Iíd take Shaka. Texas isnít an easy place historically to win. Minimal tradition outside of Barnes.

Thatís not to say I donít consider Texas a place that canít win. Certainly they have a lot of advantages.

You would hire Shaka because TX is a place you think that has minimal tradition but hard to win at, yet Barnes took them to the Big Dance almost every single season he was there for almost 20 years.

It's laughable I'm considering how many more years I'd keep Mike to not hire a flash in the pan from 5 years ago. Really think about it when you want a coach only because he took *insert mid major* to a Sweet 16.

Yes, they rarely went prior to Barnes. Who was 15 of 16 and what he is doing at Tennessee is also amazing but Tennessee standard who has no tradition outside of Bruce Pearl

Shaka by the way has a final 4 and has missed 2 tournament in the past 9 seasons. Compared to a coach I know that has been 3 of his last 8

I'd rather have Buzz or a few others.  Smart would be 6th or so on my list.

Of course nothing is going to happen so it doesn't matter.

Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Shaka Smart let me tell you what I wanna do
Do you feel for me, the way I feel for you
Shaka Smart let me tell you what I wanna do
I wanna love you, wanna hug you, wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms, let me fill you with my charms, Shaka
'Cause you know that I'm the one to keep you warm, Shaka
I'll make you more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, Shaka baby, 'cause you make me wanna scream
Let me rock you, rock you
Baby, baby, when I look at you
I get a warm feeling inside
There's something about the things you do
That keeps me satisfied
I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
Makes me wanna sing
I feel for you
I think I love you

There's no place I'd rather be
I can't believe, can't believe it's true
The things that you do to me
I wouldn't lie to you, baby
I'm physically attracted to you
This feeling that I got for you, baby
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
I feel for you
I think I love you
I feel for you
I think I love you
Oh
Oh ooh
Yes sir, one more time
Say yeah

Shaka's probably out at Texas.

He's probably going to be a good rebound hire for a mid-major type program.   Won't likely get another crack at a major gig, no matter his success at his next job, though.  Texas is weird.   They have talent, they have influence, and they have the wherewithal to be a major success--- but their peak, with a regular stream of NBA players walking in and out the door, is a slightly better Missouri.   Rick Barnes is the Pinnacle of Texas basketball accomplishment.

Certainly you don't fire Anderson for Smart, who by all accounts has not lived up to expectations at Texas.  Smart hasn't been awful, but he has gotten a lot of mileage out of one final four run several years ago.

Yep, but millennials don't know history past 2010, they just think they know everything.  I didn't think the op was implying we should hire Shaka, which is definitely not a good thing to do.

Now, I did not know that.  Not sure that changes my opinion but good to know.  If we do make a new hire, it needs to be one that would inspire confidence in the fan base not mere hope.

7 of 10, went to the CBI his first year, but still good, 2 of 4 at Texas, 5 of 6 at VCU where all you gotta do is win your conference.

Abe had a couple of really good years in the late 70ís. But it was much tougher to get into the NCAA tourney at the time with 32 teams. Texas went on a big skid during the Bob Weitlich years.  But Penders took UT to the tournament in 8 of his 10 years.

And that prevents us from making a run at him why?  He coached in Texas for nearly 20 years.

The point is, if we are going to go after an ex-Texas coach, why don't we go after one that actually had a decent level of success there.

Shaka is a Nolan wannabe. Copied our style when he was at VCU. Rule changes have made it difficult/impossible to play that way anymore. Too many fouls called. Other team is in the bonus with 12min to play in the half/game.

Another point about  R Barnes , a very good coach , but how old is he ? In his late 60ís ? In a couple of years he may retire. If we did make a change, we need somebody, if successful, to be our coach for several years, not just 2,or 3.

Unfortunately, that's not very scary to a lot of programs anymore due to the NCAA's inability and ineptitude to make it a deterrent.

Smart's VCU success was long after the rules were changed.  From what I saw his was a hybrid of Nolan's pressure/running & a half court game.  I think he will get a chance to succeed but not at Texas.

IMHO a lot of what is wrong at Texas is political pressure/meddling from boosters etc.  The coaches aren't really getting to run the program the way they see fit.  It's what killed Strong's time there, and what ultimately lead to Mack Brown's dismissal.  Probably just as bad with basketball.  That said, I haven't seen enough from Smart to think he would have much more success here than Anderson.

.  Didnít Sweet Tom Penders win a lot when he was coached there back in late 80ís - 90ís , Abe Lemons won there in the 70ís.

Not really, no.  They had no NCAA tournament appearances between 1972 and 1990.  If we went 18 years without a tournament appearance, Bud Walton would be burned to the ground.    Texas, with all of its resources and recruiting, couldn't even crack the field back when it was easier to get in than now.

Mediocre coach at best.  Texas is not that hard to recruit to and win.  I definitely don't want him.  never cared for his style of play at VCU.  Did a good job there though.
