What exactly is the crime here?  Trying to hard to get your kid into a good school?  Who is the victim?

Tax evasion would be the crime.   The federal government doesn't give a whit about how dirty college athletics get, as long as they get their cut.

Half of the students listed on the women's cross country team at one university didn't even know they were on the cross-country team

LL paid USC $500K to put her daughters on the rowing team even though the daughters had never been on any boat smaller than a 50 foot schooner

A 35 gallon drum of Supertech motor oil delivered to the right man in Wabbaseka meant that I got accepted to Arkansas as a member of the university goat-roping team.
I never even went to practice once I was admitted. And some poor kid from Pettigrew never got a chance to shine because I took his spot. It’s unfair and still haunts me.

In my opinion it seems that there has to be some professors involved in this as well. I read that some of the children weren't making stellar grades in high school.

So the guy that was actually taking the ACT/SAT exams for these students (Riddell)was the director of college entrance exam preparation at IMG Academy. I can see this investigation getting much broader.

What a sell out any coach or AD involved in this is - selling out your athletic program to drop some money directly into their own pocket. That's a scholarship your team could use to get better.

At least other NCAA scandals normally involve coaches trying to win by buying the best athletes they can find - I find more respect in that. The coaches aren't getting rich to the detriment of their team.

To me the victim is the great high school volleyball player who DIDN'T get the athletic scholarship that went to the non-athlete - whose parents dropped 500K into the coach's bank account.

Or the rowing team that spends hours practicing trying to get better but they don't have the talent or the numbers to have a good program - but the coach is one rich SOB because he's selling his athletic scholarships to non-athletes.

Did these students actually get a scholarship? I know the ones going to Ivy League schools didn’t, they just used the lower “athlete” scale to get admitted.

I would assume those sports like any other sport have a set number of scholarships for athletes.

I could have misunderstood the articles I've read - but I was under the impression some this involved coaches selling scholarships.

It depends on the sport.   The main thing here, though, is tax evasion.  A rowing coach that makes $180K a year, who brings in one recruit every year at that $500K premium, will amass $5M in untaxed income in a decade.   A slight point of interest for the feds.

I don’t think it was about obtaining a scholarship.  These parents were spending six figures to get their kids accepted.

It’s quite strange.  Trust fund kids that either aren’t smart enough or don’t work hard enough or both are trying to get into schools where they’ll probably never use the degree.

Not selling scholarships, just a spot on the team.  The coach tells admissions they want a certain kid accepted without having to go through normal means.  The issue is the kids did not play the sport and were never going to play on the team.  It was a scheme to bypass normal admission standards.  The parents paid the coach a bribe to get them in.  They were not getting a scholarship, just the ability to get automatic acceptance into the school.

yeah i think there a multiple "strategies" at play here,  you got the "use relaxed athlete academic standard angle", you got pay someone to take and/or change your child's SAT and ACT scores so they get admitted.

I 'dont" think any schollies were lost but at these schools where the number of newly admitted students is very low and once filled you are SOL no matter how good a scores/grades you have.

They took some qualified kids spot in the school no doubt, maybe not an athlete or a scholarship.

From what I've read, those students/parents involved were simply seeking admission to the given institution that they otherwise were unqualified to get.  The loophole they found in some instances happen to be unfilled spots on athletic squads.  I don't think they received scholarships, only "athlete" status which ultimately allowed them to gain acceptance.  Buying influence like prostitution is not new.  Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

No way Kent Dorfman ever gets into Delta House without being a legacy pledge... power and influence baby.

It’s why one should always claim their illegal income on Schedule C, and zero deductions (because deductions for the production of illegal income are nondeductible).

The academically qualified kids whose place the cheaters took?
It (buying admittance) has been haooeningv forever, especially with alumni who give large donations. But, the sports angle is especially sickening. College athletics as a whole is sickening. Cheating of one form  or another seems to rule the day. I’m glad the schools got caught this time. Here’s hoping much more of the seedy side is exposed to  sunlight. No telling what other scandals might sprout.

Not very nice, but again, not a crime.

The crime is unreported, untaxed income for the bribe recipient, and the attendant legal problems for the ones who have paid them.

I think I heard today that this was also set up as the parents making payments to some sort of sham charitable organization, and they took deductions on their own tax returns that may be challenged.  Also, there may be fraud issues.

I'm still somewhat confused about the ability to get into a college as an "athletic recruit" - yet not taking space on the team

So every kid a college "recruits" yet doesn't give a scholarship to or takes space on a sports team - is eligible for admission under the athletic entrance requirements???  Doesn't even make sense.

Seems kind of steep to me for the crime.
Heck - you can murder, rape or sexually molest a child and get bond set a lot less than this.

well duh, I don't know.  How about some kid that was qualified to be admitted but was kicked to the curb so some kid of a rich person who wasn't qualified could get in.  If you want an example of how that works check out Donald Trumps academic, if you want to call it that, record.

The point of athletic department connection was to get in on the lower athletic admission requirements.  It wasn't about getting an athletic scholarship.

There are going to be lawsuits for years over this. Kids that benefitted in their careers will be sued. Kids who didn’t get into schools they applied for, even though they had better qualifications—they’ll sue for damages in the millions over the money they didn’t get paid in their careers. This will be epic.

Maybe, just maybe some of these Socialist/Communist Factories will take a real hit.

Won’t bother me a bit.

I like how it mentions that no SEC schools are involved.  Well of course not.  If we're going to cheat, by gosh we're going to get a real player out of the deal.

Do any SEC schools have crew or lacrosse teams?

There will be only unsuccessful lawsuits.  Proving that you have standing as someone who was denied a spot because of this, is virtually impossible.
