Donovan was an average of 17-10 in two years at Marshall.

Self's average record before Kansas was 20-10 over ten seasons.

Gillispie's average record in his five seasons is 18-12.

Point well-made.  I wasn't sold on Gillispie anyway.  I hope Altman has the ultimate success of at least Self;  Donovan-level is now legendary.

And no, I don't think I could coach.  That is ridiculous.  I just don't see the fascination with Altman, and I have been aware of him for years.  I saw Arkansas under Nolan beat K-State at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, KS.  I lived in KC for 7 years and followed K-State and Creighton quite closely.  I'm a sports fan.  I think Altman has done a decent job at Creighton.  Do I think he was the best choice for Ark?

No, I think Frank didn't want to pay the bucks, didn't want to employ a search firm and give up his power, and wanted to get it done so he could go to the Masters.

But I hope Altman does well.  I'll cheer him on as he coaches the Hogs.

Sheesh, some of you can't take it when someone has a reasoned opinion different than your own.  How do you ever have an intelligent conversation?

Mike shassesskeieiiesskyiiiiieiieiieee at Duke.    The more I learn about coach Altman the more I get excited.  BG, BS, and JS would have michale boltted as soon as they got the bbd (bigger better deal).  I hope everyone supports Dana and gives him a chance.

The last 8 years he has averaged 23-9.  If you average the last 8 years of Hog BB we won't come close to that.
Bottom Line...  The hire has been made.  He will be judged on how he does here.  It does not matter if you are I like it or not, nor is it productive any more to worry about what might have been.  Unless of course it can get Nutt fired.

A good team at Creighton translates to about 20 wins. A good team at Arkansas translates  to about 24 win. He has had multiple good seasons at Creighton. A great year at Creighton is 24 or more wins. A great year at Arkansas is Elite Eight/Final Four. He's had a couple of those at Creighton. I disagree that nothing in his past predicts a promising future at Arkansas. BTW, the MVC has been pretty good the last couple of years.

No touneys, 2 NIT's, I'm sure Duke fans weren't too thrilled with the hire of this no-name Mike Krzyzewski guy either.

I am for him for three reasons:
1. He wants to be the Razorback coach unlike the others who did not.
2. He has proven that he can win consistently in a tough environment to recruit to.
3. He doesn't oversell and he is articulate, unlike the football coach.

So what exactly is the point of all this?  Are we supposed to get all up in arms, form a posse with torches and pitch forks and storm Bud Walton?  The guy hasn't coached a game at Arkansas, promises pressure defense and up-tempo offense, has convinced PB to stay and has a track record of winning games.  Thanks for the numbers but basketball isn't about numbers, it's about coaching, winning and forming kids into men and as far as everyone in the coaching ranks tends to believe we just hired a guy that can do all of that.  Anybody that is fan of the game, not of a particular university or team but of the game knows this guy can coach and has done it successfully in the one of the most highly regarded conferences in America, studying very carefully where he wanted to go and try to win a NC.  He thinks he can do it here and I can't wait to see him try.

Great post and right on +3 in my opinion.

  • I'm Un-Reconstructed. Sic semper tyrannis

Folks, we're being Shaefferized about Dana Altman.  His record is below, and nothing in it predicts excellence.  He'll be okay, 20-10 on average.  Is this what you expect and hope for?

Some highlights:

Average record at K-State:  21-10

Average record at Creighton:  20-11

Record against ACC:  1-3
Against Atlantic 10:  7-4
Against Big East:  3-7
Against Big 10:  3-3
Against Big 12:  36-49
Against Conf. USA:  6-11
Against Mid-American:  3-5
Against Missouri Valley:  153-85
Against SEC: 3-4
Against Sunbelt:  4-2
Against WAC:  6-4

Also, his up-tempo, pressing defense teams at Creighton have averaged 68 points a game over the last 4 years.   High-octane, huh?

  • ^^ You know who you are ^^

Look who Michigan hired, look who Iowa hired...I'd take Altman over either of those guys.

