Let's talk Chris Beard
« on: March 24, 2019, 08:15:55 pm »

T Tech had not one an NCAA Tournament game since 2005 when he arrived last year.  They had one and done appearances in 2007 and 2016.

In his two years he goes in as a #3 seed:
2018 3 wins and Elite 8 loss to eventual Champion Nova
2019 2 wins and counting

They hadn't been a 3 seed in 20+ years.

I'm not saying he is coming here or would be interested.  I am saying that this is the kind of potential that is out there when the time comes to bite the bullet and make the change.   He's in Lubbock, Tx.  Not a particularly fabulous place for those that like to blame Fayetteville as a block to recruiting.

He did it at UALR.  He's doing again.

Yet, we make excuse after excuse like we have a them in a Rolodex.

The risk to change is always there but I will gladly give up our marginal success for a chance on new blood that can do what Beard has done at TT.

But mike has never had a losing season.

Another good one is we donít want to pay a competitive basketball coach.

Example 2:

VT was 9-22 the season before Buzz got there. A program with no tradition and in the ACC.

11-22
20-15 NIT
22-11 NCAAT
21-12 NCAAT
26-8 3 seed Sweet 16 and still playing.
Progression.

I personally would rather have Buzz than Beard or Sampson just because Tech and Houston both seem to rely super heavily on the 3. If we won with them I wouldn't complain, but stylistically that is not what I would prefer to watch. I also hate watching Auburn for the same reason.

He is doing very well there but Tubby left him pretty well stocked with talent. Besides, no way would he leave Tech to come here.

He is home lol.

He isn't coming to Arkansas. He stays at tech until a blue blood comes calling or the NBA. Heck he may even build something nice at tech and retire there.

Beard would be a lot better choice than Sampson or Buzz Williams.

Doubtful any of the 3 are coaching the Hogs in the future.

He's the best I've seen in years.  However, Wilson posted buyouts the other day and Beard's was listed at $12.3M.

I don't think he is coming but that most likely is his buyout if they were to fire him. Usually for the coach to leave for another job it's less. Possible that isn't the case and it is both ways.

I was going to allude to that a bit as well but supposedly we have a lot a talent as well.

But good coaches max things out and he has done that even before he was at UALR.  Mike has maybe maxed one season here.  Two tops.  Lots of times it's the guy after the guy that comes in to a good situation and makes it better.  Mike has given us a concrete foundation but i'm ready for the walls to go up on our success.

Obviously, he can coach.  There are others.

Tubby Smith rebuilt Texas Tech and then left. Beard built nothing but has done a great job as a head coach.

I always love the apples to oranges comparisons. What's even better is the lack of knowledge about the coaches. Chris Beard loves Tech. He cut his coaching teeth there.

He was a known commodity not some no name flavor of the week bum like we hire. He is at home. He won't leave except for a blue blood job. But please keep throwing his name out there.

So shouldn't the thread title be "let's find someone similar to Chris Beard" or "if tech can find a good coach we can too!" ;)

I don't know why everyone loves Chris Beard so much. Everyone knows is much easier to recruit at Texas Tech then it is at Arkansas. Plus he's a cheater.

Beard is a great coach. Great coaches donít grow on trees or everyone would have one. Itís easy to identify coaching changes that were successful. Itís also easy to identify coaching changes that are not. But we donít really want to think about that. Changing coaches doesnít guarantee success. Ask UCLA. Or Missouri. Or Indiana. Or Memphis. Or Arizona.

Itís not that simple. It has to be the right guy at the right time. After watching the coaching hires that UA has made since Broyles quit making them I have no confidence that they will get it right.

Every team in college hoops relies heavily on the 3-pt shot. Who cares about scheme or style or how many 3-pters you shoot. It's all about Ws and Ls and post-season tournament success. I'd happily support a Hog team that shoots a 100 3-pters a game, if it meant regular Top 25 finishes, conference championships, and making it to the Sweet 16 or better every couple of seasons.

So, is Chris Beard worth 4.5 or 5 million per year? Because he would be the name that seems to be on track to be the next big name. And if the program is going to get back to where people want it, Nolan's hay day, then it is going to require that we hire the next big name. And if you want to do that, then you are talking about paying someone in the 5 million ballpark. So, is Chris Beard a 5 million dollar man yet?

I guess some are just content with mediocrity+ success when it comes to their sports teams.  Personally, I find it interesting to see how aggressive others are when faced with choices like ours will be some day.

Many schools have a tree they can resource.  But we are on the last limb of our resource tree and will have to go in a new direction.  For me, that's exciting.  I find the excitement of what we can do a lot more entertaining than looking at much of the past 2 decades.

I'm not scared.  When the time occurs, I will support whomever we hire.  Beard is an example of what can go really right.  Can we get a guy like that?  Close to that?  We sure as hell can.

Don't be afraid.  I'll flip my quarter to try and win a dollar every time.

I know nothing about this dude except that he wins.  In other words, if his closet doesn't has any more skeletons in it than each of us do........hire him.  Pay him and get a proven winner.  Ties to his home state of Texas be darned, $$$ talks and the HC at Arkansas still is (unbelievably) a great job.  If he's the best out there, go get him.

Please, let's not screw this one up.

Open the checkbook. Look at how empty BWA is. Getting a good coach (preferred big time coach) will pay for itself in donations and butts in seats at half empty BWA
