Evans said his familiarity with the SEC will be a boon to Pelphrey, as well as his willingness to be candid with the young head coach. Too often, head coaches don’t get honest advice from their subordinates, Evans said.

“ I know the lay of the land, ” Evans said. “ I know this league. I know what it takes to be successful in this league. I want to add my experience. I want to tell John what I think he needs to hear. Often times young coaches will tell the head coach what they want to hear.

“ We want to be successful here. To be able to do that, I think there’s certain things we have to do. That’s the experience I’ve had over the course of the past 20-something years. ”