Who's Kentucky going to get if they can't get Donovan or Gillispie?

Everyone points out his experience at K-State but they forget that he was 30 years old when he was hired and it was his first D1 job as a HC.  Most HC's aren't considered to be in their prime until they reach 50 or so.  We're getting Altman at 48 and according to him, he wants to retire here and not use this as a jumping off point to the pros like Gillispie probably would have.

I'm not saying he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he's as good as we could have gotten at this time and I'm willing to see what he can do before I cast judgment on his ability as a coach.

  • Change is inevitable; growth is optional.

An idiot looks at past performance over the last 18 years?  Huh?

Granted, research is a relative term.  But some of you criticize because you think it takes too much time to find info, and now others think that just because someone gets info that's readily available, that's not good enough either.  Which is it?  Too much time spent on this or it was too easy to find?  You can't have it both ways.

Some people look at the data and see that Altman's done a decent job everywhere he's been.  They reason he'll have better resources at Arkansas (facility, fanbase, recruitiing budget, national image, etc.) and predict that he'll then have even more success.  That may be so.

Others look at the only objective, hard data available and see that Altman's done a decent job everywhere he's been, and predict that he will continue to do a decent, not great, job at Arkansas.  They reason that the better resources that are available at Arkansas must be balanced against the better coaches and teams that Altman's team will be facing on a regular basis.  Therefore, you can logically predict that Ark. will win about 2/3 of their games.  That may or may not be so.

Fans like to look at and debate these issues.  You're not a bad fan if you think Altman will do great; that's optimism.  I'm not a bad fan if I think that Altman will be less than we hope for and expect; that's pessimism about this hire.

Hey, I hope Altman does well.  I'm not throwing him under the bus.  Most great leaders actually draw motivation from doubters.  They think, "You don't think I can do it?  Well, watch and see."

Of course, Dana has far more important things to do than look at ramblings on a message board.  I'm sure he's as aware of the high expectations of Hog fans as he can be at this juncture.

But some of you need to get off your high horse claiming that people who have a different opinion than you about Coach Altman's upside must be idiots, bad fans, etc.  You have a different belief about what will happen, and there are reasons for your high expectations.  Good!

Lastly, the research line was meant to be humorous.  Have you not seen the Geico commercials?  Or do you get so upset when someone's opinion is different than yours that you can't accept reasoning, levity, or dialogue?

Go Hogs!  Good luck, Coach Altman!

According to Al Davis Jr. Arkansas can't get a better coach, which is why you are now faced having casper milquetoast at the helm.  He's average, mediocre, a lazy hire by JFB.  He will be middle of the pack at best in the SEC.  After watching his level of enthusiasm at his announcement I'd say he was too busy counting his cha ching to be bothered with school spirit.  Mediocrity is the word for the day here.

I don't know about everyone else, but I look for an intelligent person.

CalHog would rather throw insults than have a reasonable dialogue.  While you're looking for an intelligent person, don't bother using a mirror!

Sorry, just had to do that.  Your comeback was okay.

Who would you have hired? Just out of curiosity.

You don't like the hire, fine.  We got the point and heard from all of you loud and clear. Now let Dana do his job and the results will tell who's right.

Revolution.... So are you Sure? nothing in those stats predicts excellence.... Neither do any of your other posts... They do not predict excellence... So by your standards we should not listen to a damn thing that you say...

Excellent Idea Revy ol' boy...

Please leave this board.....how is 20 wins per season for 9 straight seasons mediocre.  Your hatred of JFB is clouding any and all judgement that you used to have....

LOL!   Hey, I'm no expert!  I actually thought Ark. basketball team would win the West this year and posted that at one point during the season.  I did pick Florida to win it all in my bracket, however.  How many can say that?  Uh, just about everyone.

And I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Actually, I thought the Geico Caveman thing was kind of clever . . . Legend in my own mind, I guess.

