Dom isn't fast and disciplined enough to be a great lead-off, in my opinion. Maybe Ezell, CM, HK, Dom, Plunkett. Flip Dom/Plunkett pending who is hotter. Put HK 4 if you want to but he gets enough hits I like him in one the first 3 spots to help maximize his ABs. Dom/Plunkett can be the HR guys that follow

Dom has the speed, not CM or tanner speed, but he faster than average and enough for oeadoff.  Discipline though I agree.  Maybe though him getting some lead off bats he knows he has to be disciplined, maybe some reverse type phsycolgy for him?

On a side note, itís so nice to see people disagree and discuss things in a civilized manner. This is why I love EI.

You suck, your opinion is crap, fire DVH!!!!!  There feel like hogville?

I agree with you, EI is great because of posters like UCA, spal, and so many other well educated baseball guys.

I just donít understand why you want to hit your best hitter in the 3 hole. Everything Iíve read says you put your 3 best hitters 2-1-4. It would be interesting, but I personally wouldnít hate putting Kjerstad leadoff and leaving Martin behind him and then Dom in the 4 hole.

Fletcher has 1 SB each of his first two years here.  1-2 in 2017 and 1-4 in 2018.  He has average speed at best.  That isn't a knock against him, but his defensive ability to read the ball of the bat is truly next level and lets his average speed play up.

I just like him behind someone like Martin where he will get a steady diet of fastballs.

But the guys you have in the 1, 2 and 4 are all solid hitters as well.  I understand wanting to get Martin as many ABs as possible, but you also wanted to set your lineup effectively as well.  I think Goodheart eventually settles in as a #5 hitter.  If you flip Kjerstad and Martin, you have Kjerstad / Fletcher / Goodheart 3-5.  That is three LHHs in a row and you run some risk against a left handed specialist you might see in some pens.

Goodheart will probably start off in leadoff

My guess would be Ezell.

Ezell, Martin, Kjerstad, Goodheart. 1-4 if Kenley and/or another quick player hits well, then put them in the 5 or 6 and basically break the lineup into 2.

I didnít catch that he was full go. If thatís the case then he would be a good candidate.  Goodheart was there during the fall scrimmages

Ezell has been at 2nd every scrimmage this spring.  He didn't throw the first week.  He would field the grounder and go through the motion without actually throwing.  He started throwing the ball last weekend.

100% agree. Fletcher is elite defensively because his insane breaks plus great arm. B- speed at best and just not lead-off speed whatsoever. Cannot imagine having Martin and Ezell held up on the bases behind him. Plus he is more of a gap/power guy then someone who will consistently give you base hits.

And I only had Plunkett in top 5 going off the 5 players who were being discussed. Don't have enough knowledge of the new guys (other than Ezell) or how people have progressed to really go beyond those 4. Goodheart works for me. It would sure be nice to see McFarland finally reach his potential and be a top 5 hitter but sure seems like his head is still holding him back from early reports of this year, feel bad for him.

Fletcher is so fun to watch defensively.  He makes extremely difficult plays look easy because of his insane breaks and precise routes.  He also shuts down running games with that big arm.  Fletcher is very much a natural pull hitter although he can sometimes work the whole field and we want to give him plenty of opportunities where someone is on 1B.  Not many pitchers would get through Ezell / Kjerstad / Martin in order.

I want McFarland to reach his potential as much as anyone on this board.  We saw what peak McFarland could be starting against Kent State on Sunday through the Kentucky series.  His ceiling is being a .320 hitter with 12+ HRs.  Could you imagine having that as your potentially fourth best hitter in the lineup?  Heck, Ezell could be a .350 hitter for all we know.  Will be an interesting year for sure.

Did anyone catch today's scrimmage? From the sounds of it Noland was very impressive.

Very.  I think he sat down the first 10 or 11 batters he saw.

I don't want to talk him up too much b/c you never know how the season plays out but it wouldn't surprise me if he worked himself into a weekend role..... maybe even starter.

He went 4 and the only hit was a double off the wall by Fletcher

From the scrimmages it sounds like our pitching is gonna be ok. We will have Campbell on Friday and Wicklander Kostyshock and Noland are going for the other two spots. Our bullpen is deep enough that if they can only go a couple innings one day we will be alright. I think you will see Kopps start the weekdays while he works his way all the way back.

Martin hit leadoff this weekend.  It will be interesting to see if that is where he ends up in the lineup.

I just think you almost have to put him in a spot to drive in runs, right? All comes down to how much Ezell and HK can get on base in front of him. Will be fun to see how DVH decides to manage that situation.

I think it depends on the situation. If youíre playing eastern Illinois where he can steal second/third at will.. then batting lead off makes sense.

If youíre playing a legit SEC catcher who greatly reduces the chance of a successful steal and therefore he wonít run as often, then it may make more sense to move him back to make better use of his power

Martin reminds me of a beefed up Ryne Sandberg.  Got to hit him 2 or 3.
