May not like him, but Tebow's stats at Florida were otherworldly.

Nobody ran in 2-yard TDs like Tebow, and I mean nobody.

I've grown to actually like Tebow over the years.
I hated him when he was at Florida.

DMAC is still the only player that friends who are fans of other teams feared.

To this day - they will still talk about DMAC with admiration and recount various stories of times he destroyed their defense.

Disagree with Tebow but quite an honor

Good for Dmac. He was incredible. He was also surrounded by incredible talent.

Stuff like this article always makes me wonder how much better it could have been in 2006 and 2007 without all the drama and politics.

I'm still upset DMac couldn't win the Hypesman Trophy one year.
I can understand Tebow, because he at least had big stats, but the Troy Smith one was a joke.
I'll never follow the Hypesman Trophy.

It's always been as much about teams as individuals anyway. It's supposed to be the 'most outstanding player' in the country. Doesn't say anything about how good your team is. Voters put their own criteria in there. This is why Marshall Faulk had no real chance of winning in 1991, even though he was far and away the best player in the country. He played for San Diego State.

And... it’s a frigging shame he couldn’t have started out with a great or good NFL team that would fully utilize his skills and that had a great offensive line rather than the nfl wannabe team (Oakland) that he wound up with....

In 2007, I hated how they always talked about Tebow's "numbers." Yeah, he scored a lot of touchdowns running it in from the 1, 2, 3 yard line. But, they were right. Even Mark May. Even if I don't like it, there was no denying it. Just too many stats, no matter how lackluster they were.

The biggest problem, we can't go back in time in looking at DMAC's body of work. If so, yeah, we'd take Troy's trophy and give it to DMAC. Troy Smith was a good all-conference quarterback, that's it. He just happened to be on the number 1 team.

I doubt this is the case, but Spurrier may have always voted for only QBs, since he was a QB and Heisman Winner himself.
If so, at least he would be consistent in his approach.

But he probably didn't do that and is truly an arrogant jerk. He of all people should vote for DMac after watching that 321 yard performance against his team in 2007.

I didn't hate him as much as I hated hearing about him.

Hearing about him was definitely the worst but he was also extremely attention seeking with his God stuff and rah-rah speeches and acting like he walked on water. I respect and have no problem with his faith but while in college it definitely served for his own attention (whether intentional or not by him).

To his credit, he has generally seemed to live up to it and seems like he is probably pretty authentic and a good person. I don't hate him now, but will forever be a TebowHater for the theft of McFadden's Heisman (yes, Troy Smith was even worse but you "couldn't win as a sophomore" before Tebow..)

This was one of my favorites:

Quote
Tebow to skip senior year, ascend directly into heaven

MIAMI (SP) -- Shortly after leading the Florida Gators to a national
championship with a 24-14 win over Oklahoma, junior quarterback Tim
Tebow announced that he would skip his senior season and ascend
directly into heaven.

Tebow entered the press room to wild applause. A reporter for a 24-
hour cable sports network burst into tears when the 2007 Heisman
winner entered the room. Another threw a pair of boxer shorts on the
podium. Tebow smiled at the gesture and several sports reporters
fainted.

"Sorry I'm late," Tebow began. "There was a six-year-old boy with
cancer in row 54 and I had to make my way through the crowd to heal
him."

"I want to start by saying that playing quarterback for the University
of Florida, winning two national championships, has been a great
honor. There has been some speculation about my future and I want to
clear that up right now," he continued.

"Don't go, Tim!" a reporter shouted from the back of the room.
"After much consideration, I have decided to skip my senior season at
the University of Florida and ascend directly into Heaven," Tebow
announced. Upon making the announcement, Tebow was bathed in a
blinding white light and vanished.

In response to the news, ESPN announced they will have a month-long
tribute to Tebow. ESPN2 will now be known as ESPN-TEBOW and will
feature Tebow highlights (including home videos of Tebow's childhood),
re-airings of past interviews, Tebow-centric analysis by ESPN air
personalities, a Tebow quiz show and a reality show to find the "most
Tebow-like" person in America.

"He wasn't just the greatest player in college football history," said
a college football writer at the press conference, tears streaming
down his face. "He might have been the greatest person to ever walk on
earth."

Well let's see how good that really is when you compare.

Lamar Jackson

no comparison, Jackson was a lot better

Johnny Manziel

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/johnny-manziel-1.html

Again no comparison, Manziel was a lot better.

So there are two since 2000 that Tebow does not compare with.

then you throw in a dew QB's like Aaron Rodgers, Sam Bradford. I don't think Tebow was in top three. Also got to put Adrian Peterson in there, so not sure DMac was either.  Cam Newton played one year so he's out.  Bogus list.

We’re not talking about Troy Smith. We’re talking about the supposed rule that an underclassmen can’t win, went away with Tebow. The “sophomore rule” applied for the inner-city black kid, but didn’t apply for the All-American, Christian white boy. Adrian Peterson didn’t win it his freshman year, due to the supposed freshman rule...but oddly that rule didn’t apply for Johnny Football.

Just an interesting commentary...

I would argue that Dmac had a better college career than AP.

I would argue that Tebow had a greater impact on his team than certainly the other QBs you listed.

I would argue that Cam Newton had a bigger impact than Tebow-- and may be the greatest college football player I've ever seen.

So ya... it's a good list.

This thread is hilarious.

McFadden should've won it over Troy Smith, no question about it.

Over Tebow? Probably not.

Part of why I'm bitter is because all the experts said you can't give a Heisman Trophy to a sophomore.  So they gave it to Troy Smith that year, because Ohio State.

The next year, Tebow did admittedly have a hell of a season, and suddenly it becomes okay to give a Heisman Trophy to a sophomore.
