Today is the day we look to 2020 recruiting.
« on: February 07, 2019, 08:25:01 am »

We reached the pinnacle of the 2019 class yesterday. I'm confident this staff has their ears pinned back, looking forward to Spring ball, getting everyone in there to mix it up...and also recruiting constantly. We'll begin a new era and decade!

Top targets for 2020?

Any chance at landing a 5* in the 2020 class?

Is it bad that I had to get down to #356 on 2020 player ratings before I found someone from Arkansas:
https://247sports.com/Season/2020-Football/CompositeRecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=Highschool

So, no instate 4* players for next recruiting class? (yet)

Does 2020 look to be especially weak for instate recruiting?

I've been hearing 2019 in state was one of the best hauls we've had in a hot minute. Doesn't seem to be the case for 2020.

There are some really good Arkansas HS players in this class, but the group is not going to be as deep as the 2019 class.  Right now, Arkansas has 73 offers in Texas, 20 in Tennessee and 4 in Arkansas.

No 4 stars on 247 composite yet but just 247 Criswell and Toll are 4 stars

This will be the year that we learn rather Morris and staff's Texas connections pay off.

I'd love to land the Houston product, Zachary Evans.

Think Morris has already answered that question

Focus on Spring ball. Then recruit, then report for fall. Baseball will fill the gaps!

Chad Morris better get his guys. This is the second full year of recruiting so these 2020 guys he has been evaluating since Sophomores. I think we need to get the ball rolling locking in state guys and a QB(or two) to headline the class. There are some big time prospects we are after from Tulsa and Memphis specifically. Morris will get his share from Texas Iím suspecting around 8 prospects.

Looking further into the rankings from 247 and Rivals, we donít have a shot at the current Top 25 players. Donít expect any consensus 5* players in 2020 unless one of our offers blow up during camp.

Still have a few to go for 2019. May will be interesting to see who is disenchanted with their Spring games and such. Hogs are down to 81 total scholarships and I look forward to our state getting its high school football act together to contribute more than four players worthy of scholarship offers.

But I digress.

This class will potentially have a lower ranking simply because we won't (hopefully based on current rankings) be getting our highest ranked players from inside the state. There's no Burks and Henry in this senior class, unfortunately. Other storylines to watch will be: 1) The QB sweepstakes. Illingworth, Morris, Criswell, Haynes King, and Mike Wright are names to watch at the moment. 2) Will we be able to hit it big in nearby recruiting "hotbeds"? We have several offers and lots of interest among players from Tulsa and Memphis. Will we be able to steal players out of those areas from their instate/other major programs?

The biggest component to the upcoming class being of equal or higher ranking as this season's will be if there is noticeable improvement by the Hogs on the field. If we can get to 5-7 or 6-6 that would be a huge jump and obvious evidence to these kids we're recruiting that this program is headed in the right direction.

That would seem to be rather discouraging.  However,, our recruiters MUST obviously pursue much needed new talent from wherever it exists.  I've never clamored for those who represent our best interests to "sign in-state talent first", - - regardless of the disparity in the talent levels of alternative national recruits available.  I applaud giving the nod to in-state talent WHEN THE TALENT LEVELS ARE COMMENSURATE.  I do not favor signing less-talented players simply because they are in-state.  Such a "homer" policy would not be productive in our efforts to compete equitably against SEC-quality competition.
