Freshman Contributors?
« on: January 30, 2019, 09:22:51 am »

Obviously last year Kjerstad and Martin were the freshman that came through big for us.
Anyone have any educated guesses on who could be the freshman that helps us this year?

After the early indications of spring practice I'm throwing my money on Wicklander ... it sounds like he's the real deal ... although I understand SEC play may humble him a bit.

On the mound, Wicklander and Noland will both have a chance to be weekend starters or major bullpen pieces for us.  I expect Wicklander to be in the rotation for opening weekend and Connor to start in the pen, but things could flip or they might both start for us.  We may also see some other freshmen LHP get into the mix as relievers.

Christian Franklin is likely to be our starting LF and backup CF (as well as our full-time CF when Fletcher goes pro).  Jacob Nesbit will be a reserve IF but has a chance to start at the beginning of the year if Ezell isn't quite ready to play in the field.

There better be several. We only have 10 position players who are not freshmen. They will need some help. We have a full roster where 19 of 39 players are freshmen.

Yep.  Some freshman are needed to put in quality time in the field.  Keeps the starters rested and gather s experience.  Gives us stuff to talk about

Wicklander-he didn’t pitch at the scrimmages this past weekend but there has been a lot of hype and talk about him so I am going to assume he at least somewhat lives up to the hype.
Noland- Was probably the second best pitcher that threw this weekend behind Campbell. His fastball was low 90s but his curve ball is already an elite offspeed that he is not scared to throw in any count. I don’t know what his arm stamina will be but if he doesn’t start expect him to make an instant impact out of the bullpen.

Jacob Burton- was a pleasant surprise. The ball explodes out of his hand. We were talking and said it looks like he is throwing pretty dang hard and then someone struck out and overheard DVH say it’s ok that was 95mph you haven’t seen that very much. So would not be surprised to see him pitch out of the pen and maybe start midweek to see what he has.

Caden Monke- tall and skinny lefty. Think Blaine Knight but left handed. Showed really good control and appeared to sit around 90-91. Has kind of an delivery where he hides he ball and it sneaks up on hitters. He’s one to keep an eye on because he may need to pitch some big innings if we have some arms get tired down the stretch.

Liam Henry- Another lefty that kind of surprised. He didn’t have anything that stood out but just looked composed and like he belonged out there on the mound. Think he will be a guy that gets mid week innings and could develop into a solid pitcher.

Stephen Sanchez- really looks the part on the mound about 6-6 230 but really struggled with control and looked overwhelmed. Has raw natural ability and size so wouldn’t be surprised if he gets some chances early on in mid week games to try and figure it out.

Christian Franklin- really the only freshman it appears to be poised to contribute in the field and at the plate. Didn’t do any thing at the plate that stood. Wouldn’t be surprised if he starts off at the bottom maybe even 9 hole as second leadoff because of his speed. Did have a nice diving catch in the outfield but him and Dom did have a miscommunication on an easy pop fly that landed between them so hopefully they work that out quickly.
