Ohio State football: 2011 Buckeyes had to deal with major distractions, too

Quote
A football program in tumult. A new coach in charge. Questions abounding.

As it pertains to Ohio State in the wake of Urban Meyer being placed on paid administrative leave as an inquiry begins into what and when he knew of allegations of domestic abuse brought by the ex-wife of former assistant coach Zach Smith? Yes, that, too.

But back in 2011, the Buckeyes were dealing with another upheaval as preseason camp approached. Ten-year coach Jim Tressel had been forced to resign two months earlier primarily because of not being forthright with an NCAA investigation. Luke Fickell had been named interim head coach, the longtime assistant’s first head coaching job. Fickell was 37 then; OSU’s current acting OSU head coach, Ryan Day is 39.

“As players, we really didn’t know much about what was going on in the situation with coach Tressel,” said Zach Boren, who played fullback for Tressel for three seasons and one year under Meyer, in 2012. “It kind of has that same feeling now. We really won’t know much about what’s happening with coach Meyer until all the facts come out. ... So we shouldn’t make assumptions about anything.”

One obvious assumption, though, is it will be a major distraction for OSU players when preseason camp begins Friday, headed toward the Sept. 1 opener against Oregon State. Having gone through a similar situation, Boren offered a different perspective.

“Players are so highly trained, and we play at Ohio State — you constantly have distractions,” Boren said. “From fans emailing you and stuff, to ESPN talking bad about you, even local radio and what their opinions are. You learn to deal with those things.”

Of the second chances Meyer has granted including Aaron Hernandez, the 33-year-old grandson of Earle Bruce may do him in.

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/08/ohio_state_never_contacted_cou.html

Quote
No one from Ohio State contacted Courtney Smith to discuss domestic assault allegations she made against her ex-husband, according to her lawyer.

Julia Leveridge, the attorney for Courtney Smith, released a statement Monday to Brett McMurphy that her client is "a victim of domestic violence," adding that "blaming the victim ... should be unacceptable."

Smith told McMurphy last week that Ohio State coach Urban Meyer knew about a domestic abuse incident involving his former assistant Zach Smith in 2015 and did not act.

Ohio State is investigating how Meyer handled the complaint.

"Ms. Smith is cautiously optimistic that The Ohio State University's investigative committee will determine if proper reporting protocol was followed upon learning of the ongoing, abuse allegations against Zach Smith," Leveridge said in the statement. "We believe the University must prioritize the safety and well-being of others above all else. While The Ohio State University has never contacted Ms. Smith to discuss these allegations, she will fully cooperate with the university's current investigation."

Why would Urban Meyer risk his legendary career over one troubled assistant?

Quote
COLUMBUS, Ohio — An out-of-control assistant coach who should have been disposable, but wasn’t, has further jeopardized Urban Meyer’s already tenuous standing at Ohio State.

The new allegations further portray Zach Smith as an employee with no apparent concern for repercussions. (The least important allegation is mailing sex paraphernalia to the football complex; far more problematic are the assertions of sex with a staffer in the office and the White House insanity.) He took brazen entitlement to a new level. And his employment continued at Ohio State until his disputes with Courtney, and her allegations of abuse, went public last month.

It could be an ironic ending for Meyer, a three-time national champion coach whose gilded run at Florida was in part tainted by his tolerance for troubled athletes. There were at least 31 arrests of Meyer’s Gators between 2005-10.

He put up with Aaron Hernandez, who would become a convicted murderer years later and then hang himself in prison. He put up with Percy Harvin, who reportedly attacked an assistant coach and failed drug tests, then repeatedly found trouble in the NFL ranks. He put up with Carlos Dunlap, who was suspended the week of the 2009 Southeastern Conference championship game for driving under the influence but then reinstated shortly thereafter for the Gators’ bowl game.

There was a player charged with firing an AK-47 outside a nightclub; another charged with ringing up dozens of fraudulent charges on the credit card of a deceased woman; another who was accused of sending death threats by text message to his girlfriend.

The question that has gone unanswered thus far in this increasingly surreal story is why Urban Meyer risked one of the greatest coaching careers in the history of the sport on behalf of Zach Freakin’ Smith. Not Dan Mullen or Charlie Strong or Tom Herman, star coordinators who went on to successful head-coaching careers. Zach Smith, who has never been more than a position coach.

There is no way to argue that Meyer was oblivious to his assistant’s issues — even if he didn’t know all of them, he knew enough of them that he should have been profoundly concerned. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith knew enough, too.

Was it loyalty to Smith’s grandfather, former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, a mentor of Meyer’s? If so, that was spectacularly misplaced and unrewarded loyalty.

Was it some missionary zeal to help Smith deal with his demons? If so, that’s a job better left to trained therapy professionals.

Was it an internal belief that Meyer was too big to fail, or too self-important to admit a profound staffing mistake?

One thing that was clear in talking to students and fans on and around campus Friday: Ohio State football is bigger than even the most successful coach, and if he ever thought otherwise he was ruinously mistaken. Woody Hayes found that out in the 1970s, and Jim Tressel found that out within the last decade.

Both won national titles, and both were pushed out when scandal struck. Urban Meyer may be next, undone by a previously anonymous assistant coach who was not worth the trouble his boss tolerated for many years.

Some thoughts on Urban Meyer & the culture of big-time college football

Quote
So Meyer will sit out through the Buckeyes' season-opener against Oregon State, then return to coaching during practice the following week. However, he will not be allowed to be present during games against Rutgers and TCU.

Does that punishment fit Meyer's crime? Or should he have been fired, or not suspended at all?

Considering what all Meyer admitted to (basically continuing to employ a menace to society because of allegiance to Smith's grandfather, Earle Bruce; and then later misleading his bosses about it by deleting old text messages), it's hard to believe that his job wasn't saved by his level of success and the importance of football to his university. A lesser coach probably would have been fired.

So on at least that level, Meyer got off light.

I was traveling today and heard bits and pieces of a sports radio show based in Dallas. One of the commentators suggested that Ohio State, right now, is the most hated program in College Football.

Urban Meyer will return to the sidelines when the No. 4 Buckeyes host Tulane on Sept. 22 for a 3:30 p.m. in the fourth game of the season https://trib.al/foImDHu

Ohio State coach will return to the sidelines when the No. 4 Buckeyes host Tulane on Sept. 22 for a 3:30 p.m. in the fourth game of the season.

The university suspended Meyer after an investigation centered on what Meyer knew and did about allegations of abuse against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, who was fired July 23 after his ex-wife sought a protective order.

"Permitting such misconduct to continue is not consistent with the values of the University and reflects poorly on coach Meyer, athletic director Smith, and the University," an August statement read. "Their handling of this matter did not exhibit the kind of leadership and high standards that we expect of our athletic director, head coach, assistant coaches and all on the football staff.

"Urban Meyer is suspended through Sept. 2 2018, and for the games on September 1, 8, and 15 without pay. Gene Smith is suspended without pay from August 31-September 16."

The Big Ten Network will televise the game.

Ohio State faces No. 15 TCU in Arlington, Texas this Saturday.
