South Carolina thoughts
« on: February 08, 2019, 10:17:28 am »

The youth of this team - even though I really like pretty much every player, as opposed to years past where I would have major problems with at least one key player - may instill a lack of confidence when heading into South Carolina for a road game.  But it should be noted that - outside of the expected Tennessee onslaught and the fact that Hogs of any age or any level of stardom or championship potential absolutely hate Starkville - these Hogs may actually play better on the road than at home (even among the road losses, a free throw wins the Texas game, and Texas Tech lucked the f*** out with a number of HUGE breaks).  Simply add to that that "in their series against the Gamecocks, the Hogs have won 3 consecutive and 5 of the last 6 meetings," and a few of those were as underdogs, you can't count these Hogs out, especially when led by quite possibly the most well-rounded rhythm shooter that has ever donned a Razorback jersey.  I look for the Hogs to lose this one, mainly because I think Silva will use his experience to handle Gafford, but overall something significant that is happening is that Joe and Gafford are realizing how they can use their strengths and cooperation to open each other up (Joe created some great shots and made some great assists for Gafford against Vandy as well as LSU, and Gafford is looking to Joe more when he gets double/triple teamed).  They are the stars - and I would contend that really the amazing freshman Joe should truly be considered the star now.  But the cool thing is that when they have to lean on others, Jones is also a guy that can give you 20+ and Chaney can be a great alley-oop dunk target when Gafford gets ganged up on, and of course Keyshawn is coming on and hit a game winner when the stars were covered.  Almost all others have been solid on defense - GabeO, Bailey, Sills....  This team has been frustrating at times, but I like them more than I've liked any MA team.  Naturally I wish Gafford had one more year with this crop of youngsters, but....

Silva canít cover Gafford. Theyíll have to double and triple team him like everyone else.

Been in witness protection Rawker?

kenpom has it a 1 pt Hog win.  Seems reasonable.  Important game for SC if they want a shot at the double bye in the SECT.

Silva will foul out or Dan will have 30. Or they double team, which Frank Martin isnít known for doing.

I do like that our team has played fairly well on the road with the exception of TN and OM who was very hot at the time.  SC has played their last 2 on the road so although I'm sure they will be glad to be home being the first game home in awhile may mean they are a tad rusty on the home rims.

I think Mike likes and respects Frank Martin more than any other coach in the league.  Martin is a bit of a psycho on the court but I've heard he's a real gem of a guy off it.

Had planned on going to this game, but grandson's birthday party game first.  I was at the game two years ago and I think this one will be different.  I think the Hogs lose this one.  Chicken's three big guys will keep DG boxed up and their 3 point shooting will be too much to guard.  It will take two hot outside shooters to have a chance for the win.

I'll give ya some South Carolina thoughts...they should change their mascot to Gamethingeys.  Wonder what do they call their women teams?  The Lady Cocks?
This ain't right.  Not really too wild  about Crimson Tide either.

SC is 13th in the SEC in 3 pt fg %. Hogs are 3rd in the SEC IN 3 pt fg % defense

There bigs concern me. However, our guard play should be better. Frank Martin is a quality coach and the only team that has beaten Carolina at home in SEC play is Tennessee. Hogs can not afford a lackluster start. Need Gafford to be involved early.

Honestly,

Iíve been hating on the team lately, but here are my thoughts.

Be prepared for free throw disparity. South Carolina will shoot more.
The game cocks are not a good free throw shooting team. Statistically, we arenít either.
Harris needs to become his previous self and start driving to the rim again.
A sub routine of Harris/Sills needs to become the norm. Drive for fouls.
Bailey/Osa/Chaney are interchangeable because theyíre an offensive liability.
Gafford expends a lot of energy when on the court and ďin the game.Ē He still struggles with mental focus. Thereís nobody to fill the gap when he needs a breather.

South Carolina will probably pack the paint in a zone and dare the Razorbacks to beat them from the 3 point line. If weíre cold, or donít attack, itíll be a long day.

True, and Iím sorry

The Razorbacks showed at LSU that they could shoot well on the road. Iím hoping that they continue that streak and beat USC tomorrow.

I expect to win but it could go either way.  Weíll learn a lot about how far our team has come in this game.  I still think we take it by 4 or 5 points, something like 67-62.

Tough matchup even without being a road game. Silva can go toe to toe with Gafford if he stays out of foul trouble.

They are very physical at the 4. We are more finesse.

Usually a dead crowd which can make for low energy.

We need this one bad.

At least some that donít think Mike is animated enough during the game will get to see someone that is. The ironic part is few of those people would want Frank as our coach.  I gotta give the team and coaches credit though as they have a decent road record so far.

"The Youth of the Team"

Mike knew this...everyone knew this. So why not add a Juco guard and a Juco big man to go with Mason Jones? Instead, we have guys sitting on the bench who cant contribute. His roster management is so terrible it is costing us games this year, and more importantly, an NCAA Tournament bid.

I was listening to post game and Anderson said this game was a "learning experience for our young team".
To be honest, I'm just sick of hearing it.

I turned the radio off.

Not sure youth was the reason for the loss and I'm  tired of that fall back excuse for every loss.

That learning experience reason is over! They have played 3/4 of the season. If you feels they are still learning he should micro manage and use his timeouts to refocus them.

Roster management is so bad with MA but some casual fans don't understand how damaging it is.  We probably have a repeat of the loss of 7-9 players in 3 years when this group graduates.

Just finished watching the game. Not as bad as the final score indicated. I think two things hurt the Hogs. The first is Gafford sitting 15 minutes in the first half. He never got in sync after that. Even though he falls down a lot, it looked different at USCE. He may have been sick. The other thing that hurt was not fulling capitalizing on the Gamecocks turnovers and missed shots. The Hogs should have had at least a ten point half-time lead. I was shocked that they had 16 points off turnovers in the first half. There was a very sloppy stretch of basketball in the first half. As a matter of fact, the Hogs need to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Sometimes it's painful to watch them run a fastbreak.

Gafford has to play at a ALL SEC level for this team to win. That is tough on Gafford and he seems to not only be physically fatigued but also mentally fatigued. A lot was placed on his shoulders this season and guys are being physical with him every game. I look for him to have a bounce back game against Missouri.

Mike has to coach the guards to get the ball to Gafford early in the possession and make Gafford try harder to get position.  Gabe is our best at feeding Gafford which is not a good sign after more than 20 games.  KES is the best at making cuts to the basket and Gabe is the best at passing to the back cut players.  Harris gets frustrated when nobody is moving, cutting and using proper spacing.  We can go on a run if MA makes big changes here.  The only way we can win is to improve these issues because our half court offense is killing us as bad as our defense.

We don't run a half court offense. Nolan used to call it "Huevos rancheros" or something like that.
