reid is 'a winner' and 'competitor,' and a big reason the Tigers are in Sweet 16
 https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/sports/lsu/article_a5cf39c8-500c-11e9-9dd0-e7a42bcc9fd7.html

Quote
To know what kind of job Naz Reid has done for the LSU basketball team this season, all you have to do is go back to one game in particular.

It was the Tennessee game Feb. 23, and Reid and the Tigers were trying to knock off the nation’s fifth-ranked team, which, five days earlier, had completed a four-week stint at the top of the Associated Press rankings.

Reid was suffering through the worst game of his college career on offense that day, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t play defense.

All-Southeastern Conference guard Admiral Schofield was torching LSU for 25 points, having hit 10 of 17 shots with 3:33 still to play in regulation. Reid went to assistant coach Greg Heiar during a timeout with a request.

Report: Devontae Shuler has declared for the 2019 NBA Draft:

Davis, Jr.

Quote
Per NCAA rules, this doesn’t mean Shuler is officially leaving. He may just want to go through the pre-draft process and get a grade.

Shuler averaged 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while starting 31 of 33 contests for the Rebels this year.