We will just have to wait and see.  DA's K-State gig scares me, and the fact Minnesota ended up with Tubby and we get Altman??   Now I know Tubby wouldn't have come here after leaving Kentucky....but couldn't we have done better?      Hope he does great, but kind of feel like his self description yesterday--boring. ::)

The Al Davis part was funny... What is the comment about Casper Milquetoast about?... If it is what I think it is... You are not destined to be a long term member of this board

First off, your original post is missing something - this last season (06-07) at Creighton.  Another 20-win season and NCAAT berth.

Take off the first 4 years at Creighton, and make those rebuilding years (though he did have 18 wins in the 4th season there), and look at his last 9 seasons.  20+ wins, all of them, and 7 NCAAT berths.  Only two wins in the NCAAT, but that's pretty much expected being a mid-major school.

Now, he's also got 18 years of HC experience, which beats out our last coach by 12 years, and Heath really only had 1 year exp when we hired him.

Bottom line is, he knows what he's doing, knows how to bring a program up to compete (MVC is starting to get national prominence), and he really wants to win.    Give him the resources at UofA to bring in top recruits and the sky is literally the limit.  He'll win here, I have no doubt at all.  the more I think about it, I'm actually kinda glad that BG didn't come here, because I think we have a better shot with DA.

  • Benedictine College Alum - Razorback Fan!

Of all those stats, here's the one I like the most

Missouri Valley 153- 85 or 64%

It's amazing how having a winning record in your conference makes you a national power. If Stan would have won at least 64% of his conference games last year, our record would have been 11-5 in the SEC instead of 7-9. Over his career, at least 64% in conference would be 52-28 instead of the 31-49 39% record he left with.

Dana Altman will win close games and match his MVC percentage in the SEC IMHO. I believe that means 23-24 wins a year and national prominence.

Go Dana and GO HOGS!!!

Dana Altman will be in the same category as John McDonnel and Dave Van Horn.

Do you really think of Kansas State as a basketball power? Did you think about the fact that Creighton is the #1 ranked University in the Midwest, and he was still able to recruit kids there who were able to win games on a regular basis? He hasn't had any hiccups along the way. He's had nine-straight 20-win seasons at a private school with higher academic standards than the rest of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Wichita State went to the Sweet 16 last year, but dropped to 17-14 this year, with pretty much all its players returning. Dana Altman hasn't had a season like that along the way. He's had years where it was thought they'd have a down year, and he's still managed to get to at least 20 wins.

Now, I know you're thinking 20 wins is no big deal. But Creighton isn't a big school like Arkansas that can load up its schedule with home games, so I'd say 20 wins at Creighton might be equal to 25 wins at Arkansas. Just give him a chance to get his system in place before you start tearing him down. If you really want Arkansas basketball to suffer, keep posting negative crap like this on here. I'm sure it really impresses recruits who might wander on here.

And, as far as you listing what Altman's record is against teams from BCS conferences, keep in mind that he's been at Creighton. Many of you had no idea where Creighton was before this week. A school like Creighton can't realistically be expected to fare too well against the big boys, but Altman has managed to win (or at least compete) against those teams on a regular basis.

Arkansas is not Creighton, my friend, so just sit back and see what he can do with the resources, facilities, name-recognition (of Arkansas), and budget. Nolan messed up the program, Heath kept it somewhat respectable, and it's Altman's job to take it to the next level. But if people like you don't give him a fair chance from the start, you'll never get to see what the man is capable of achieving.

While we're doing research, here's some more stats for ya.  See if you can guess who this coach is......

1977   Army   11-14
1978   Army   19-9
1979   Army   14-11
1980   Army   9-17

This guy went on to do pretty well at his next school.

well since coach k was hired at duke in 1980--i bet there have been close to 1000 coaches hired and fired that have records that look like coach k's did before duke---and NONE of them are coach K.

so much for the 'look at what this guy did' theory.
how about the 1000 others that continued their losing/mediocre ways--does anyone have the guts to say if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck---every once in a while you will find the goose that laid the golden egg---but not often.

also, who did coach K learn from?  who mentored him?

who does dana have as a mentor?  anyone 'special'?
