A look at why WR Griffin King is leaving Auburn, and what’s next: https://trib.al/Rsp0adw

--- Quote ---After Griffin King told Auburn’s coaching staff that he intended to transfer, head coach Gus Malzahn made a pitch to keep the would-be fifth-year senior, according to King’s mother, Debra King.

King originally walked on at Auburn, and was teammates with his brother, Gray King, for one season. Griffin eventually earned a scholarship before the 2017 season, and appeared in 16 games over the last two years as a receiver and on special teams.

Now, he has his Auburn degree in hand, and is looking for a school where he can use his final year of eligibility. He’ll be immediately eligible wherever he transfers.

“What Griffin is thinking is, you know, is he’s had a great experience at Auburn,” Debra said. “It’s awesome to be graduating on time, to have been part of such an incredible D1 program. It’s just been a great experience for him. But he still has a year of eligibility for football. So he’s just trying to explore his options.”

King got calls from three coaches on Wednesday after his name appeared in the NCAA’s new transfer portal. Debra wasn’t sure which schools called, but said she thought there was at least one Division I and one Division II school.

Debra, who works at the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, said her son is considering a future in dental school, and wherever he transfers to this year might be the first step in that process.

Mark Stoops comments on Gunnar Hoak entering transfer portal, leaves door open for QB to return

--- Quote ---“After much thought and consideration, I have decided to put my name in the NCAA transfer portal,” Hoak tweeted out on Tuesday. “With graduation coming up next week, I knew I had an important decision to make for my future including my football and academic careers.

“I would like to thank Coach Stoops and the UK staff for understanding that I need to see if there are any other options for me at this time in my career.”

Keep in mind, the program has already lost QB Danny Clark this offseason to transfer.

“Obviously, we’re a bit thin — with Danny moving on. We’re not uncommon to that. Unfortunately, it’s part of this situation now with college football and college athletics and we have to deal with it,” Stoops said. “Gunnar and I had a great talk yesterday, he is a great kid.

“As I told him, he really had a good spring. I told y’all that after one of the scrimmages, he really played well, as good as I’ve seen him play. You understand that (decision) because he is a competitor and he wants to play.”

While Stoops understands and maybe even appreciates Hoak’s decision on some level, he did note that the redshirt junior could return to the team...
