5 #Vandy signees who could make the biggest impact in 2016. http://tnne.ws/1SvshvS

--- Quote ---Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said he could see as many as half of his 20 signees play as true freshmen in 2016.

Some can fill a position of need. Some can add immediate depth. And a few might simply be an upgrade over returning players from last seasonís 4-8 Commodores squad.

Joejuan Williams (CB): The four-star cornerback from Father Ryan is Vanderbiltís highest-rated signee (maybe ever). He has very good size (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) and happens to play Masonís favorite position...

Recapping Vanderbilt's national signing day http://es.pn/1QbPFYy

--- Quote ---Mason had to secure some solid offensive playmakers in this third recruiting class. His defense made tremendous strides with him taking it over in 2015, but the offense was incredibly sluggish, thanks in large part to poor quarterback play. But Vandy didn't have many true receiving threats about whom defenses had to worry...

Mason was able to sign three receivers and a tight end, but it's tough to know right now if any can contribute immediately or if any can develop into top-flight players. Receiver Donaven Tennyson is a little on the smaller side, but he's a speedster. Still, he ranked as the No. 106 receiver by ESPN, which is the highest of Vandy's three receiver signees...

Biggest remaining question mark: With Vandy losing just two starting offensive linemen, including senior center Spencer Pulley, you'd think that the Dores might be OK here, but Vandy needed to bolster its depth with some help from this class.

Many of the underclassmen were choosing to come back.

Commodoresí only 2017 commit, three-star running back Lamont Atkins from Lake Braddock (Burke, Va.) High School, announced his de-commitment

--- Quote ---Atkins was rated as the No. 19 all-purpose back in the Class of 2017 and the No. 23 player in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
--- End quote ---

Three-star outside linebacker Colin Anderson committed to Vanderbilt

Number 70 ILB in our nation

--- Quote ---Anderson also carried offers from California and Tennessee.

He joins three-star quarterback Jacob Free as the only two committed members of the Commodoresí Class o' '17.
--- End quote ---

--- Quote ---Vanderbilt began the week with no commitments for the Class of 2017. After a few days of camps on campus, the Commodores now have three commitments.

The latest came Wednesday evening when two-star offensive lineman Grant Miller committed...

Miller grew up in Nashville where his father Fred Miller played for the Tennessee Titans. He later moved to Florida. Miller also had offers from Mississippi State, USC and Baylor among many other schools.

Miller is rated as the No. 162  offensive tackle in the country

On June 16, Vanderbilt was without a commitment for its 2017 recruiting class

Less than a week later, Derek Mason now has five players verbally committed to the Commodores

Mason landed a pair of three-star prospects on Thursday in offensive lineman Bryce Bailey and athlete McLane Mannix

--- Quote ---Bailey had offers from Syracuse, Louisville, Cincinnati, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa State, among others.

Mannix had FBS offers from Air Force and Army.

That's gonna be awkward when @AdamSparks is covering Adam Sparks

--- Quote ---Louisiana high school cornerback Adam Sparks committed to Vanderbilt via Twitter on Monday.

Sparks, a 6-foot, 175-pounder from Dutchtown High School in Geismar, La., is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals and Scout. He also had offers from MTSU, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe and SMU, among others.

On Monday, Sparks posted on Twitter: ďI appreciate all the love and support Iíve been shown throughout this process. After prayer and discussion with my family, Iíve decided to officially drop my anchor at Vanderbilt University!Ē

Sparks continues a recruiting flurry for the Commodores, who have landed nine commitments over the past 10 days for their 2017 signing class.

Vandy got a verbal from '17 3-star CB Randall Haynie from Ft. Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.

--- Quote ---Vanderbilt football has restructured its recruiting and player personnel department, which will be led by former Brentwood High quarterback Austen Everson.

The department will follow more of an NFL model of draft evaluation, with staffers dividing up short-term and long-term recruiting targets.

ďThis will be an innovative approach that is tailored to help us attract the very best to Vanderbilt," coach Derek Mason said in a news release. "We will better focus on all areas of the recruiting process ó early evaluation, fit, strong relationships and character ó to make sure we maximize all of our 85 scholarships."

Mason said the addition of Everson completed his vision for the Commodores' expansive approach to recruiting and roster evaluation.

ďAusten is a huge get for Vanderbilt University. He has roots in the area, knows the region extremely well, was a leader and winner on the field, and was very successful during his time with the University of Nebraska," Mason said.

Mason on Vandy recruiting -- "It's not about stars, it's about functionality in our system"

--- Quote ---Bailey McElwain, a fullback and linebacker from Hewitt-Trussville in suburban Birmingham who graduated this year, has flipped his commitment from Stanford to Vanderbilt and will be a Commodore this fall for Derek Mason

McElwain committed to Stanford last summer, but didn't sign with the Cardinal on National Signing Day. He later took an official visit to Vanderbilt in February.

