COLUMN: Dear #Vols fans: Let players and coaches worry about keeping this No. 1 ranking. You just enjoy it. You’ve spent more than a decade earning it: http://bit.ly/2DobKXV

You, the long-suffering Tennessee fan, can celebrate the Vols basketball team rising to the No. 1 spot in both of this week’s major polls.

You, the long-suffering Tennessee fan, don’t have to ignore the fact that the Vols started playing basketball in 1908 and, despite having an underrated history with the sport, are now ranked No. 1 nationally for just the second time in history. And the first time lasted all of one week.

Eleven years later, the Vols are back in the top spot.

The goal this time, obviously, is to have more staying power in that top spot. And if you’re like me and believe those ignorant of history are bound to repeat it, Tennessee’s first trip to No. 1 lasted only one week because its first game at No. 1 was … a midweek trip to in-state rival Vanderbilt.

So far, without question. But there's a LOT of season left.

COLUMN FROM LEXINGTON: Bad habits finally bite top-ranked #Vols in shockingly naive loss at fifth-ranked Kentucky: http://bit.ly/2GtOfzx

LEXINGTON, Ky. — You probably don’t want to read this. I wouldn’t want to read it if I were in your shoes.

If you can get past that initial reaction, though, you probably know it’s true.

This was coming.

And Tennessee needed it.
