Got it, thanks.  Thought we would be hearing more about the replacement for Scott now that we're past signing day.

Should be announced Sunday or Monday, according to what Morris said at the AR high school coach's meeting yesterday.

I wonder if they give Caldwell the entire front four?

Can someone explain the difference between special teams quality control versus special teams coordinator? Does it have to do with level of emphasis or pay related or what?

Asking for a friend...... ;D

^I think the quality control title means off the field.  The coach is hands on and is there at every practice like any full time assistant coach.  Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

The story gives some insight. Sounds like they were pretty good on coverages/return yardage given up which would be great for us

Saw an extended profile of him and it looks like he attended school in Louisiana and coached at LA-Monroe.  So he has some LA ties that may help us recruit more boot hogs.

May be able to be on sideline during games. Butch Jones for example while not a position coach was an offensive analyst for Alabama this past season and was on the sidelines during games

Some are thinking this is John Scott's replacement, but everything I'm reading indicates that he is the replacement for Tanner Burns as special teams QC. There are reports Scott's replacement will be announced tomorrow or Monday, so I'm going with that..

Yeah, but not off campus. Burns was always mentioned by the specialists as being the guy they were in contact with.

Can QC coaches or analysts or whatever they're called these days actually go out and recruit?....or does that have to be one of the 10 on-field coaches?

Add:  Ooops ^^^^.........not off campus.  Does that include phone calls or other contact?  I don't know much about how these guys are allowed to operate.

I am encouraged that special teams are being discussed. The special teams here, for along time, have been very poor to the point of embarrassment. Just in the last 10 years, special teams has cost us several games.
There are a lot of areas we need improvement, but to me special teams is a key to turn this program around.

i am assuming that during practice times he can actually be an on-field coach for the purpose of coordinating special teams practice?  anyone have any idea about this?  not much use if he cant be a hands on type of coach for the ST

There are a lot of areas we need improvement, but to me special teams is a key to turn this program around.

Missed PAT vs Alabama in 14-13 loss 2014. Blocked FG vs MSU in 2015 resulting in a 1 or 2 pt loss. 100 yard kickoff return allowed vs A&M in a 7 pt. loss.

That's 3 just off the top of my head in which a bonehead play on special teams provided the opponent with their winning margin.

There was the ridiculous stand around and play pocket pool punt return vs NTSU after the returner clearly didn't call for a fair catch. That didn't cost us the game in a 27 point loss, but ignited the first part of the momentum that allowed them to pull away.

I will say punting has only been horrid the last 2 seasons I guess it is and that is the first thing to correct. Those "hidden yards" when you are giving up 10-15 yards in field position in every exchange of punts amount to a turnover if that happens much.

One thing is also, the lack of depth has contributed to the special teams woes. We seem to have to play too many starters on special units to have a competitive unit or not give up a blocked kick.

When you have more depth of quality athletes, you can play more 2nd stringers or young kids not ready for offense or defense who can excel on special teams. We just don't have enough or those yet.

This recruiting class is hopefully a good start toward having that.

I could not agree more. And your right, the lack of competent depth is a problem. The kicking and punting game can effect games in ways stats do not show. I remember the teams of the late 70s, we had a great kicking game and that was a huge reason the Hogs were so good then. Steve Little could punt from our 15 and turn the field over. If we get inside the 50, he was a 3 threat.
We didn't have to have great kick off coverage, because the kick offs went out of the end zone. We blocked punts on occasion, but when we didn't, coverage was good.
Special teams makes a huge difference. More attention should be given.
