Omaha Beach scratched from Kentucky Derby

Derby favorite Omaha Beach scratched from race

http://www.espn.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/26650273/derby-favorite-omaha-beach-scratched-race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Omaha Beach, the favorite for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, has been scratched, his trainer Richard Mandella confirmed to Churchill Downs on Wednesday afternoon.

Mandella told reporters that Omaha Beach has an entrapped epiglottis. The epiglottis is a triangle-shaped piece of cartilage that is at the base of the airway above the soft palate. Because of its location, an entrapped epiglottis can cause difficulties breathing and would make it difficult to run a race without reversing the issue.

Has to be so disappointing for all connected with that horse. Hate it for the owner, trainer and jockey.

Turns out Mike picked the wrong horse. Any chance of an owner/trainer bumping their jockey and put him on their horse?

Haikal could be out as well which would open the 1 hold and get War of Will off the fence.  He gets off the fence then i will include him underneath.

Whew...I almost placed a future wager on OB. Think about all the money that went on OB in future wagers now nothing worth the paper they were printed on.

A life long friend of mine that has race horses ( Not Derby level) said when something like this happens it's not just a potential  money issue but it's a heartbreaking event.

I imagine this caused some tear filled eyes for sure.
Hopefully the horse has the procedure and recovers well.
Maybe he can run again in late summer or the fall.

Looks like a wet track. That changes things.

Omaha Beach will be just fine.  This is nothing more than a minor setback.  Maybe someone wins the KD and Preakness...and he comes back to spoil a Triple Crown in the Belmont?

Actually, Mandella said he might could make a race on Belmont card, it just won’t be Belmont Stakes

I did hear at first that he'd start training again in 3 weeks unless he has any setbacks...maybe they found more than what originally thought?

Mandella basically said OB wouldn’t return in a mile and a half race.

Smart man who cares more about his horse than any $ that could be made.  Can't forget about what a win in the Travers does for sire credentials.  Maybe he points him that direction and the Haskell?

Looks like Mike will be riding after all.

I would love to see  Max Sec and OB hook up in the Haskell and/or Travers.

I'd be shocked if Max Sec did not run in the Haskell, provided he is still healthy.

Servis trains for Dennis Drazin, who runs Monmouth Park. Even though Drazin doesn't own Max Sec, I've got to believe that the Haskell is already circled in on the horse's calendar.
