Would you settle for a 9-9 SEC record now?
« on: December 07, 2018, 03:44:19 pm »

Before the season started, I would have jumped at a .500 season in the SEC.  With a decent non-conference season that would have given us a shot at making the tournament.  With this great start, stars have now gotten in my eyes.  The optimistic part of me wants to believe we can actually win the league!

I have to keep reminding myself it's way too early to judge this team.  This team is depending on too many freshmen.  The league is much tougher than it has been in the past.  You have to be a lot better than the home team to overcome the SEC referees on the road.  Injuries are always a possibility.

So with all these negative reminders tempering my optimism, I still think a .500 SEC record would be a worthy accomplishment for this team.  Hoping for better but trying to be realistic.

No I wouldn't. I think this team could be better than that. Time will tell, and the kids got aways to go. One game at a time.

I had us at 9-9 or 8-10 before the season. That was more of a guess than anything with so many new bodies, made it easy to count home games wins and road games losses. Now that I'm a bit more familiar with our personnel, I'm thinking 13 is the ceiling with 10 being the floor. I would predict 11-7 today, and be happy with that, as it should be good for a tourney bid.

Edit: I forgot to answer the question. No, I wouldn't settle for 9-9 but it would be hard to be upset about it.

I think they’re capable of much more. I only expect them to get better from now till then.

I didn't come into the season with any won/loss record in mind.  I did feel like this team would be enjoyable to watch based on the pieces.  I've never been so anxious for conference play to start in years!   I've decided to just enjoy the ride, enjoy each game and short of them just laying an egg, enjoy the season.

I think this team can win 11 games in the SEC. 9-9 would probably put us right on the bubble but 10 would get us in. The hogs have to win both games against Missouri and Texas A&M this year.

Auburn and Tennessee are very good basketball teams, top 10-ish.

Look out, but Kentucky is 7-1 (though against a schedule even worse than ours so far).

Mississippi State also is 7-1.

Florida is 5-3, and I'll believe we can beat them when we do it.

Arkansas plays a total of five games against these top SEC contenders (two at home). Our home-and-home series: LSU, Texas A&M, Missouri, Vanderbilt.

This is the time to rack up a great SEC record.

If we somehow finish our OOC schedule at 12-1, I'd "settle" for .500 in conference, as long as we win a couple in the SECT.  23-12 would get us in the Dance.

Yep.  This team is still untested, and still a young team and a CMA coached team has yet to prove to me it can win consecutively on the road.  Until then, 9-9 sounds about par for the course.

I will judge the record by what I see on the court. I can tell you this much, we have not seen the best of Miss St and LSU. Tennessee, Kentucky and Auburn are very good. I would not predict victory over Florida, and Alabama until those games arrive. If I see our guys play good basketball and finish 9-9 I will take it. If that happens I think we could be a 6-7 bid league. I could still see 11-7 to 8-10. Would be satisfied with most anything between if the league gets a grip back onto preseason expectations. If teams that have been disappointing to this point continue to disappoint I would like to see that 11-7 or better. Go Hogs!!

We will be tough to beat at home so I think we win at least 8 at home, should be able to get 2 or 3 on the road.

Here’s the conference schedule and what I think we will do based on what we’ve seen from everyone else:

If you’re going to answer the question honestly then you have to look at the schedule.

@ A&M - W
Florida - Toss up
LSU - L
@ Tennessee - L
@ Ole Miss - W
Missouri - W
Georgia - W
@ LSU - L
Vandy - W
@ USCe - W
@ Missouri - W
Mississippi State - Toss up
@ Auburn - L
A&M - W
@ Kentucky - L
Ole Miss - W
@ Vandy - W
Alabama - W

That’s 11 wins and 5 losses before the toss ups.

I worry Texas isn’t as good as we thought. We beat Indiana when they were without 4 players. So I feel expectations should be tampered a bit.

With that said, this team is and has already gotten better. We definitely have a good shot at the tournament! Preseason I would have been THRILLED with an NIT bid.

These youngins are fun to watch!!!

12-6 would be my prediction I guess. A lot of those games could go either way at this point in time. I would consider the following locks for wins- MIZ, UGA, VAN, A&M, OM, Bama. Nothing will come easy on the road except for maybe SC and MIZ.

I see 9 or 10 wins as the floor if everyone stays healthy and we might could notch 12 or 13 wins. For a change, we might actually be more dangerous at tournament time than during the year.

I think that the implication here is that CMA-coached teams are particularly bad on the road, whereas over the past five years they've gone 21-24 on the road in conference, for second best in the league.  Since we joined the SEC no other Arkansas coach has come close to that kind of road record except for Nolan Richardson in his first five SEC years, when he went 23-17 on the road in conference.  The next six years he was 15-33.  Nonetheless, we'll read posts all season long about CMA's mythical ineptitude on the road.

Wow, expectations have gone through the roof. I’ll admit the impact of Harris and Jones have given me hope but It’s a little early to talk 23 or 24 wins.

Before the season started I thought we would at least hit 10-8, and on my schedule I penciled in 11-7. So I definitely wouldn't settle for 9-9 now.

9-9 should be the floor considering how the “difficulty” of the schedule is shaping up.  Injuries and underachieving has made the SEC look less formidable and deep so far.  Thought this was a 20-21 win team before season started due to Gafford + Harris + schedule.  19 was the common line for an o/u conversation.  Appears it was low now that we’ve seen our team and the competition.  Still don’t think we’ll have a good idea on how we stack up nationally till after the first 6 SEC games and TT.

From about 1996 through 2013 we were pretty awful on the road.  If you stopped following basketball closely sometime back in those days, you'd probably still have the impression that we were terrible on the road.  Nonetheless, truth is we've been pretty decent on the road the last five years.

There have been a couple of seasons where the SEC as a whole had a solid road record overall. The road win difficultly partially depends on the unbalanced schedule and who you play on the road in a season.  Our road schedule this season has some tough trips.

Before the season began I would definitely have been pleased with 9-9. I know that we are young and the SEC will be a step up in competition, but from what I've seen so far my expectations are for more than .500 conf. record.

There's a couple of people on here that would rather see Arkansas lose on JB. Facts and stats don't matter.

I’m no basketball expert.....so I don’t post much in here.   But is there a reason that during timeouts, our three assistants are doing the coaching, drawing up the plays while our head coach just looks and listens?

A lot of teams have an end-game coach to set up offense or defense.

My problem is they took way too long. And Gafford acted like there was 0.8 seconds left instead of 1.8. Way too rushed.

9-9 puts them on the bubble because they got a easier sec slate. Get a couple of the weaker teams twice.

If the ft shooting doesn't improve and they dont force more than 12 to's per game 9-9 is going to be about right.
