Title: Ask Mike Irwin ........ Colorado State
Post by: Arkansas Hog in Dallas on September 08, 2019, 06:40:14 pm
Do you think he’s the guy based on what you’ve seen from the games and maybe some internal details you are privy to?

Houston Nutt became a pretty controversial figure towards the end of his tenure, but love him or hate him, he was a character.  From leading the band after a win against Vandy to taking a national phone interview from the toilet, you just never knew what was next.  Can you share a funny story you remember from the Nutt Era?

Petrino is easily the best coach we’ve had since joining the SEC (if results matter). I believe a big part of that was his extreme attention to detail (he’d have the floating shotgun snaps fixed after 1 game IMO), his intensity and his willingness to hold players and assistant coaches accountable. I also think his recruiting was underrated as evidenced by the number of his recruits who went on to the NFL. Can you tell us what you believe is different about Morris’s coaching so far from what you saw from Petrino?

If you had to choose only 3, what would you say are the biggest specific problems with this team and/or coaching staff?

Mike, all fanbases get testy when their team is losing and shows their frustration. Do you think negative comments on social media about players and/or coaches has an effect on recruiting?

Only kind of joking:

Let’s say at the end of the season Morris is “encouraged” to make changes to his offensive staff. What are the odds Bobby Petrino gets a shot at the OC position? His LRTD club appearance seemed to be a bit of a campaign.

If Morris goes 0-8 in the SEC for a second year in a row (first time ever at Ark was last year), would he lose his job or does he have a 3 or 4 year minimum, no matter what?

Mike, I’m asking you to be clairvoyant and tell me how worried we should be if such a scenario plays out: Morris is fired after year three and leaves behind three QBs — Jefferson, Jones, and Chandler. We can rightly assume Chandler would transfer, which would only leave Jefferson and Jones...that is, if Jefferson stays once Chandler arrives. Seems like a precarious situation to me; what say you?

Hi Mike
Is the fans questioning the coaches decisions and play calling unjustified? Please explain, yes or no. If yes, should Coach Morris take over the offense, and do what a lot of folks say he can do?

I think he likes the Hogs more than he likes Chad Morris.

Probably accounts for 99% of the members on here.

Hi Mike,

Assess the coaching staff -- are they experienced and talented enough to help Morris to get Arkansas competitive in the SEC?

Who is calling the offensive plays on game day?  Is it Craddock unilaterally? Is Chad just listening in with veto authority?  Is it Craddock to Chad then to the signal caller so that CM can influence each play selection? Is it Chad to Craddock to signal caller?  The question has been asked but lots of cloudy answers like: "it's a process" "there's collaboration" "we game plan as a staff."  Mike what do you think goes on in real time to call the plays?

Mike, you don’t seem to be the biggest fan of Chad Morris even though his recruiting has been off the charts, and he wasn’t left with much in the way of talent when he arrived here. Please tell us why you aren’t a fan of his. Thanks.

Maybe you can be more specific why YOU don't like Chad Morris, you certainly bash him quite a bit

I don’t know the man, honestly don’t care to.

He’s getting paid to coach football and ultimately win football games. I have only joked about him personally once and it was obviously a joke.

He is a coach with a losing overall record. He inherited a dumpster fire at SMU just like Arkansas. It took him three seasons to field a winning team at SMU, so we should expect at least three years, quite possibly up to five before he matches that record here given the competition.

He was more than likely the wrong hire at the wrong time. I just hope it doesn’t set us back too far once we decide to pull chock and hire someone else.

It is what it is.

Maybe he’ll surprise me, but he hasn’t surprised anyone since he’s been a head coach, so history is on my side. Again hopefully I’m wrong, but when he screws it up, I’m gonna call it like it happens.

So I guess to answer your question, I don’t hate him. He has done nothing impressive since he’s been here. Nothing.

Looking on the worst thing that will probably happen is that he will provide some stability in all the areas of the football program that have been previously neglected.

-Recruiting and retention will hopefully be as solid as they have been previously with gaps filled in the critical positions of need.

-The program will have repaired recruiting ties in Texas.

-Discipline will be brought to a higher level.

I have a feeling that Morris will end up being the Danny Ford of recent time. The next coach will walk in to a better situation.

I thought he got one game that year. Several people in the press was saying this last year was our first. I see on the arkansas razorback website that you're correct though.

Either way, 2013 was the first time since like 1943 or something crazy. It's extremely rare and shouldn't be rewarded. If we lose them all this year it'll be the first time ever back to back.

Starkel is obviously the QB of this team. Do you see a situation in the remaining 9 games where KJ Jefferson or Jones get any snaps before Hicks would?

Mike, Did you perceive the defense backslide a bit against the Rams or was it a case of that unit being on the field longer as we see in the time of possession disparity and the Hog offense and defense executing faster scoring drives along with three and outs?
