Eastern Illinois
While the departures of Joe Duncan (.271/.353/.382, 14 SB) and Dougie Parks (.279/.365/.430, 15 SB) will hurt, Eastern Illinois returns a balanced mix of veterans on offense and within the pitching staff. Sr. 2B Jimmy Govern was a first team all-conference performer in 2017 and followed it up by hitting .331/.413/.528 with seven home runs and eight stolen bases last year. A contact-oriented hitter who walks more than he strikes out, he’s slated to hit near the top of the lineup. R-Sr. 1B Hunter Morris (.326/.405/.572, 11 HR), a team leader who led the team with 55 RBIs last year, will provide lefthanded pop in the middle of the lineup. Jr. C Ryan Knernschield (.331/.386/.417) is a veteran behind the plate and Sr. INF Jimmy Huber is another key returnee after hitting .279/.365/.430 while splitting time between shortstop, second base and third base last season.

Key losses on the pitching staff include closer Michael Starcevich (2.92/9 SV) and fellow relief arm Jake Haberer (22 App, 3 SV), but the rotation should be a strength for the Panthers. A second-team All-OVC performer, Sr. RHP Tyler Jones (7-3, 3.52) gives the team a reliable arm to anchor the rotation as the Friday guy. Jr. RHP Alex Stevenson (3-8, 6.45) is a strike-thrower who led the staff with 14 starts last season. Sr. RHP Spencer Dexter (0-2, 6.45) struck out nearly a batter per inning last year while splitting his time between the rotation and the bullpen. JC transfer Michael YaSenka, who went 10-2 with seven complete games and an impressive 14.04 SO/9 for Chesapeake College last season, is an exciting weapon for coach Jason Anderson to utilize.
