5th Starting Freshman QB
« on: October 20, 2018, 02:17:40 pm »

So I got Nutt, Lunney, M. Jones, Noland.

Who did I miss? Did Tyler Wilson start against Texas in 2008?

Well his yards per attempt better than Ty and Cole.  Mason would throttle him next week with this level of play.  But he did good as a Fr.   Got plays off.  Rarely a bust.  Understood where ball was to go.  Timing with backs ok.

Mitch was better.  Good game vs Vandy.  Threw big TD vs AU vs blitz.

Did Matt Jones actually start a game his FR year?  I thought hootie started that JC QB in the first series and then Jones came in.

I may be wrong, but I think a RS freshman is still considered a freshman.  But I could be wrong.

Mustain, as a true freshman, was the last Razorback QB to beat Alabama.  His final record as a Razorback QB was 8 and 0.

I think the JC QB you are referring to is Ryan Sorahan. I just don't remember if Jones started a game that year or not.

LOL he was fortuitous in being the last Razorback QB to play Alabama before Saban took over.

Not to mention Hillis, McFadden, Felix, and Leigh Tiffin for Bama (1 missed PAT, 3 missed FGs - we won by 1 in overtime), but that's beyond the point.

Are you debating either fact?  As a true freshman he performed admirably.  Why anyone still debates this I will never understand.  Its years after.  Get over it.

Here are his stats for that day. 7 for 22 for 97 yds with 1 TD, three picks and a QBR of 30.8.  You two can carry on the discussion.

Don’t normally disagree with you, sickboy.  Scholastically, yeah, they should be sophs.  But in terms of eligibility, they’re freshmen.

Joe Kines was Bama's DC that year.  He said he threw everything and the kitchen sink at MM and he made the play to win, hats off.

Tom Jones was our starting QB…but I think he was out hurt, maybe a couple games. So Taylor got some good playing time.

Also, Casey Dick. Nutt pulled his redshirt about 2-thirds the way through his freshman year.

Yes to Casey Dick. And call me crazy, but didn't his brother Nathan get a start? (Unless Nathan wasn't still a freshman.) I remember a game where Nathan was the main QB, but Casey came in at the end to save the day. More weird Hog history.

Good catch. Nathan Dick started against LSU in the C. Dick to London Crawford pass game in 2008. He was a freshman, per sports-reference.com, but he seems to have signed in 2007, so he was a redshirt freshman in 2008. I guess the "5th starting freshman" thing the announcers kept babbling about today meant true freshmen.

OK, but I wouldn't have remembered that being the last game, LSU. I just didn't know whether or not Nathan D redshirted, or how long he was at Arkansas before he transferred.

Im getting old but Brad Taylor started against Baylor in LR and beat them in a shootout.  I think.

The more I think about it the more I DON'T think Matt Jones ever started as a FR.

Are we sure hootie started as a FR and not a soph?

Someone call the AD office and get the 5.

Not to worry, Hootie also completely lost track of Mustain somewhere in South Carolina on his way to his 8th consecutive win as a freshman starter.

Thought Noland looked pretty good for a true freshman. Got away with a couple throws right into coverage but our WR also don't do any favors getting separation.

It's going to be interesting what happens between Noland and Jefferson at the QB position in 2 or 3 years.

M-16 Was miss handled and ruined by Nutt!

That's the narrative here but there are lots of 5* players who don't pan out. If Mitch was half as good as advertised he wouldn't have been 3rd string at USC. Happens a lot but the hype at Arkansas combined with the Nutt drama made it worse.