McElwain will enroll at Vanderbilt this summer and be a Commodore this fall. McElwain was a three-star recruit in the class of 2016 and the nation's No. 3 fullback.

Josh Floyd is the Head Football Coach at Hewitt-Trussville

3-star linebacker Dimitri Moore, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound standout at Cedar Hill gives the Commodores their 12th verbal commitment for 2017. He is the highest-rated player in that group (maybe ever)

They're gonna be all right

--- Quote ---Vanderbilt football coach Derek Mason nixed rumors this week that heís leaving the Commodores for California. Instead, Mason is committed to filling out his 2017 recruiting class and filling several needs as National Signing Day rapidly approaches on Feb. 1.

The Cal job opened with the firing of Sonny Dykes. As reports popped about his interest, Mason put them to rest. [Seriously?]

Vanderbilt held tight at No. 64 this week, trailing No. 63 Colorado State in 247Sportsí composite ratings. That ranks the Commodores ahead of Bill Snyderís Kansas State program at No. 65 and No. 66 Houston led by Major Applewhite ó

Here are the top commits.

    Jacob Free, PRO
    Bryce Bailey, OT
    Dimitri Moore, OLB
    Randall Haynie, CB
    Dayo Odeyingbo, SDE

Mason lost just one commit to date, Adam Sparks. The cornerback dropped his commitment to Vanderbilt on Dec. 16, only to flip to Missouri 10 days later.

Georgetown (Texas) High School wide receiver Beau Corrales will visit Nashville on Jan. 20.

Geography of the Commodoresí 2017 recruiting class

Stone Edwards, a defensive end and 3-star, announced his commitment to the Commodores Sunday over Buffalo, The Citadel and, of course, Marshall

--- Quote ---Edwards, the No. 26 strong side defensive end in the nation, is the 15th member of Vanderbiltís 60th-ranked class of 2017. Heís behind only 3-star quarterback Jacob Free as the Commodores second highest rated recruit.

3-star '17 Kahului ILB Feleti Afemui gave a verbal to Vandy

Allan George, a 2017 cornerback out of Andalusia announced his commitment to Vanderbilt. George had been committed to Richmond Spiders.

--- Quote ---George is unranked.

Commodores now have 17 signees/commits for the 2017 class.

2017 class ranks 60th in the country.

--- Quote ---We can sit here and come up with plenty of reasons Vanderbiltís 2017 football recruiting class should not be considered a disappointment.

Evaluating a football class on signing day is like writing a game story off starting lineup introductions, for one thing. This is about what a kid does after he arrives on campus, not how many ďstarsĒ he is assigned by recruiting experts (5-star heart).

...Vanderbilt, specifically, is a 2017 disappointment.

Rankings arenít perfect, but they arenít irrelevant either. Itís possible the latest No. 1 class for Alabama will flop at every turn, and itís possible Vandyís class ó last in the SEC and No. 62 nationally per 247Sports.com composite rankings ó will churn out a string of All-Americans who deliver championships and evidence of Derek Masonís otherworldly evaluation skills.

I wouldnít bet on either. If this is the kind of class Mason brings in after a stirring November surge to get Vandy to a bowl game, chances are that future bowl games will require future November surges.

Commodores are not bringing in the players to get past that. Per some recruiting analysts I spoke with this week, people Iíve known for many years, the industry buzzword for Vanderbilt recruiting right now would be: Huh?

'18 Fort Lauderdale American Heritage .8429-rated WR Miles Jones gave a verbal to Vandy.

Listed at 5-9.

Daniel Dawkins, a 3-star center from Hightstown, N.J., announced his commitment to the Commodores on Thursday. Dawkins is rated as the No. 6 center for the Class of 2018 and the No. 12 overall player in New Jersey

4-star linebacker from Rockwall is a huge get for the Dores, and perhaps the biggest recruiting win of Masonís time in Nashville. He is ranked as the 178th-best player in the country and selected Vanderbilt over offers from Oklahoma and Texas, among others.

Tyler Steen is OFFICIALLY IN... Welcome to Commodore Nation!

--- Quote ---If Vanderbilt is in a bowl game a year from now, some of the new signees from Wednesday will have something to do with it.

Coming off a 5-7 season, the Commodores must replace three of their top wide receivers, two starting defensive linemen, two starting inside linebackers, four key defensive backs, a kicker and punter among other positions.

This class undoubtedly will have a hand in that rebuild, and coach Derek Mason knows it. Mason isnít blowing smoke about the relative talent in this class. With 17 signees so far, Vanderbilt's class is ranked 33rd nationally and 10th in the SEC
