It's great just to hear Coach Chavis talk football, such a wealth of knowledge and got me ready to knock a wall down for the man.  We're very lucky to have him as our coach, and someone we dang sure needed.

Chavis is a very good defensive coach.

He publicly stated when he was at LSU that for his defense to work, he needs 2 lock down Cornerbacks.  He has one with Pulley, so it looks like a key this season will be to have another CB that is as good as Pulley.

Chavis' defenses are usually good at the following (no particular order).

Defensive End play
Linebacker play
Cornerback play
Tackling
Affecting the opposing QB with pressure

It will be refreshing and great to see us tackle better, to see us have better Linebacker play, to see us have better Cornerback play, and to see us apply more pressure on the opposing offense.

Even if he does nothing from a coaching standpoint, the boost he and Caldwell have provided in defensive recruiting alone will make the defense way better. I mean, he's an awesome coach and we should see results because of it. So, in summary, I think he was a great hire.

The Chief is killing it. Like the future Big-uns he's got committed.
Ready to see how we do first couple of weeksthis season while his philosophy sets in and the players start to "get it".

I like the Chief because he's a great teacher. Henry and Greenlaw are impressed, as Mike Irwin explains above.

THE CHIEF was a great hire. He seems happy here already and I like his recruiting. Sure looks great in Razorback RED with a hog on his shirt  as opposed to “who died” maroon. ;D

One of the peculiar things with the last staff was having the goods play everyone else. Obviously if the "everyone else" were at SEC level they would be a "good".

Or the staff from two ago who would not let the defense practice full out. How do you get better by playing against the 3s and 4s? How do you get better when you cannot practice your full defense?

I like Joe is working with Chief to understand and pick apart each other's groups. It is Good against Good which gives the team a feel for playing against SEC-level competition. It has been a looooong time since the Hogs best practiced against each other.

Joe and Chief will make each group stronger. As this strong recruiting kicks in it will only get better.

I think that what happened to Chavis at A&M was their lack of pass defense the last two seasons. The 2015 season was more indicative of Chavis-like passing defense numbers from during the time that he was at LSU. In Chavis's first season at A&M (2015) he retained the Secondary Coach (Terry Joseph) from the previous DC. Joseph stayed through the 2016 season, took a job at Notre Dame and was replaced by Ron Cooper in 2017. Cooper is now with the Hogs.

Despite dialed-up pressure on opposing QB's up front, A&M went from allowing 166.3 passing YPG in 2015 to 250 YPG in 2016 and then to 237.6 YPG in 2017. I don't think that it was for a lack of talent. Now I can see where having to play 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores last season might have had some effect on the results produced last season, but what about 2016?

Pass defense is the area where Chavis needs to insure that we play much better. I think we have the pieces in place to apply far more pressure up front  this season, but he also needs to have our Secondary ready to be able play efficiently or we may fall victim to big plays again.

The only game I saw his d last year, besides ours, was the UCLA game. They pounded that qb the first half. He was winding his arse and scratching his watch. They were bringing pressure from everywhere. The second half no pressure. What happened ? Did Sumlin tell him to play safe ? Did they just wear themselves out the first half ?
I think Morris is going to let him do his thing here. He's promising pressure. (We have heard that before.) I think he will bring it and this is gonna be a fun year.

He's only 62. He has several more years left before he retires. I do believe Arkansas will be his last coaching job though.

Its gratifying for me to read that someone is "only 62" (which is years in my rear view mirror) and still has several productive years left.  My exact sentiments, born out by personal experience.

You have become one of my favorite posters, Guv.  :)   At least in this case, you get it.

I really like him. I think Chavis will get us to the middle of the SEC pack on defense. That will make AR very competitive. I think it will be hard to have a shutdown defense with a wide open offense at the same time. If he can be +5 to +10 on turnovers for the season, then AR has a chance to win some games.

yep. all that matters is they are aggressive enough to force some turnovers and sacks that force punts.

