I don't pretend to know or care what he was making or whatever at WV, but Yeah from the outside looking in, it is a why question. Why leave a successful P5 to coach an average at best G5 program close to home or not? Holgorsen has always struck me as an odd dude though.

A few possible reasons:

(1) He just concluded his 8th year at West Virginia, and he probably had taken them as far as he was going to. The relationship on both sides was growing stale.

(2) He is well-familiar with the Cougarsí program and area, having spent a couple of seasons as their OC.

(3) He can attract better talent to Houston than Morgantown.

(4) Houston is about to make him the richest non-Power 5 head coach ever.

(5) Houston is known to be making a push for Big XII membership. Hiring Holgorsen demonstrates a commitment to that.

Houston needs to work on their home attendance at games if they hope to move into the Big 12. They need to average 50K p/game. Houston averaged 32.6K p/game in 2017 which isn't much higher than Big 12 bottom feeder Kansas at 26.6K. I don't think that any other Big 12 school averages below 50K.

I think that the problem they have is that this has been a problem for years whether they have a great team or an average team. They just can't seem to get people to attend their games.

They had trouble drawing good attendance when they were in the old SWC and winning.

I think their biggest problem is what do they bring?  Theyíre not going to bring more eyeballs for a TV contract and it would impact the other schoolís recruiting. Unless Texas politics plays a roll, of course.

I went to UofH for a while....they don't have much fan support. Campus is small, downtown style and most kids don't live in dorms. Athletics support is low for all sports. Residents of Houston support A&M more than Houston or Rice....that being said - Rice even has a stronger following than Houston ...big $$ at Rice

Holgerson was leaving WVU after this season.  Just a matter of where.

This is why some of us said HY was only a puppet at UH.  TF reminds me of the former good ole boy execs WalMart used to have and that is far from a compliment.

DH may have done the math and concluded his $20M at Houston sets him up better than what happens when he exits WVa.

When Holgorsen was at OSU he lived in an extended stay hotel all year. He is single - maybe he prefers chasing TX tail vs WVa tail? (Implies, purposefully, that he has been known to spend time on the bar circuit with an eye on the ladies and two hands on a drink.)

Yes he is.  I think itís just a matter of time till Houston ends up in a P5, just maybe not B12.  If they could ever figure out the fan support thing they could become a very solid program.

I think MA is overrated.  Herman went 22-4 while MA went 15-11.  The numbers don't lie.  Just because you were a QB at lame arse texas don't mean you're a good HC.

He deserves better. I lived in Houston for a couple of years. Good, sports town. Not much attendance in those days for college football. Their teams were great. Football and baxetball. It was when Houston first came into the SWC. Or soon thereafter.

what?  The SEC sure a schit ain't gonna take them.  They told WVU to pound sand when WVU wanted in the SEC, so Houston ain't coming or getting an invite to the SEC.   They're not going to the Big10 or Pac12, that leaves the ACC and I just don't see it.

I could see Houston in the Pac-12 if Texas eventually goes there. Houston makes more sense for the Pac-12 than Texas Tech would as a second team from the state. Bigger market, easier travel.

Houston doesnít have the academics, money or fan base to be invited into a P5 conference...never will. They are an urban commuter school

They used to be an urban commuter school. They are now considered in the highest category of Research University and have elevated themselves quite a bit in recent years. The state of Texas has determined that they can't just pour all their money into UT and TAM, and Houston is one of the schools benefiting from that.

Hard to say a bigger market. If people aren't coming to home games, they aren't going to watch PAC-10 games on TV.

Texas would be an attractive option for the Pac 12 on the surface, since they don't fully know how they are, but Houston? I don't see that at all.

Big market, but do they draw good ratings and have good attendance? NO! Commuter school, derisively referred to as Cougar High in Texas..

The Pac 12 would look down their noses at UH. IMO, it's Big 12 or nothing as far as getting into a Power 5 conference.

However, the Big 12 was looking for warm bodies so they could still have two divisions after Col., Neb., A&M and Mizzou left and the best they could do was .... West Virginia?

TCU made sense to make it 10, they decided to play 9 conference games rather than add 2 more and eventually came up with the gimmicky Championship game to pit 1 vs 2 from the regular season.

The Big 12 has passed on UH how many times? At least 3. What makes them more attractive now? Fertitta?

Why was he going to get fired??????????

As for Houston attendance.  I attended a game against Arkansas in, I think, 1976.  Depending on the late Hog spotter, Bob Carver for tickets.  He came back explaining that the only Hog tickets available was in the endzone and up high or he could get me 50 yard line tickets on the Houston side.  I took the Houston side 50 yard line tickets and we sat pretty much alone, no other seats taken real near us.  I doubt Houston had 10K fans there that night.  Arkansas filled their side up, whatever that amount was.
