Bill Self
« on: March 24, 2019, 08:24:06 am »

Am I crazy to think that Bill Selfís days of coaching at Kansas could be over? I know the success heís had there but something just seems off about that working relationship. Last nightís blowout certainly wonít help the cause either.

If thatís the case and Arkansas has a hint of a chance to hire him, you have to go for it. Even with Mike showing some more effort and fire these last two games, you canít pass up a chance at a coach like Self.

Don't roll your eyes. I was never one of those 10 years ago said we could get him.  However, I wonder if things have changed. The big 12 streak is over,  they just lost in the 2nd round, and i don't think they'll be any better next year. He or Kansas may be ready for a change.

Have to wait and see if he escapes the scandal.  I believe Kansas is involved in some way.  Along with Louisville, Arizona, NC State, and others?

The sideline reporter that interviewed him after the game asked him about the season being a disappointment and you could tell he wanted to scream.  I think heís a little frustrated with the expectations that he created.  I still donít think thereís any real chance but he does look like he could use a change.

I would love to see Self as our coach one day. One thing that wasnít mentioned about this season being so disappointing for Kansas was how many stars they lost for variying reasons throughout the season. Azubuike got hurt, Vick went home for family reasons, De Sousa ruled ineligible, and there were others. They played a ton of young players and the way he consistently brings top talent, theyíll be back.

Pretty strong rumors that Self is done at KU.  They are in eyeball deep in the scandals and at some point, time is up for almost any coach at one place.  See one...Nolan Richardson.

I don't think it is that far-fetched that we could get in the competition for Self.

I would not be surprised to see Self sit out for one year to see what happens with the scandals which might make it perfect timing for us.

Depends on which narrative you believe. 1ĖNCAA is weak and want upset the cash cow. 2- They are ready to push back on #1 and are gonna hammer all the coaches that are involved in FBI sting. I tend to lean towards #1. NCAA is at a pivotal moment.  FBI is handing them a gift to start cleaning up the sport.

Crazier things have happened in the world of college sports.  You create a monster, and as soon as you slip up, it eats you.  The whole scandal thing makes me a little reluctant though.  Guess we are just gonna have to wait and see what happens at this point anyway.

Wait...KU had young talent and still made the tournament? I thought that was impossible?

Exactly.  I could name five schools that would make more sense for Bill Self to go to rather than Arkansas.  Besides, how do we know Self isn't tired and ready to sit out a while?  Coaching does wear you down, particularly if you are on top of your game.

Bill Self isn't coming to Arkansas. Not a chance in heck. If he left Kansas, it is for the NBA. If he wanted to coach college, it would either be waiting for someone like Texas or USC to overpay or sitting out a year waiting for Oklahoma State to fire Boynton.

The only reason the streak ended is because KU lost 1 starter in January and another in late January.  And they still had a chance to share the title with 2 games to play.  With Azubuke and Vick playing, KU is Big 12 champs for the 15th straight year and a 1 seed.  All is okay in Lawrence until if the NCAA will finally really investigate KU.  Hopefully, the FBI wiretaps will get them on campus.

From just a coaching standpoint, Self is the best option for us.

The problem though is it looks like Self may have made his way into the John Calipari, Bruce Pearl, Will Wade, and Sean Miller area of illegality.

If he does leave Kansas (big if), I am not for sure if our Head Coach job is big enough for him anymore.  He has coached his way into elite status as far as basketball programs and Head Coach jobs are concerned.

Kansas had an abysmal season from a health perspective, and had a ton of talent-- but had many of the same problems we did.

They couldn't win enough with superior inexperienced talent.

Self's only job jeopardy arises from his heavy involvement in the shoe and recruitment scandals.  Its definitely not about winning and losing at Kansas for him, now.

I have many die hard KU friends who are ready for Self to be out. Who know if and when it will happen but think the fan base is gearing towards a change. You have to look at Self as a serious candidate if KU lets him go, which I don't think is very far fetched.

The only way Self leaves Kansas is if the NCAA posse is about to kick in his door. At that point I think he would be damaged goods and wouldn't be able to recruit at his next stop at near the level he has for the Jayhawks. Long story short, Self at a school other than Kansas and with scandal clouded around him would not be the same caliber of coach that we have seen throughout the years. Maybe if he went to the NBA and rehabbed his image for a few years.