I have a brother-in-law that is pushing 94 and he goes to his business and works every day. My mother-in-law is 95. My oldest sister is 92. All these people are going strong. These days 62 is far from elderly if you stay active and exercise your mind.  Looks like the chief is doing that big time.

My thoughts are that he hasn't coaches a single game yet.

So far, I'd say he's like a restaurant that used to be a really hot spot, then went to some bad years, and now is under new management. So far, I've been seated promptly and I'm digging the atmosphere of the place, but the points that really matter, the price and taste of the food are both complete unknowns to this point.

This thread is about Chavis. As far as Coach Morris goes, I think you're short sighted by not acknowledging the FACT that he took a winless team and improved them drastically in short order and took them to bowl eligible. Context of a record is important.

Ask me my thoughts on him AFTER we watch the defense for 3 or 4 games. Will the db's actually be able to run AND look for the football at the same time? Will they be playing 10 yards off on 3rd and 3? Will the lb's continually get sucked in by the simplest play action? Will the safeties constantly be out of position? And will they actually be able to tackle by wrapping up?

Well he and Caldwell have upgraded our defensive recruiting like we haven’t seen before. If he can get this defense playing with some grit and our back 7 on par, we will be a force. Loving the hire so far.

First reply here summed my thoughts up pretty well. This is something we haven't seen before.

Thoughts on Chavis from an A&M player.

https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/college-sports/collegesports/2018/08/07/report-former-am-defensive-starter-comments-simplicity-aggies-previous-defensive-scheme

Chavis dials up pressure and expects his Secondary to excel in coverage. Last season (at A&M) he had the misfortune of having 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores (less than beneficial experience levels) see a lot of snaps in the Secondary. The results were not good. At Arkansas this year he has 2 Seniors and 2 pretty exceptional Sophomores starting in the Secondary along with younger back-ups. I'd suggest that there might not be a great deal of substitution of those 4 the vast majority of the time. They will carry a large load and be expected to perform in variances of "man" and "zone" calls.

If the Secondary finds success, the pressure scheme up front could force more turnovers on contested balls in the Secondary while securing more "Hurries" and "Sacks" up front.

We will see.

Bingo Muskogee. The ability of the DB's (physical and mental) plays a big role in how "difficult" or complex the defensive calls are.

I'm aware they haven't played a down yet. But if you remember when he was hired what were the questions and statements by the "experts" about the Chavis hire? Not to mention some idiot fans from several teams.
1. Lost his fire.
2. Can't/won't recruit (craziest of all)
3. Game passed him by.
4. To old.

Exactly, recruiting seems to be on the rise from day one, however my personal feeling is he underachieved at A&M so I have some slight skepticism.

These are my feelings exactly. But I will say that the powers-that-be at A&M shoved him down Sumlin's throat and Chiefs defensive philosophy was the worst possible fit with Sumlin's offensive philosophy. But the Aggies thought they could throw money at a problem and solve it just like they've now done with Jimbo!

First let me say I realize what our resent record against atm is.

I think the problem with them was the same problem we had.  Namely being soft.  And I think this came directly from our previous head coaches.

I'm not talking about whether or not a player would hit you but whether or not they would put in the work needed to be the last man standing.  Y'all know that it's easy to play the game when you're fresh and excited but when your legs start cramping and you want to puke you start thinking about that instead of what you need to do next and that is what gets you beat.  That mental toughness comes from the very top and works it's way down.  If the head guy is slacking then the whole team will be save those few who just aren't built that way.

So why haven't we beat them?  Depth.  They just had more guys than we had that could/would play hard enough to be those guys.

Edit:   I'm just saying that being rested in the second half/4th Q makes it easier not ragging on anyone.

4. To old.

I understand...just messin'. But as for those questions:

1.) I don't see that in the videos coming out of practice.
2.) See current recruiting class.
3.) TBD
4.) He's not in the ground.

There's a lot to be excited about TODAY. I'll reserve anything else for August 31st.
