AAF To Start Play This Week
« on: February 06, 2019, 11:49:33 pm »

The Alliance of American Football starts play this week.

Hogs I could find on team rosters:
Memphis Express: Jamichael Winston, Sr. DE
Atlanta Legends: Bijhon Jackson   DT
Salt Lake Stallions: Austin Allen QB and Henre' Toliver   DB

It looks like they have some games on CBS and other networks this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Other notable people in the new league include QB Aaron Murray, QB Matt Simms, QB Blake Sims, RB Trent Richardson, coach Steve Spurrier, and coach Rick Neuheisel, among others.

You can see all the team rosters and schedules and stuff here: https://aaf.com/

By the way, tickets look to be very reasonable if anyone lives in the eastern part of the state and want to go see Memphis play. (or near any of the 8 teams)

Seeing actual football for the next couple months that isn't spring football might be interesting.

I have 2 season tickets to Arizona Hotshots. Total cost $150 and that included a party with free BBQ and drinks to meet coach. Hope to see Austin Allen this weekend.

Hope Austin does well enough to get a shot in the NFL.

I hadn't realized that the NFL had such an affiliation with the AAF. (some games airing on the NFL Network for instance)

Some of the rules are interesting. For instance, the requirement to go for 2-point conversions after every score and no kickoffs. Those two rules really diminish the role of kickers on a team.

I don't like the lack of kicking but I'm all for speeding up the game. Did drew get cut?

Apparently so.

This article (link) lists Drew Morgan and Javontee Herndon both getting cut.

Had to make the cuts to get down to a 52-man roster I guess, which is somewhat like the NFL. (NFL has a 53-man roster + 10 on practice squad.)

Yep, nothing quite so fun as watching bad football.
No thanks, I see plenty of that during the season.

So...these are all guys who were top performers on the college football teams...didn’t quit make the list of “elite” talent in the NFL...but you call it “bad football”.

You must HATE watching college football...

NFL Europe lasted 16 years and the CFL is still around, along with Arena Football.

As long as the NFL continues to back it as a minor league for them, and they are playing when no other football is on, I can see them sticking around for awhile.

It is a good place for the NFL to develop talent, keep guys that get cut when NFL teams go from 90 to 53 after pre-season, and to test out new rules and things. Also a good feeder system for refs. There are lots of advantages to having a minor league, which is why the NBA, MLB, and NHL do it.

This. It is an avenue of second chances for players. If there are Hogs playing, I’ll be interested to watch. I hope it does become an essential G-League.

I think this one has potential for a few reasons. (1) This not a league to compete with the NFL, but to compliment it. The NFL even asked this league to try some of these rules to see how it impacts the game, fan reaction, etc. (2) The players are paid decently with benefits. Including college tuition for the guys who left early but the NFL didn't work out for them. (3) The players are let out of their contracts if the NFL calls them up.

Time will tell, of course, but this league is set up differently than previous attempts that tried to compete with the NFL or were too over the top.

Hey man, if you've nothing better to do, then watch all you want.  It won't be good.  It won't last.  But if you're happy, I'm happy.  These guys couldn't make it in the bottom tier of NFL teams, and that's bad football, but like i say, if you've nothing better to do...

Well, NFL Europe wasn't good, but they had a lot of fun.  The beer and food was great.  I remember being at a game when an ex-hog got his jaw broke.  Can't remember who it was though.  maybe it was the beer.

I watched Polian and Ebersol last night on the NFL Network, they're credited with creating the AAF.  Looks like it might have a chance to hang around a while.  I'm in Houston for the weekend, so I may hit some old friends up and catch the game tonight at a sports bar or something....if not, I'll watch it in my room.

If anything, I'll watch games for a while just to see a football with a full stripe all the way around it being thrown about.  Haven't seen one of those for 35 years (I guess maybe the CFL still uses them).

There’s a good chance it could flop. I’m interested since there pulling actual coaches and there are Hogs playing.

I’m not even saying it’ll be great football, but the reasoning that they didn’t make the 53 man rosters that has multi-year players doesn’t make sense. I’m guessing you enjoy college football. Well these teams will be more talented than 98% of college football teams.

His wikipedia says he last played in 2014 for the San Antonio Talons

(...and he is 30)

Not sure what he is doing now. Coaching or something somewhere maybe? His twitter account didn't offer any clues.

For as popular as football is and the size of rosters and the chance of getting injured, why not have a viable minor league to develop talent. NFL has so much money they should be behind it. Pay them a decent wage give them medical ins and career development opportunities.  It’s a very good concept. Should do ok if they can put a decent product on the field and market it properly

The world of football is much different now than it was even when the XFL was around, even though that was nothing more than a gimmick. If the AAF works with the NFL and not against, this will work.

In fairness, he's a businessman doing politics instead of the norm, the opposite.

Back to football......maybe it's because the SB was so boring, but I was thoroughly bored with this game the couple times I attempted to watch.

Games outdoors in UT in Feb/Mar gonna be hard to get fans in the seats. I do like that games move along though and some of the rule changes are interesting. Changes to overtime and no extra points is intriguing.
